LIVE (I THINK) FIGHTS TOMORROW FREE ON WWW.DONKINGTV.COM AT 9 PM ET.

Don King is putting on a free card tomorrow from Japan. Might not be live considering the time but it's still something that wouldn't have been easily found without this.

Jose Alfaro is making the first defense of the now somewhat meaningless WBA lightweight title against Yusuke Kobori. Also undefeated Paulus Moses gets a showcase fight against 7-10-2 Yauhen Kruhlik.

Unfortunately I'm gonna be at fucking work tomorrow and won't be able to watch it.

Margarito: "I Will Break Cotto and Knock Him Out"

Margarito returns to Las Vegas for the first time in more than two years where he knocked out Manuel Gomez in the first round in defense of his WBO welterweight belt during his first title reign.

“I have wanted this fight against Cotto for so long," said Margarito. "I am going to make that ring a pressure cooker for him. I will be in one gear for our fight – forward. I will wear him down, break him down and knock him out. July 26 can’t come fast enough for me.”

Ponce De Leon vs. Juan Manuel Lopez Heats Up

By Mark Vester

WBO super bantamweight champion Daniel Ponce De Leon has promised to put a hurt on undefeated Juan Manuel Lopez when the two fighters clash on the June 7 undercard to Kelly Pavlik-Gary Lockett at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. One man will probably fall on his back. The two fighters have a combined 49 knockouts in 55 fights.

Ponce De Leon is upset that Lopez told reporters that he will win the fight by knockout before the start of the ninth-round.

"He said that? I am going to knock him out. If he tries to run, I will go after him all over thr ing to get to him," Ponce De Leon told El Nuevo Dia. "I am prepared to win at any cost. I'm not worried. I've fought with a lot of strong punchers and I've broken them down. And what Juan brings to the table, I will break him down. I am sparring right now with fighters bigger than myself. I am ready to take his shots. I'm not worried about his left-hand style because I've fought a lot of left-handers and performed very well.

The Puerto Rican media is pumping up Lopez, but Ponce De Leon's manager, Joe Hernandez, says the unbeaten fighters in no superstar.

"Juan Manuel Lopez is not Wilfredo Gomez or Felix Trinidad or Miguel Cotto. We don't fear his punches. Juan Manuel is an average fighter who is fighting way too early for the title. When he attackes first he does well, but when he is under attack, he goes backwards," Hernandez said. "The plan is to destroy the enemy and Juan will not make it to the final bell

Gamboa-Valero this year?
Gamboa to return in June!

After his impressive win over Darling Jimenez on Saturday night in Primm, Nevada, unbeaten WBA #3 Yuriorkis Gamboa (10-0, 8 KOs) is eyeing a June 27th showdown with the #2 rated Jose Cheo Rojas that would take place in Miami and be televised on ESPN2. Should Gamboa get past Rojas, a mouth watering collision with WBA champion Edwin Valero could come in short order. In other Gamboa-related news, his manager Ahmet Öner has terminated Gamboa's trainer Osmiri Gamboa Fernandez, whom he said was too much of a "buddy type." Now training the Cuban Olympic gold medalist will be the highly respected Orlando Cuellar, best known for doing such great work with former world champion Glen Johnson.

Boxer Cho dies in Japan

Monday, May 19 2008

By Joe Koizumi

A Japan-based Chinese boxer named Cho He (5-6, 4 KOs), passed away on Sunday in Tokyo, Japan, because of a brain injury suffered in his previous bout fifteen days ago on May 3. Cho was stopped in the sixth and final session of a 130-pound fight in Tokyo and the unconscious boxer was carried away on a stretcher. He was immediately hospitalized to undergo an urgent operation and remove blood clots at the Jikei Medical Hospital. Cho, whose Japanese name was Mikio Takeuchi, was a third generation of his Chinese grandparents who had moved here by keeping their Chinese nationality. Cho floored Daichi Sakoda in the first round, but the tide turned with Sakoda retaliating with busy combinations. In the fatal round, at 2:53 with only seven seconds remaining, it was waved off as Cho looked temporarily helpless with the rubbery legs. It never looked a late stoppage as some people even castigated the referee’s halt as premature and said that the loser Cho could have lasted seven more seconds. On the eve of a history-making night of Yusuke Kobori’s WBA lightweight coronation on the national “Boxing Day,” this ring tragedy happened with all our boxing people mourning for his soul to rest in peace.

Yuriorkis Gamboa Hires Orlando Cuellar as Trainer

“Rising Star” Yuriorkis Gamboa was shining bright when he beat Darling Jimenez from New York this Saturday in Primm, Nevada by unanimous decision after a ten-round-war. Though criticized for keeping his hands down giving Jimenez the chance to drop the Cuban in the fourth most spectators were pleased by Gamboa’s exceptional speed, great ring movement and absolute dominance over a very experienced opponent.

“Whoever criticizes Gamboa now should not forget that it was only his 10th pro-fight”, states promoter Ahmet Öner, “And Jimenez is a very tough, experienced and dangerous contender. Of course, Gamboa still got a lot to learn. But everyone who saw how he demolished Jimenez’ face will have to agree that after all he remains an exceptional talent and lots of fun to watch.”

Still at Saturday’s HBO Boxing After Dark show from Terrible’s Primm Valley Casino Resort the promoter saw some things he didn’t like. And he responded to this by dismissing Gamboa’s trainer Osmiri Fernandez right after the fight in the dressing room.

“I felt this was necessary”, explains Öner, “mainly because Gamboa didn’t seem to respect Fernandez. He was more like a ‘buddy type’. In addition to that Fernandez was an amateur coach who came from Cuba to work with Gamboa with barely any pro experience.”

In Orlando Cuellar, Öner already found a new trainer who seems to better fit his needs as he worked successfully with former world champion Glengoffe Johnson amongst others.

“Cuellar has proved already that he can make champions”, says Öner. “I believe he’s the right man to take Gamboa all the way to the top. Gamboa doesn’t need to learn anything about boxing. He just needs to adjust his game a little and I think Cuellar will help him doing so.”

The 2004 Olympic gold medallist will be back in action on June 27th when he is meant to fight Jose “Cheo” Rojas. By beating WBA #2 ranked Rojas “El Ciclon de Guantanmo” (currently ranked on #3) could get very close to become world champion in only his second year as a professional.
