Berto vs. Zaveck September 3rd on HBO
By Dan Ambrose: Former WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto (27-1, 21 KO’s) could be facing IBF welterweight champion Jan Zaveck (31-1, 18 Ko’s) on HBO on September 3rd, according to boxing news from Dan Rafael. HBO reportedly has set that date aside and is holding it for Berto in a fight against Zaveck.
There still isn’t any venue for the fight, but it would likely have to take place in the U.S where Berto has a small following among fans. Berto lost his World Boxing Council title in his last fight in an exciting 12 round decision to Victor Ortiz last April.
Normally fighters have to wait a while before they get a title shot after losing their belt, but this would be a soft landing for Berto if he can quickly fight for strap against Zaveck, who is seen by many boxing fans as a weak paper champion. However, Berto looked to have stamina problems in his loss to Ortiz, so Zaveck would have a good chance of beating Berto if he can fight hard for 12 rounds.
Zaveck, 35, has held the IBF title since beating Isaac Hlatshwayo in 2009. Zaveck has defended the belt three times against little known opposition and has won two of his three title defenses by knockout. The issues that boxing fans hav with Zaveck is that he’s not fought any real recognizable opponents since he captured the IBF title and thus he’s been almost totally forgotten.
Berto was in the same boat at Zaveck in terms of facing obscure opposition during his time as the WBC champion. Berto faced largely smaller light welterweights and little known welterweights since capturing his belt in 2008. When Berto finally did step it up and face a quality welterweight in Ortiz, Berto was beaten. As such, a fight between Berto and Zaveck matches two guys that have been carefully matched. Hopefully the winner of this fight won’t continue to face obscure guys and slip off the radar again.

Wladimir interested in fighting Arreola in New York
By Eric Thomas: For his next fight, IBF/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko says he’d really like to fight in New York and take on Chis Arreola. Wladimir sees Arreola as a good opponent to take on in front of the American fans and it would be one of Wladimir’s rare fights in the U.S. He’s not interested, however, in fighting David Haye again because he feels that Haye can’t fight at the heavyweight level.
Speaking with sportsillustrated.cnn.com, Wladimir said “Let’s do it. I checked with Emmanuel, he thinks it’s perfect too. Arreola has more experience, he has lost some weight. I hope we can do it in New York. I want to fight in front of that audience. When I fought Ibragimov and [Calvin] Brock, a lot of people came. I hope they would come out again.”
Wladimir is also interested in fighting heavyweights Alexander Povetkin, Denis Boytsov, Derek Chisora, and Tyson Fury.
Arreola is ranked no. 5 by the IBF, and has put together a small string of wins since losing to Tomasz Adamek in 2010. Arreola has lost some weight and looked a little bit better than he did when he was stopped by WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko in the 10th round in 2010. But Arreola doesn’t look good enough for a lot of boxing fans to see him fight. But then again neither does Fury, Chisora, Povetkin or Boytsov. Arreola might possibly be the best of a bad bunch.
Compared to those fighters, Arreola arguably has the bigger power and a larger fan base but that’s not saying a whole lot. He’s incredibly slow and now that he’s lost weight, he’s not as big a puncher as he was when he was carrying around more weight. It would be an even worst mismatch than the Haye fight because Arreola wouldn’t have the wheels to run for his life the same way that Haye did in his loss to Wladimir.
Wladimir says he wants to fight before the end of the year. He’ll likely take on the best fighter of the bunch, which probably end up being Arreola. However, with his three titles, Wladimir is now going to be busy fighting mandatory challengers and that’s not exactly appealing. Preliminary discussions have taken place over a 2012 fight between Amir Khan, the WBA light-welterweight champion, and Floyd Mayweather Jnr, the unbeaten American legend.
Khan has repeatedly called out Mayweather as he prepares to step into the welterweight division after a July 23rd title defence against IBF king Zab Judah.
Mayweather, who faces Victor Ortiz for the WBC welterweight title in September, would be the toughest-possible introduction to the new division - Khan is unlikely to face Manny Pacquiao, who is also trained by Freddie Roach - but the Brit is up for the challenge, and so is Mayweather, according to Golden Boy Promotions supremo Richard Schaefer.
"We believe in Amir and believe he is ready. These are big plans but Team Khan are on board," he said. "I've had conversations with Mayweather and his adviser Al Haymon and they are definitely open to a fight with Amir Khan, absolutely."
Schaefer also revealed that Mayweather, whose fight against Ortiz will be his first since May 2010, is keen to be more active in the next couple of years - although a Pacquiao fight remains a distant possibility, no matter how much Mayweather claims he wants it. Pacquiao has started legal proceedings against Mayweather, and there is no sign of their blood-settling dispute being resolved.
"Floyd has indicated he would like to do the Pacquiao fight," said Schaefer. "He said to me he'd be open to fighting Pacquiao next if the testing issue can be sorted out. Amir would then fight in the autumn against Mayweather.
"I spent the last week with Mayweather and he said he wants to fight more than once per year. Whether he delivers on that promise, I don't know, but I really believe he does want to fight several times a year.
"He's mentioned to me the possibility of fighting in December again. Floyd has rediscovered his love for boxing and is ready to go. He's hungry again."

Booth: Wladimir is a completely different fighter than Nikolay Valuev
By Sean McDaniel: Trainer Adam Booth is only now understanding how different and how much better IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko is compared to former WBA heavyweight champion Nikolay Valuev, who Booth’s fighter David Haye beat two years ago by using a lot of movement to win a close 12 round decision.
Booth stuck with that plan for Haye’s fight with Klitschko last weekend and it utterly failed with Wladimir easily negating Haye’s strategy of movement by quickly cutting off the ring and forcing him to fight.
Booth said this about Wladimir at Sky Sports News: “Wladimir boxed out of his skin.He couldn’t have fought any better…We know how quick he [Wladimir] was, but it was how quick he moved backwards and then came forwards and was assertive, which was kind of against his nature up until this point. Haye: I was all talk
David Haye conceded he had failed to back up his big pre-fight boasts after surrendering his WBA heavyweight title to Wladimir Klitschko in Hamburg on Saturday.
Klitschko dominated the 12 rounds to earn a unanimous decision and add Haye's belt to the IBF and WBO straps he already owned.
Haye was hampered by a broken little toe suffered in training three weeks before the fight but said the physical pain was small in comparison to the mental side of defeat.
"It is my ego and pride that is hurting more than anything else," Haye said when he dropped into the Sky Sports News HD studio on Monday.
"You can live with the physical pain but it is the emotional pain that cuts deepest.
"You know what I'm like before the fight, I give it all the big mouth.
"I talk the talk and normally I walk the walk. On Saturday night I didn't walk the walk and I'm gutted about that.
"I feel like I've let a lot of people down. I feel like I've let myself, family, everybody down."

They could put it on Jupiter or Pluto and Ward would still win it. On October 29th, Froch is going to get royally whipped and it doesn’t matter where the fight ends up, Froch is going to lose.
They could even put the fight in good old Nottingham, the home of Froch, and he’d still get humiliated in David Haye fashion. We’re talking different levels here. Froch is good fighter that struggles against quality opposition. We saw that when Froch was put in with the talented Andre Dirrell, and we saw it happen again when Froch got out-classed by Mikkel Kessler last year. So, the Froch vs. Ward fight is likely to take place in Atlantic City, New Jersey. But it won’t matte. Froch is too slow, too robotic and too elementary with his defense to beat a talented fighter like Ward.
You got to have the ability to block punches to beat a great fighter like Ward, and Froch doesn’t have that. He blocks punches with his chin rather than his gloves or his arms. That’s not going to get the job done against a guy like Ward. He’s going to be bouncing shots off Froch’s lantern jaw all night long and it’s going to be sad to see another British fighter get exposed after the shame of Haye’s loss to Wladimir Klitschko.
