LOL. What the fuck is Mayweather doing fighting that washed up white boy for. I guess he needs a tune-up fight first, but he better fight Manny, or some other top fighter next, or he's a bitch boy in my book.

Kirkland to fight 35-year-old Ishida on 4/9

By Dan Ambrose: Unbeaten junior middleweight contender James Kirkland (27-0, 24 KO’s) will be taking a measured step up in class on April 9th when he faces 35-year-old Nobuhiro Ishida (22-6-1, 7 KO’s) in an 8-round bout on the undercard of Erik Morales – Marcos Maidana at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

This is a slight step up in class for Kirkland, because Ishida is ranked #3 by the WBA, but sadly is coming off a 12 round decision loss to Rigberto Alvarez in October 2010. WBA sometimes ranks fighters highly that haven’t proven themselves in the past against other top tier fighters.

The Alvarez seems to be the only recognizable name on Ishida’s 11-year career record. He did hold the WBA light middleweight interim title briefly after beating Marco Antonio Avendano in 2009. However, Ishida didn’t look at all good in the Alvarez bout.

Kirkland, 27, has fought twice since getting out of prison in 2010, beating Ahsandi Gibbs and Jhon Berrio by quick knockout. Kirkland looked sloppy in the Berrio fight and not particularly impressive compared to the other top contenders in the division.

DeGale/Groves -Ringside Interview

By Dennis McCarthy: During promotions for this fight, we will see James DeGale try his very best to unsettle George Groves, to take him out of his comfort zone and pressure Groves into fighting with his heart, not his head.

After watching the Ringside interview last week, and the way DeGale handled himself, if this carries on, I can see this having the exact opposite effect. James, while trying to maybe become the next Prince Naseem with his jibes and swagger, is making himself look an idiot, who has absolutely nothing of any relevance to say. His insults were that of a 14 year old schoolboy trying to look hard in front of his mates. DeGale will become frustrated that Groves is unaffected by the abuse, and it will get to DeGale as the fight draws closer.

On one occasion, DeGale said he would gladly put money on him winning the fight within the first four rounds, when challenged to put his money where his mouth is by Groves, his response was, “look at your tie you fool, sit down”. 1-0 to Groves there. Groves also showed that he is completely unfazed by DeGale’s insults, most probably due to the fact he has heard the same jibes over and over again down the line and has grown used to them, expects nothing else from DeGale. James is under the impression that the vast majority of support will be for him come 21st May, and at the moment, he is probably correct in thinking this, but should he carry on in this manner during the promotion campaign, making himself look an uneducated, silly fool at every opportunity, the neutrals will surely turn towards Groves come fight night.

James is the better fighter and should win the fight, make no mistake. He has improved in leaps and bounds since being beaten by Groves in a close decision a few years back as an amateur, whilst Groves has shown no signs of major progress, compared to his former sparring partner anyway. He didn’t look a world beater with his stoppage win against Commonwealth Gold champ Kevin Anderson, and his next fight against Daniel Adotey was just standard prep against a man who to be fair, wasn’t even in the same class, or classes directly below George.

I’m sure that DeGale will go on to win major honours down the line. I just hope he has people supporting him along the way.

It is, however, great to see two fighters, working towards their peak, fighting each other when they both have perfect records and near perfect knock out ratios. I hope the older, more experienced fighters at the top of the tree will take note and learn from this.

Don King should teach anger management to Golden Boys, Arum

Michael Marley

* Boxing Examiner

learly, we need some adult supervision in the boxing world.

Richard Schaefer, defending the honor of Rachel Marcial Donaire and Fil-Am and Filipina women everywhere, has lambasted prickly pear Bob Arum (again) as a "dinosaur" and a "low life."

(Rachel, a skilled taekwondo practitioner, would seem to be more than able to defend herself.)

Schaefer, the former Swiss banker and Golden Boy bossman, has called the 79 year old Arum and the similarly aged Don King relics in the past or, to be more specific, "B Rex and D Rex."

I'm nut sure which one is the brontosaurus, nor did I ever see King or Arum portrayed on "The Flinstones" as residents of Bedrock.

Schaefer took to his bully pulpit using Lem Satterfield of Boxingscene as his media megaphone.

Don't blame the messenger as virtually anything uttered by Golden Boys or Arum is newsworthy especially in light of how no one is doing anything to make the Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Manny Pacquiao super fight the public has demanded for over two years.

Schaefer took umbrage at Arum howling at the Bagiuo moon about how the flamboyantly dressed Rachel is "all tarted up."

She's young, sexy and in the public eye, Uncle Bob, must she dress like Sally Field as the Flying Nun? Who made you a female fashion arbiter in the first place?

Arum used a flimsy shield before ripping Rachel, saying that Nonito's wife has belittled the clothing style of Jinkee Pacquiao.

Jinkee, who runs several business in General Santos City, is a modern woman much like Rachel is.

Mrs. Pacman doesn't need either her hubby or volunteer Arum to fight her battles, if any.

If sexist remarks are wrong, and they are, then so are the continuing "dinosaur" and "old fogey" shots fired at King and Arum.

Ageism is just bad as racism, sexism and all the other "isms."

Ditto for Oscar De La Hoya once blasting Arum, his longtime promoter, as "the big Jew from Harvard."

That's anti-Semitic to the max, I'd say. What would have happened if Arum had impugned Oscar's Mexican heritage?

"Big Jew from Harvard" is as dumb if not as mean as Arum's continual jabs at what he says is Oscar's "rare lack of intelligence."

I don't think De La Hoya ever held himself out as any kind of Everlast Einstein or any other type of genius.

The upshot of all this verbal diarrhea is that it is King who has carefully refrained from getting into these schoolyard spitball fights even when Schaefer knocked him for saying he can relate to Mayweather because they both speak "ghettoese."

King showers all, friend and foe alike, with love rather than resentment.

Time for some anger management classes in boxing, I say.

Oscar, Robert and Richard, say hello to your new teacher.

Come on guys, let's hear it.

"Good morning, Mr. King."

Only in America, indeed.

jesus, these writers are hard to impress. Kirkland just gets out of prison and did 2 years there, with no boxing gym or training, takes two quick fights in 13 days and he's being criticized for looking sloppy? lmao. And this upcoming fight is not a slight step up it's a big step up compared to the two cab drivers he fought. And this will be his third fight in a month's time.

Not sure why people expected instant perfection, it's a process that's going to take time. He has a new trainer that's working on a lot of things and he's not even in his prime weight of 154 pounds yet, his two fights so far have been at 163 pounds, so he's still trying to lose the extra weight he gained (which he reportedly got up to 190-200 pounds in prison at one point). Like kirkland said, by the end of the year he thinks he'll be ready for a title shot, but until then it's going to take a number of more fights and lots of improvement to get there. Dude has barely shaken the ring rust.

Actually I don't give a fuck what you have to say over the internet. Now in real life I would slap the piss out of you for even calling me a boy. I write the same way I talk in real life. My question to you is why are you so worried about what I type anyway? Did me calling a washed up white boy a washed up white boy hurt your feelings? Are you one of them white boys that's mad at the world because you can't say nigga to a black person without getting your ass kick? I just wondering why you made it a point to question me about what I said?

Cotto and the junior middleweight division

By Luis Berrios: Miguel Cotto the proud fighter from Puerto Rico, now a junior middleweight, people are asking “why Cotto hasn’t fight any of the best from the middleweight division?” the reason is simple, he is adapting to this weight class. Cotto moved last year to the junior middleweight division, after the Manny Pacquiao fight. What Miguel is trying to do is fight his way back to the top to get another fight against Pacquiao.

The first fight for Miguel at 154 pounder was against Yuri Foreman, everyone is saying that he was a paper champ because his recent lost against Pawel Wolak, I think that fight happened too soon for Yuri, he needed a warm up fight to test his new knee and get back his confidence. Miguel look good against Foreman because he want back to what made him champion, his boxing skills, he moved well in the ring and was keeping is arms up.

One of Cotto’s mistakes against Antonio Margarito and Pacquiao was his poor defense; he always lowers his arms to throw a punch and that’s when he was tagged by a counter punch. Steward is doing a great job improving Cotto’s defense. I agree on the decision to fight Ricardo Mayorga, a guy with a name and little left on his tank, this was a warm up fight for Miguel, he needed this fight to test his new shoulder and the result was good. I wanted to see more action on the fight but I was happy with Cotto’s performance, he was calm, dancing on the ring, throwing nice combinations, getting back to his original workaround to destroy the opponent, he didn’t need to rush his work, he needed more than just a simple KO, he needed to prove his workout with Steward is working, his stamina is improving and he hasn’t lost his boxing abilities.

To be honest I don’t see Cotto fighting any of the top middleweights top contenders because he only has 3 fight lefts. His rematch against Antonio Margarito, it will be at 154lbs. I don’t know if the tittle will be on the line. This will happened because Cotto needs to prove that he is back and his lost against Margarito didn’t affect him. After this fight he maybe go back to welterweight (147lbs) for a warm up fight against any of the top contenders, like Andre Berto, to seek a fight against Manny Pacquiao at welterweight. There is no secret that Emmanuel Steward wants Cotto to fight Paquiao at welterweight.

someone needs to stop Roy Jones before he gets killed. He's going to Moscow to fight a top ranked Russian cruiserweight.

Roy Jones-Lebedev Goes To Dynamo Arena in Krylatskoe

By Alexey Sukachev

A fight between Roy Jones Jr. (54-7, 40 KOs), 42, a former world champion in four weight divisions, and Denis Lebedev (21-1, 16 KOs), 31, one of the best active Russian fighters regardless any weight class, was discussed by Lebedev's side via a specifically designated press release. The event will be labeled the “Battle of Two Empires”, will be held on May 22 at Dynamo Arena in Krylatskoe, western Moscow.

The entire event will become one of the soundest fight cards in the history of Russian prizefighting and will be promoted by 2006 Russian promoter of the year Vladimir Hryunov, who also manages Lebedev, Alexander Povetkin and Alexander Bakhtin. Hryunov was also the man, who put up the first ever championship fight on Russian soil with a Russian boxer (Oleg Maskaev).

Roy Jones Jr., a 1988 Seoul silver medalist, is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished pugilists in the history of boxing, although his better days are obviously far behind him. Jones is “The Ring” 1994 Fighter of the year. He was IBF middleweight champ (1993-1994); IBF super middleweight (1994-1996); two-time WBC (1996-1997 and 1997-2004) light heavyweight; WBA light heavyweight (1998-2004); IBF light heavyweight (1999-2003) and WBA heavyweight (2003) champion of the world. Jones also held IBO, WBF, IBA and NBA trinkets around his waist at different times in his illustrious career. The Pensacola native will undeniably be the biggest star to fight in Russia to date.

Denis Lebedev, a versatile southpaw boxer-puncher with a knockout power in both hands, who was earlier trained by top Soviet coaches Artiom Lavrov and Valery belov and is now guided by Hall-of-Famer Kostya Tszyu. Lebdev is a 2001/2004 Russian light heavyweight champion and 2009 Russian Fighter of the years (by the Professional Boxing Federation of Russia). He is also ranked as the WBO #1 cruiserweight in the world, following his much disputed split decision loss to Marco Huck in December 2010. Lebedev represents “Vityaz” sport club and is supported by “Nasledie” foundation.

“I’m sure he beat Huck in Germany but was robbed there”, says John Wirt, the head of Roy Jones’ Square Ring Promotions, in the press release. “He is a legitimate cruiserweight world champion and one of the most dangerous fighters in his weight class”.

He was further quoted saying, “We had multiple choices from around the world; we had an offer from Canada; there were plans to fight in the United States, but this opportunity is unique. How many fights of such significance have ever been in Russia before? This is an intriguing moment which has immediately popped up. We have no reasons for worry. There will be a fair referee and competent judges. We are going there for a win”!

The presser will be held on April 7. The exact time and place of the press-conference will be announced later.

If he was broke I'd halfway understand it, but he's not he's well off. It's purely for the love of the game I guess and can't leave the sport.

I wish he would just fight jeff lacy's and omar sheika's for the remainder of his career. He still looks good against other shot fighters. Against big guys like Lebedev though? smh. He's going to end up dead or punch drunk to hell.
