Guzman waiting for new date

Thursday, April 24 2008

WBO junior lightweight champion Joan Guzman (28-0, 17 KOs) fully intends to travel to Scotland to defend his title against interim champion Alex Arthur (26-1, 19 KOs). The fight, which is currently scheduled for May 3 in Edinburgh, Scotland, however, will likely be rescheduled because Guzman is having trouble securing a visa that will allow him to travel to Scotland. "Guzman is not giving up his belt," said Jose Nunez, Guzman's long time manager. "He's worked extremely hard and gone through tremendous sacrifices to become a world champion. He's simply not going to give up his belt. Guzman will go to Scotland and he will successfully defend his title. The date will most likely be pushed back a bit.....rest assured that team Guzman will have all the appropriate paperwork for this fight. We know what has to be done and we understand the time frame that is needed to accomplish this." Sean Gibbons, matchmaker for Guzman's promoter Sycuan Ringside Promotions stated "We are waiting for Frank Warren of Sports Network to give us the new, rescheduled date." Frank Warren won the rights to this championship fight in a WBO purse bid.-Fight News

Tye fields doesn't impress me. Monte Barrett especially doesn't impress me. No heavyweights impress me.

The only match in the heavy division worth seeing is klitch v klitch.

Valuev is a side show. Peter is the only one with potential, but he disappointed recently.

Tye Fields is the most feared man in boxing. The Heavyweight division sucks because they fear Tye fields. Both Klitschko's would get murdered by Tye:

Not only that, he would have whooped Ali in his prime. Easy. Round one. Knockout by the wind of Tye's gloves:

Wladimir Klitschko vs. David Haye in London?

By Mark Vester

According to several reports and confirmed by both fighters, IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko and WBC/WBA/WBO cruiserweight champ David Haye went to dinner on Thursday night to discuss a possible future fight in London.

Haye is planning to vacate his titles in the next two months to begin his campaign as a heavyweight. Klitschko told BBC Sport that he is interested in a bout with Haye, but it's not easy to move up from cruiserweight to heavyweight.

"He is looking forward to switching to heavyweight, but it's not an easy step. There are exceptions like (Evander) Holyfield, who was a very successful heavyweight, so we'll see what David Haye is going to do," Klitschko said.

Klitschko said if the fight ever happens, he would like to hold it in London.

"I'm looking forward to fighting in London again, because London, like Great Britain in general, has such a great boxing community, it's amazing."

Klitschko defends his title against WBO mandatory Tony Thompson on July 12 at the Color Line Arena in Hamburg, Germany.

Felix Trinidad: "Bernard Hopkins is a Chicken"

By Mark Vester

Felix "Tito" Trinidad took a shot at Bernard Hopkins, who recently turned down a potential rematch. Speaking with Primera Hora, Trinidad said he is not going to make a rush decision on his next opponent.

Following Hopkins' decision loss to Joe Calzaghe, last week in Las Vegas, Trinidad's promoter Don King contacted Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, to discuss a rematch between the two fighters. Hopkins, who stopped Trinidad in 2001 to unify the middleweight division, was not interested in facing him again.

Trinidad says that Jermain Taylor and Kelly Pavlik are the two names that continue to come up as possible future opponents. King tried to match Trinidad and Pavlik earlier this year, but the issue of weight came into play. Trinidad is fighting at light heavyweight and unwilling to move down to the middleweight limit of 160, where Pavlik holds the WBO and WBC titles. King recently presented Trinidad with a proposal for a bout with Taylor, and Nicolas Medina (Trinidad's attorney) is set to discuss a possible deal (to fight Taylor) with King in the next few days.

"I feel well and I'm taking a deserved rest. I don't know yet what I'm going to do. I am not in a hurry. The names of Kelly Pavlik and Jermain Taylor have been mentioned," Trinidad said. "Bernard Hopkins has already said that he does not want to fight me again. He is a chicken and lost a good opportunity to make money."

Miguel Cotto Says Bring On Oscar De La Hoya

By Mark Vester

WBA welterweight champion Miguel Cotto welcomes a December bout with Oscar De La Hoya. Several days ago, De La Hoya said he was very interested in making the last fight of his career against Cotto. De La Hoya must first get past Steve Forbes on May 3 and then Floyd Mayweather Jr. in September. Cotto has a tough task ahead with Antonio Margarito on July 26.

"If I beat Mayweather, who is the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, my following fight has to be with one of the best and it's no secret that Miguel Cotto is one of the best in the world," De La Hoya said. "He has a difficult fight with Antonio Margarito and although any thing can happen, we all know that Miguel Cotto is going to win."

Cotto told Primera Hora that if De La Hoya is serious, he needs to contact promoter Bob Arum to get the wheels turning.

"If Oscar De La Hoya wants to fight me, all he has to do is contact my promoter and my team. We are here and prepare ourselves hard to face the best," Cotto said. "We always emphasize our interest in fighting the big names of the welterweight division. Right now we are focused on our battle with Margarito, but we are sure that we will leave victorious."

Gritty Puerto Rican Welterweight Out To Silence All Skeptics

25.04.08 - By Vivek Wallace: The welterweight division has been the sports proverbial 'loaded-deck' for quite some time. Generally when this weight division comes up, the names Mayweather, Cotto, and Margarito fill the conversation to a point where there's very little room to discuss any others. As great as those 3 aformentioned fighters are, last November, one relatively unknown commodity set out to change that, and by the end of the night it was obvious that this diamond-in-the-rough was poised with a 'shine' being polished as we speak. That commodity is none other than the man simply known as "El Rayo", Mr. Jesse Feliciano, whose recent gritty performance against a top tier welterweight earned him ring credibility in it's bravest form, leaving many to openly ponder the question of exactly when would that 'guy' who gave Kermit Cintron absolute hell be back in the ring?

After that defining moment, those who didn't know his name not only began to respect it, but also request it, and with no further ado, tonight "El Rayo" (15-6-3, 9KO's) strikes again as he faces Andrey Tsurkan (25-3-1, 16KO's) on ESPN's Friday night fights.. For those familiar with Ukranian Andrey Tsurkan (pronounced SUR-can), it doesn't take much to know that this fight will be bombs away from the beginning to the end. While Tsurkan comes with heavy artillery of his own to detonate, Feliciano has proven time and time again that in his world, there are no 'lay-downs'. Every competition is a war and every second is a battle.

Some may glance at the 6 losses on his record and expect a subpar fighter, but his past in the ring is a perfect example of why fans should INspect rather than EXpect. A perfect case for this statement is made when you analyze the history of top welterweights Miguel Cotto, Antonio Margarito, and linear champ Floyd Mayweather Jr., compared to Jesse Feliciano, throughout their first 24 professional fights. While Cotto, and Mayweather were both brought along a bit more gradual under the tutelage of Top Rank's Bob Arum, Feliciano was clearly baptized by fire, as 13 of his first 24 opponents had one loss or less, compared to Margarito (11), Cotto (8) and Mayweather (5). Some might argue the level of competition between the fighters but better logic quickly responds when you consider that of the many great fighters in the sport, few in history have ever traveled such a treacherous path.

One might question what gives a fighter the you-know-whats to take such a path, but after spending 20 minutes interviewing Feliciano it became very evident that this is a young man whose present is defined by his past, yet in the end his future will be defined by his heart. Never known as one to display false bravado, there was no audible crack in his voice when asked who would he like to face next in the ring? His response was "after a hard fought victory against Tsurkan, Julio Ceasar Chavez Jr., and/or a rematch with either Cintron or Alfonso Gomez" would whet his appetite. As the conversation shifted to his log-jammed weight division, he spoke kindly of Floyd Mayweather Jr., remembering sparring sessions they had leading up to the Jose Castillo fights. When asked what was his take on the criticism Floyd Mayweather Jr. has received lately for appearing disinterested in defending his straps, he responded by saying "Floyd's a business man....He's put in the work through years of hardcore dedication and earned the right to receive all that has come to him". Although he stopped short of saying that Mayweather should earn a free pass to lollygag, he did seem very appreciative of all he learned in his encounters with the 'Prettyboy'.

As we wrapped up the interview, Feliciano, a true fight fan's man, emphatically stated that "[he] wants all of his fans to know that any fight he's in will be nothing less than excitement from the beginning to the end". Keeping that in mind, a famous man once said "the journey of a thousand miles starts with the first step", and for Feliciano, the first step has been taken, the next is a motion in progress. Tune in tonight at 930pm est as the mission resumes. For those who've never witnessed a Feliciano fight, don't ask, 'Just-See' Feliciano at work.

Steve Cunningham named best boxer by Ring Magazine

Philadelphia (April 23, 2008)—for the second consecutive year, Ring Magazine has named Steve “USS” Cunningham the best boxer in the cruiserweight division. It was a banner 2007 for Cunningham has he won and then defended the IBF Cruiserweight championship. When told of the honor, Cunningham was more then happy of the accomplishment..

“This means a lot to me. It means the hard work I have put in to reach a certain level has continued and people still recognize that. I only plan to bring my skills up to a higher level and continue to reign as champion.”

“The Ring Magazine means a lot and with David Haye moving to heavyweight, I know one of the criteria’s of crowning a new champion is that the top-two contenders fighting each other. As I look at the rankings, I am number-one and Jean-Marc Mormeck is two. We are both promoted by Don King so I hope that a fight with us can be made so I can win that belt.”

Cunningham, 21-1 with eleven knockouts will also be appearing on ESPN radio, 950-am in Philadelphia on the Mike Missinelli show this Friday in the 3 o’clock hour.

Klitschko: Haye is nuts!

Friday, April 25 2008

World heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko says undisputed cruiserweight champion David Haye ‘is nuts’ for wanting to fight him. The IBF/WBO/IBO heavyweight titleholder thinks that the Briton first needs to prove himself as a genuine heavyweight contender. Speaking to Setanta Sports News, Klitschko said, "I met this guy yesterday. I’d never heard of him before but he was so loud that I could have heard his voice overseas. He’s a nice guy but he’s so excited about his career and moving up to the heavyweight division and winning all the titles. He’s definitely got a good punch and is a great boxer but he’s just so loud it’s unbelievable. The one thing that he does have already, though, is that he’s very self-confident. He has to have a couple of good fights at heavyweight and, after that, who knows? If he continues to do well then maybe we will fight each other. Maybe Great Britain is going to have the next undisputed heavyweight champion of the world – but only after I retire.”
