Mayweather: If Pacquiao Won't Get Drug Tested, No Fight!

By Mark Vester

Following his dominating twelve round decision over Shane Mosley at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Floyd Mayweather Jr. stayed firm on his position when it came to the subject of a fight with Manny Pacquiao. Unless Pacquiao agrees to the random Olympic-style drug tests, Mayweather says the fight will not happen.

The two sides were in talks earlier in the year. The fight fell apart because Pacquiao and Mayweather could not agree on the cut-off date for the random drug tests. Pacquiao wanted the tests to stop 24-days prior to the fight and Mayweather them to continue until 14-days prior to the fight. Recently Pacquiao's trainer Freddie Roach told BoxingScene.com that he was willing to compromise and meet Mayweather halfway, at 17-days. Mayweather is probably not going to agree to a cut-off date the second time around. He is going to push for the testing period to continue until the day of the fight.

"If Manny Pacquiao wants to fight, it's not hard to find me. We were going to make this fight happen a couple of months back. We couldn't make it happen, so we moved on," Mayweather said.

"All I want to do is be on an even playing field. If every athlete is clean, than take the test. I'm willing to take the test. Like I've said before, if Manny Pacquiao takes the blood and urine tests, we can make the fight happen for all the fans. [If he doesn't] then we don't got no fight.

De La Hoya: Mayweather Dictates The Terms, Not Pacquiao

By Mark Vester

If Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao decide to come together to negotiate a possible fight - Golden Boy President Oscar De La Hoya says it's Mayweather who will dictate the terms of the fight. The two boxers tried to make a deal earlier this year. They agreed to a 50-50 split on the money and the two appeared to be in agreement on just about everything else - except the terms for the random Olympic-style drug tests.

If they come together to negotiate for a second time, Mayweather will probably not agree to a 50-50 split on the money, and he won't agree to a cut-off deadline being in place for the random drug testing.

De Le Hoya told The Grand Rapids Press that Mayweather is now the "one to dictate terms" because of his record, the impressive win over Mosley and his cross-over superstar status.

"Mayweather is the king of the world now," De La Hoya said.

If Mayweather and Pacquiao meet in the ring, De La Hoya says the Filipino champion makes a lot of mistakes and Mayweather will make him pay for them.

"Being a student of the game, Pacquiao makes many mistakes," De La Hoya said. "And that will fall into Mayweather’s hands -- easy. It’ll be an entertaining fight, let me tell you, because there’s no stop in Pacquiao, there’s no quit in Pacquiao, that’s for sure."

Mayweather vs Sergio Martinez: Floyd Says 'It's Possible'

By Mark Vester

According to New York Newsday, Floyd Mayweather Jr. is open to a possible move to middleweight for a fight with WBC/WBO champion Sergio Martinez. Mayweather returned to action on Saturday night, dominating Shane Mosley over twelve rounds to win a unanimous decision.

After the fight was over, Mayweather was asked about some possible options - if a fight with Manny Pacquiao is not made. One reporter asked Mayweather about the possibility of moving up to 160-pounds to fight Martinez, who recently beat Kelly Pavlik for the titles. Mayweather surprised everyone by stating "it's possible."

Mayweather has won titles at 130, 135, 140, 147 and 154. Martinez is not a big middleweight, but he is a lot bigger and stronger than Mayweather. Mayweather could be bluffing to make a deal with Pacquiao. Several years ago, when Mayweather was fighting at 140-pounds, he was demanding a fight with Winky Wright, who at the time was the unified champion at 154. When it came time to make the deal, Mayweather's demands were so one-sided that he couldn't have been serious.

Pacquiao Will Agree To Drug Testing, With The 24-Day Cut

By Mark Vester

The biggest fight in boxing is now on the table. Manny Pacquiao dominated Joshua Clottey over twelve rounds at Cowboys Stadium in March. Floyd Mayweather Jr. dominated Shane Mosley on Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. There are two issues at hand, the issue of money and the random Olympic-style drug testing. The two sides sat down earlier this year and the two fighters could not agree on the cut-off date for the random drug testing. Following the win over Mosley, Mayweather said the Pacquiao could not be made without the random drug testing being involved.

"If Manny Pacquiao can take a blood and urine test then we have a fight,'' Mayweather said. "If not, no fight.''

According to several reports, Pacquiao watched the fight in the Philippines and afterwards spoke to Manilla radio station DZBB. Pacquiao said that he's willing to agree to the random blood testing, but only if the blood testing has a cut-off date of 24-days.

"For me, as long as the drug test is not done close to the match, I'll agree because if they'll get blood from me close to the match, it will be a disadvantage for me because I'm smaller and he's big,'' Pacquiao said.

The negotiations fell apart earlier this year when Mayweather refused to give Pacquiao a 24-day cut-off on the testing. Mayweather wanted a 14-day cut-off. The next time they negotiate, the deal could be harder to make. Mayweather, according to past interviews, will no longer consider a testing cut-off. He wants the testing to continue until the fight.

Shane Mosley: Retirement Not Out of The Question

By Mark Vester

WBA welterweight champion Shane Mosley, 38-years-old, is not sure of his next move. He was dominated by Floyd Mayweather Jr. on Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Mosley made a guarantee of $7 million for the fight with Mayweather. The pay-per-view revenue should give him a few more million. After the fight was over, Mosley was asked if he planned to fight again, or retire from the sport. Mosley would not give a straight answer on his future. He needs to review a tape of his performance before making a final decision.

“I will go back home and look at the tape and take it slow,” Mosley said. “When I get home, we’ll see what happens. I’m going to take some time and relax. I’ll think about it

Floyd Mayweather, Mosley, De La Hoya, Richardson Speak

FLOYD MAYWEATHER

"If Manny Pacquaio wants to fight, it is not hard to find me. We were going to make the fight a couple of months back but it didn't happen. I take my hat off to Mosley. He had problems in the past but he's a warrior. He took the blood and urine tests. I just want everyone to be on an even playing field. If every athlete is clean in the sport of boxing, take the test. If Manny Pacquaio takes the blood and urine tests, we can fight. If he doesn't, we won't make the fight.

"Here was another tremendous fight, another tremendous turn out.

"There was a point to prove; to see who was the best welterweight out there.

"Do I have to fight? No I don't have to fight, absolutely not. I truly believe the numbers we did are unbelievable.

"I always say, put them in front of me, I'll beat them.

"My dad, Roger and I have chemistry. The game plan was unbelievable. I looked back at my dad and he's telling me something. I looked back at Roger and he's telling me the same thing.

"I've got the will to win under the lights, but we all don't form under the lights the same.

"After a while I think Mosley went into survival mode. All he was trying to do was survive.

"Every fight is different, every fighter is different. Everyone was talking about how Mosley is stronger, how Mosley is faster. I rocked him more than he rocked me.

"At one point I thought he was going to cough it up, but he held on valiantly.

"I've been dominating fighters since the 90s, but I always say I'm closer to 40 than I am to 21. I'm not chasing fighters.

"Even with the second round, I knew I was the strongest guy form the beginning. Every fighter is totally different.

"Mentally in the fight I was talking to him. Telling him 'Your jab isn't faster than mine; if it is let me see.'

"Over the years, when I'm at home, I never study an opponent. They are going to be totally different in the ring.

"I believe that it's not bragging or boasting if you can back it up.

"The ultimate goal it to try to find a fighter than can beat me. There's a lot of young tough fighters out there that I take my hat off to, that I want to see do well.

"As of right now we just want to go home, reevaluate a few things, and see what we come up with. As of right now I just want to spend some time with my family.

"I'm here to just fight the best that's out there and be the best you can be.

"Zab Judah hit me with a better shot and DeMarcus 'Chop Chop' Corley hit me with a better shot.

"I think he tried, but it's just me being able to show my versatility to adapt and adjust. My game plan was going to work, break him down in every way.

"I think a lot of people are surprised. I just believe in myself, these types of things happen in big fights."

SUGAR SHANE MOSLEY

"I tried, it was a good fight, it was that close. He's a hell of a fighter. He's a great fighter. He did what he needed to do to win the fight.

"I tip my hat to him. I thank him for taking the challenge.

"He was hurt real bad when I hit him with that shot.

"I think after I caught him with that big right hand I opened up to much and played into his hands. I was too tight. When I hit him with the big right hand, I thought I was going to get the knockout.

"He started to avoid the punches. He did surprise me. Once I tried to get my timing back, I couldn't adjust and he did. I am happy I took the fight. He is a true champion. Now you will see him and Manny, if Manny takes the blood test.

"I will go back home and look at the tape, take it slow when I get home and we'll see what happens."

ROGER MAYWEATHER, Mayweather's Trainer

"Mosley has very fast hands, but he doesn't have a jab. He had tremendous hand speed, but it means nothing if you cant hit the target. You've got to be able to hit the target. Mosley is fast if he fights somebody slow, but it's different if it's somebody faster.

"He (Mayweather) boxed his ass off, and the fight wasn't even close."

NAAZIM RICHARDSON, Mosley's Trainer

"It was a great ride the outcome wasn't what we anticipated.

"I just got back from cursing out Shane. He was mad, saying that he didn't listen to his trainer and that he didn't follow his training. I had to tell him no one talks badly about my fighter, not even him.

"Floyd Mayweather is special. He's trained by special people.

"Nothing I saw surprised me.

"That fireball hit us, when that fireball hit us, our heads got kind of hot in there."

OSCAR DE LA HOYA, President of Golden Boy Promotions

"We have to really respect what we have just witnessed. The best boxer on the planet is Mayweather, in my mind, in Mosley's mind, in everybody's mind. He is the best. Tonight convinced me that he is the best

"He has the talent, he has the work ethic and people all over the world are become fans.

"He fought Shane Mosely, which was supposed to be the most dangerous fight of his career, and he showed us why he is the best.

"Mayweather can decide who he wants to fight now. He can decide who, when and where.

"Mayweather is on he is on a different level because he a student of the game he will dissect you outside the ring and finish you inside the ring

"Special boxers like Mayweather, we talk about them forever.

"He showed me true greatness because I felt that he was going to go down. That he was not going to be able handle Mosley's punch. It just shows you Mayweather is the real deal. I am a firm believer Mayweather is the best we have."

RICHARD SCHAEFER, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions

"Great crowd, it really is Las Vegas and many stars showed up. That is what Las Vegas brings, the glitz and the glamour.

"When the fight started people were yelling Mosley because there were a lot of haters, in the end, they were yelling 'Money' Mayweather.

"It was certainly a big night for Money Mayweather. Its going to be big, big pay-per-view numbers, that I can assure you."

Steve Cunningham Sees Big Things With Sauerland Move

By Ryan Burton

Former IBF cruiserweight champion Steve Cunninngham (22-2) tells BoxingScene.com that he officially signed with Germany based promotional company, Sauerland Event. Cunningham had been promoted by Don King and had this to say:

"I am very excited about the next chapter in my boxing career. I feel signing with Sauerland Event is a bold move but a smart move especially because of my weight class. Sauerland Event is a major player worldwide and I can see how well they support their fighters," Cunningham said.

Sauerland also promotes WBO cruiserweight champion Marco Huck who on Saturday scored a 9th round TKO of Brian Minto. Yoan Hernandez and Alexander Freckel are two more highly rated cruiserweights to round out Sauerland's deep stable in the division.

Fighting in Europe isn't a problem for Cunningham either. The Philadelphia native said - "I am happy to be a part of Team Sauerland and I am looking forward to spending more time in Germany. It is a beautiful country and with great boxing fans."

A rematch with Marco Huck could very well happen in the near future

Pacquiao Denies Bending To Mayweather on Testing Issue

By Ronnie Nathanielsz

Pound-for-pound king and “Fighter of the Decade” Manny Pacquiao has vehemently denied a report filed by a certain Timothy James on one of the Pacquiao websites claiming that he had agreed to Floyd Mayweather Jr’s demand for a 14 day cut-off for random blood tests for a fight to push through.

BoxingScene.com contacted Pacquiao’s adviser Michael Koncz about the report and asked him to double-check with Pacquiao.

Koncz got back to us a short while after he spoke to Pacquiao at his residence and said Pacquiao categorically stated "he never spoke to any reporter and never heard of the guy” who filed the story, even as he maintained that he had no official website although there are people who claim that they handle his "official site" [mpboxing.com].

Koncz quoted Pacquiao as saying he “never talked to anybody about boxing and his main concern is campaigning and winning the election on May 10. (Floyd) Mayweather is not even in our minds or in our thoughts."

However, Koncz quoted Pacquiao as saying "we’ll fight Mayweather or any other fighter anytime, any place under the rules and regulations of the Commission of the state where the fight takes place.”

The story alleged that the reporter spoke to Pacquiao in his home in General Santos City and that he had made an official statement for his website at 2:30 a.m. on May 3.
The statement quoted Pacquiao as saying “I am willing to help the sport for the future of the sport. I do not want to see anyone cheat or cheat this sport. For that reason I am willing to consider taking blood as close as 14 days prior to the fight, as long as, my opponent does the same, and it is not a lot of blood, just enough to test. I do not want anyone having an unfair advantage where someone may get hurt. I am willing to do my part to help this sport out.”

Manny Pacquiao was also alleged to have stated that he is willing to take blood immediately after the fight in his locker room "No problem." Manny just does not want to take blood right before the fight, as he feels that may hurt the fighter, if not physically, maybe mentally.

Wladimir Klitschko-David Haye Talks Go Well With HBO

By Ruslan Chikov

According to a report in Golzka, negotiations are going very well to make the heavyweight unification fight between champions Wladimir Klitschko and David Haye. Golzka reports that during the Mayweather-Mosley weekend in Las Vegas, Klitschko's adviser Shelly Finkel and Haye's co-promoter Golden Boy Promotions spoke with cable network HBO about the financial details of the fight and the scheduling. The talks were reported to have gone very well and the negotiations will continue to move forward.

Klitschko's trainer Emanuel Steward believes the fight may happen in September. The date will depend on the availability of a venue and the cable networks. The venue date has to work for three cable networks, located in the United States, Germany and England.

Mayweather – I can make $20 million to $30 million a fight without Pacquiao

Floyd Mayweather Jr. (41-0, 25 KO’s) apparently no longer needs to fight Manny Pacquiao to get huge money, as he made a guaranteed $22 million for his fight last Saturday night against World Boxing Association welterweight champion Shane Mosley. And Mayweather could end up making as much as $58 million if the fight ends up generating a minimum of 2 million pay-per-view buys. It’s not inconceivable that his fight with Mosley could end up being close to that number by the time the final PPV totals come in.

In an article by David Mayor of the Grand Rapids Press, Mayweather says “This is not bragging or boasting, but with or without Pacquiao, Floyd is going to be able to go out and make $20 million or $30 million a night. With or without him, I’m still able to do that.” Mayweather is right. He’s making huge cash no matter who he fights now and it seems a waste of time for him to be chasing after Pacquiao, when the Filipino fighter isn’t interested in taking the random Olympic style drug tests that Mayweather wants for all his fights.

Pacquiao has recently said that he would be willing to have his blood tested, but not close to the fight. This isn’t good enough for Mayweather, who wants Pacquiao to be tested all the way up to the fight. Mayweather appears to be in a power position with his win over Shane Mosley. That win has done a lot for Mayweather in terms of winning respect from boxing fans and writers. Pacquiao’s wins over Miguel Cotto and Joshua Clottey, both good victories, seem to have been put in the shadow by Mayweather’s shellacking of Mosley last Saturday night.

Mayweather attempted to put together a fight with Pacquiao a couple of months ago, but the fight fell through when Pacquiao didn’t want to have his blood tested within 24 days of the fight. At the time, Mayweather was very eager to make the fight happen. He seems less so now after getting the huge payday against Mosley.

At this point, Mayweather could take on WBC/WBO middleweight champion Sergio Martinez next if Pacquiao doesn’t change his mind about the random blood tests that Mayweather wants. A fight between Mayweather and Martinez would do really well, maybe as good as the Mayweather-Mosley fight did. Martinez has charisma and the Hollywood looks to generate a lot of interest. Martinez has a style of fighting that is similar to Mayweather’s with a lot of movement and speed.

Mayweather has this to say about Pacquiao: “I don’t think about no Pacquiao. I’m a boss, I only talk to bosses. He’s got to do numbers like I’m doing. What did him and Marquez do? 300,000, 400,000? Congratulations. Got to step his game up. Got to step his pay-per-view numbers up. I average 1.3 million, with ease. I’m Floyd Mayweather; they come to see me, regardless. I could fight three months, fight a fight a month and make $30 million, just like that. I could make $10 million a fight. This world is huge.”
Pacquiao may have missed the boat in getting a fight with Mayweather, because with Floyd’s win over Mosley, he’s not going to be willing to accept anything less than what he wants in negotiating a fight with Pacquiao. And that goes for pay cut and random blood tests.

The way that Mayweather looked against Mosley, it’s hard to see Pacquiao having much chance at beating Floyd. Mayweather appears to be on another level right now and unless he’s slows down, he’s probably going to stay at that level for while. Pacquiao should have taken the fight with Mayweather before he faced Mosley. Pacquiao also shouldn’t have fought Joshua Clottey. That fight did nothing for him, as it wasn’t the kind of opponent that would win him much respect in the boxing community. Pacquiao should have chosen Mosley, Andre Berto, Paul Williams or Sergio Martinez instead. They may not be Top Rank fighters like Clottey, but it’s a move that would have helped give him leverage for a fight with Mayweather. In hindsight, it was probably a bad move to take the Clottey fight instead of a more marketable fighter.
