Amir Khan Warns Nate Campbell, Casamayor

By Mark Vester

Undefeated lightweight Amir Khan, who over the weekend at the Bolton Arena stopped Martin Kristjansen in seven-rounds to capture the WBO's top ranking, has issued a warning to WBO/WBA/IBF champion Nate Campbell and WBO-interim champion Joel Casamayor.

Khan feels that the aging champions are no match for his youth, speed and high-pace style.

"You look at the two top guys now at lightweight - Campbell and Casamayor - and they're both getting on a bit," said Khan to The UK Mirror. "They're both 36 and with my pace and speed, I'd love to take them on because I know I'm good enough to beat them.

"The whole lightweight division is all over the place now. It's up for grabs since Diaz and Katsidis got beat. I look at it and I think I'm one of the up-and-coming lads who can take over.

After he wins a major title at 135, Khan plans to move up in weight to the junior welterweight division.

"I want to win the world title, defend it, mop up the division and then step up to light-welterweight. I don't think that's unrealistic and definitely this year, I'll be a world champion. There's no doubt. I'm still dedicated to achieving my goals."

Ted the Bull Interviews Alfonso Gomez

By Ted Sares: I had a chance to catch up with Alfonso Gomez who is getting ready for his big fight with Champion Miguel Cotto on April 12. Here is what he had to say.

The Bull: I have to tell you your match up with Cotto is one of those fights where it is hard to root against either fighter. Both of you guys are true gentlemen who always give 100%, are respectful, and don’t engage in trash talk or false hype. Why have you avoided that part of the game?

Gomez: It’s part of my culture. Mexicans are taught to be humble and respectful. I also had those kind of values instilled in me as I grew up. It’s just the way I am. Cotto and I look at this as a business and that’s how we approach it. There is no need for the insults.

Q) Where you born In Mexico?

Gomez: Yes, in Guadalajara, but we moved to Oakland, Calfornia and then to the city of Napa. I graduated from Napa High in 1998.

Q) Recognizing that you have fought very tough opposition almost from the outset of your professional career, you have been something of a career underdog. Do you agree with that perception?

Gomez: Yes. I did not have much of an amature caeer. I won the Blue and Gold Tournament and traveled back to Mexico where I held a national title. I went professional in 2001 and started fast. I fought tough guys like Ishe Smith from the very start and in many instances I was an underdog. But I have never backed down which is one of the reasons I called out heavily favored Peter Manfredo in the contenders. I wanted to fight the toughest guy there and that’s exactly what I did. It just seems to be my karma for people to doubt me.

Q) When you beat him, you were probably the only one who was not surprised.

Gomez: Could be.

Q) How would you characterize your self as a fighter? Your ring IQ?

Gomez: I believe I am a smart fighter who can counter well and use a body attack when appropriate. A lot of people think I am just another Mexican brawler, but that is just the opposite of what I bring to the table. I know my way around the ring and can adjust when necessary. If someone underestimates me, that will prove fatal. Bet on that.

Q) I need not remind you that Cotto has a brutal body attack in his tool chest. What are you going to do to deal with his incoming style?

Gomez: I too can work the body. However, to keep him at bay, the best thing to do is to snap off stiff jabs--and I can do that. Cotto’s chin is suspect and his style leaves him susceptible to body punches. Remember, others like Ricardo Torres and “Chop Chop” Corley stunned him badly proving he is not invincible. If we get into a furious exchange, and I catch him with a sharp counterpunch, anything can happen. And I certainly don’t plan on letting him back me up. He will find I am a lot stronger than he thinks.

Q) I notice your speed and snap was much better when you fought Gatti. Why was that?

Gomez: Well. I am one of those fighters who tends to fight at the level of his opponents and that’s what I did with Arturo. I also worked extremely hard in preparing for that fight. I caught my second wind and my corner told me to go out and finish him and I did. Sometimes, when I fight someone who is slower, I tend to fight at that level myself. It’s just part of my boxer’s makeup. Of course, with Miguel Cotto, I intend to fight at his high level.

Q) Many of your fans have asked me to ask you who are your top favorite fighters and who is your favorite of all time!

Gomez: Many Pacquiao and Kelly Pavlik are my two favorite’s right now, and Chavez was my all time favorite as he was a hero and inspiration to the entire country of Mexico.

Q) When will you be coming east?

Gomez: I’ll be leaving this weekend for a press conference in New York and should have no issues adjusting to the three hour time change. It won’t be like when I went to London. Look, I know what is at stake on April 12 and what it can mean. I am ready. March was a big month for upsets, Campbell beat Diaz, Philips beat Spinks and Casamayor took out Katsidis. Hey, even before that, Paul Williams was upset. 2008 will be the year of boxing upsets and I intend to punctuate that in Atlantic City. I do not plan to disappoint my fans.

The Bull: Thank you Alfonso for taking the time to chat with me. Buena suerte, mi amigo.

Gomez: Thank you, Ted, for the interview

Warriors Boxing/Miranda contemplating legal action!

04.04.08 - In another case of shady dealings sullying the great sport of boxing, Seminole Warriors Boxing, promoters of super middleweight contender Edison Miranda, have discovered that former world champion Mikkel Kessler negotiated in bad faith with Team Miranda and Showtime, agreeing to a May bout while at the same time trying to put together a WBA title fight against a fighter he already defeated, Anthony Mundine..

And Team Miranda is not taking this lightly.

“Given the information we’ve discovered regarding this disgraceful lack of integrity from Kessler and his team, we are seriously considering legal action against them,” said Leon Margules, Executive Director of Seminole Warriors Boxing. “Edison is losing out on a significant payday and national television exposure because of Kessler’s withdrawal from this fight, and we are going to investigate all our options in the coming days.”

After a lengthy negotiation process, Denmark’s Kessler agreed late last month to face Miranda in a May 24th bout to be televised on Showtime. It was a matchup fans deemed to be one of the best super middleweight fights in recent years, but shortly after agreeing to the bout, Kessler withdrew, giving no reason for his withdrawal. As Seminole Warriors Boxing discovered, the reason for Kessler’s sudden case of cold feet was that at the same time he was negotiating with Team Miranda and Showtime, he and his team were petitioning the WBA for a title shot against Mundine.

In a letter from WBA Vice President Gilberto Jesus Mendoza to Kessler, dated March 28, 2008, it was stated:

Dear Mr. Kessler,

The World Boxing Association would like to inform you that after considering your request and that made by Mr. Mogens Palle, Mrs. Bettina Palle and Mr. Michael Marley on your behalf, this Championships Committee has voted to appoint you as the Official Challenger of the WBA Super Middleweight World Champion, Anthony Mundine, based on your qualifications to such distinction.

In a next letter we would clarify the negotiations dates on the division.

Yours truly,

Gilberto Jesus Mendoza
WBA Vice President

^^No prob. I think Marquez is going to need to step it up though, he should stay there for a while and become really annoying. Like honking his horn outside of Pacquiao's house, follow him to the dance clubs, catch him at the grocery store, lol

Las Vegas, NV (April 4, 2008) - Multi-award winning artist Richard T. Slone has completed his latest painting, a pre-fight action painting of boxing champion Bernard Hopkins going toe to toe with unbeaten champion Joe Calzaghe. The two square off later this month in Las Vegas.

The acrylic on canvas masterpiece is 30 inches by 40 inches and has been masterfully created to pay homage to two of the greatest boxers of this era. The spectacular painting pits two linear champions against each other and is painted in typical Slone style, the viewer is placed right in the middle of the action as both boxers submerge in full combat prior to their upcoming ‘Superfight’ which will be held Saturday, April 19th, 2008 in the PH Ring at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The medley of colors and captured expression brings this canvas to life. The powerful flags of the Nations set the patriotic undertones for a fight of epic proportions. Slone’s choice of lines and color make this a bold statement and serve as a clear reminder why Slone was nominated for 2008 Sports Artist of the Year.

“This is one of the most intriguing fights in recent history. I had to paint it!” said Slone, who’s artwork is becoming a staple at high profile events around the globe. Collectors of his art range from celebrity clients and high-roller gamblers, to college kids who collect Slone designed apparel. Slone is best known for his vividly colored images that capture detailed expression and motion. Considered to be a leader in the new generation of sports artists, Slone follows a long tradition of artist’s who have painting boxing such as George Bellows, Thomas Eakins and in more recent decades, LeRoy Neiman.

The ‘Hopkins vs. Calzaghe’ artwork will be featured in the official event program. The Memorabilia Museum in Las Vegas will showcase a collection of Slone artwork during the month of April at the museum located inside the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. To inquire about purchasing originals or prints of Slone’s artwork please contact [email protected].

Richard T. Slone has been hailed by the media as the next great artist. His work is widely collected by art collectors and high-society. Owners of his originals include Donald Trump, Nelson Mandela, Hugh Hefner and Muhammad Ali. He is the official artist of the International Boxing Hall of Fame, an official artist of the UFC and at only 34 years of age is one of the most accomplished emerging artist’s in the world. Earlier this year the National Geographic came to an agreement to publish his work over the next ten years. He is nominated for Sports Artist of the Year 2008.

Ricky Hatton: "Calzaghe Will Beat Hopkins"

By Mark Vester

He may be under contract to Golden Boy Promotions, but Ricky Hatton is not backing Bernard Hopkins, a Golden Boy partner, when the Philadelphia fighter takes on undisputed super middleweight champ Joe Calzaghe on April 19 in Las Vegas. Hatton tells Wales on Sunday that he can't see Calzaghe losing the fight.

“I think Joe is ready for this fight and it’s about time really. With everything he has done in his career, it would have been a crying shame if he didn’t go out to the States. He deserves it, too, because he is one of the best British fighters we have ever had," Hatton said. “This trip is long overdue and he really deserves to go to Vegas and have his name up in lights.”

Hatton says that British fighters, in order to prove themselves, must travel to America to face the best.

“Brits, in order to prove themselves, always have to go over to America,” Hatton said. "They don’t come over here too often and there’s good reason for it because it’s hard travelling half way across the world with eight hours time difference. It’s more difficult the first time you fight over there. But it does get more comfortable over a period of time and the more times you do it.”

“I’m confident he will win and good luck to him. I can’t see Joe losing and, while it’s not a foregone conclusion by any means, with his speed, work rate and busy-ness, I can only see one winner. And the way Joe has prepared for other fights has got him to where he is anyway. So he doesn’t need to change much

Felix Trinidad To Face Jermain Taylor on HBO?

By Mark Vester

A fight is currently being discussed to match former champions Felix "Tito" Trinidad (48-4-1, 32 KO) and Jermain Taylor (27-2-1, 17 KO), with HBO televising in either September or October. This past weekend, promoter Don King met with Felix Trinidad Sr. and his attorneys to discuss the possibility of his Tito fighting Taylor, and then, if his son beats Taylor, a possible meeting down the line with the winner of Joe Calzaghe-Bernard Hopkins, scheduled for April 19.

"HBO has offered us the last week of September or the first one of October to have the fight with Taylor. And later we would be able to go against the winner of the fight between Joe Calzaghe and Hopkins," said King to El Nuevo Dia.

Trinidad returned to the ring in January after a near three-year layoff. He was knocked down twice and went on to lose a unanimous decision to Roy Jones Jr. Despite the loss, Trinidad did well enough in the fight to continue his career. Taylor is coming off back-to-back losses to undisputed middleweight champ Kelly Pavlik.

Trinidad fought Jones at 170-pounds, and Taylor is moving up to 168. There is no word on the weight, but it will likely fall at a catch-weight between super middleweight and light heavyweight. Also, no word if HBO will televise the bout on their regular network or on pay-per-view.

Trinidad Sr., who is also his son's trainer and manager, feels that a fight with Hopkins is the most lucrative fight, but King says that Trinidad should first take on Taylor and then meet Hopkins in a revenge bout. Hopkins handed Trinidad the first defeat of his career in 2001, stopping him in the twelfth-round. At the same time, everyone involved recognizes that Hopkins will be a lot more difficult to negotiate a fight.

"I believe that a fight with Hopkins is the most attractive one for us. We are going to continue speaking, share this information with Tito, and to see what happens," Trinidad Sr. said.

Trinidad vs Taylor is a good tune-up for Jermain. Good way to build some of that confidence back (he'll probably need at least two tune up fights, probably three).

And LMAO @ a tito vs Hopkins rematch. haha
