Steven Luevano Could Get Juanma or Gamboa Next

By Rick Reeno

BoxingScene.com was advised to not be surprised if WBO featherweight champion Steven Luevano was matched against Juan Manuel Lopez or Yuriorkis Gamboa in the near future. Luevano defends his title against Bernabe Concepcion on the August 15 "Pinoy Power 2" pay-per-view. Top Rank promotes all three fighters.

Lopez, the WBO's super bantamweight champion, would move up to featherweight to make the fight. Gamboa is still listed as the WBA's interim champion at featherweight. Top Rank's plan is to build a future mega-bout between Lopez and Gamboa. Both are scheduled to return in the fall. Lopez seems to be the more natural choice between the two. Top Rank needs the right fight to introduce him to the new weight and what better way than a title bout. Luevano is not a big puncher. He does have the boxing ability to test Lopez's superstar worth

Gary Shaw Planning Big Things For Tyrone Brunson

By Jake Donovan

It’s been nearly a year since we’ve last seen unbeaten middleweight knockout artist Tyrone Brunson in the ring, and longer than that since he’s last had his arm raised in victory.

The next time he laces ‘em up, it will be for Gary Shaw Productions.

“We just signed him and are very anxious to get him back in the ring,” Shaw told BoxingScene.com over the weekend of his most recent signing. “He’s a young, exciting kid who we look forward to bringing along.”

The Philly-based Brunson (19-0-1, 19 KO) turned pro in 2005 after enjoying a fair amount of success in the amateurs despite not winning any major championships. He is best known for breaking Edwin Valero’s record for most consecutive first round knockouts at the start of a career, racking up his 19th in a row in March 2008.

However, the streak was largely compiled on the Willy Standup tour, facing fighters ranging from mediocre to barely breathing. The majority of the streak took place in the Midwestern region of the United States, with the record-tying and breaking knockouts going down on the other wide of the world in New Zealand.

The misfortune of his handlers thinking short-term in solely focusing on the record nearly ruined Brunson’s career. His very next fight, which is also his last to date, resulted in a six-round majority draw with Mexican journeyman Antonio Soriano last August in Canada.

Brunson previously fought for Lion Heart Boxing Productions and Don King Productions, but had been a free agent since filing for bankruptcy towards the end of 2007, before recently signing with Shaw.

When exactly he returns to the ring is not yet confirmed, but what can be guaranteed is that he is done with the Bum of the Month club.

“I don’t baby my fighters,” said Shaw, stating in no uncertain terms that he has zero intention if following suit from Brunson’s previous handlers. “Everyone who signs with me is made well aware up front that they have to be ready to fight.”

Which means, we now get to see if Tyrone Brunson can fight.

Former WBO cruiserweight champion Enzo Maccarinelli has announced his retirement from the sport of boxing. Macca has lost three of his last four fights by knockout. last Saturday night in Manchester, he was stopped in three rounds by undefeated Denis Lebedev. He was also stopped by Ola Afolabi in March and was crushed in two rounds by David Haye last year.

"That's it, there was nothing there on Saturday, that wasn't me," Macca said. "Take nothing away from Lebedev, he was a strong fighter, but everyone who has seen me and knows me will recognise that two years ago this kid wouldn't have gone two rounds with me. Abraham vs. Bute/Andrade; A Chance For Early January

By Mark Vester & Thomas Schlabe

There is a small chance that we could see a super middleweight fight with undefeated Arthur Abraham facing the winner of Lucian Bute vs. Librado Andrade. According to an overseas interview with Heiko Mallwitz, the media director for Sauerland Event [who handle Abraham], several things would have to happen for that particular situation to come off.

Abraham would first have to win his first round bout of Showtime's super middleweight round-robin tournament, by beating Jermain Taylor on October 17. In the second round of the tournament, Abraham is scheduled to face Andre Dirrell in January. Dirrell is scheduled to fight WBC champion Carl Froch, also on October 17. The Froch-Dirrell bout is expected to be a very physical encounter.

If Dirrell receives an injury and has to postpone his meeting with Abraham until at least March, Mallwitz says that Sauerland will try to match Abraham with the Bute/Anrade winner in early January and then fight Dirrell. Bute defends his IBF title against Andrade on November 28 on HBO

Andre Dirrell: "Carl Froch Will Be My Easiest Fight"

Unbeaten American star Andre “The Matrix” Dirrell has come out all guns blazing ahead of his Super Six showdown with WBC Super Middleweight Champ Carl Froch on October 17th.

Froch will have home advantage for the clash with promoter Mick Hennessy confirming that the fight will take place at the Trent FM Arena in Nottingham with tickets for the event going on sale next week.

The bouy takes place on the opening night of the Super Six World Boxing Classic, a groundbreaking new tournament which will ultimately crown the World’s best Super Middleweight and produce a strong candidate for the best pound for pound fighter on the planet.

Dirrell, an Olympic medallist from the Athens Games in 2004 has racked up 18 straight wins in the paid ranks and he’s dismissed Froch as the weakest in the Super Six line-up which also includes WBA champ, Mikkel Kessler, IBF Middleweight title holder Arthur Abraham, former Undisputed Middleweight champ Jermain Taylor and 2004 Olympic Gold medallist Andrew Ward.

“I begged to get Froch in my first fight,” revealed Dirrell. “He’s the guy I wanted. This is going to be my easiest fight. This is the fight where I’ll show off and look my best and that’s a guarantee. I’ll look my best there because he’s just that easy to hit and he’s slow.”

Dirrell is distinctly unimpressed with Froch despite the Nottingham man’s back to back fight of the year candidates in winning the WBC title against the unbeaten Jean Pascal last December and defending the belt in April with a dramatic final round KO over marquee American star Jermain Taylor.

“Froch only beat Jean Pascal because Pascal didn’t do his job and fought the wrong fight,” claimed Dirrell. “He fought Jermain Taylor and was losing to Taylor but got fortunate and knocked him out. Froch hasn’t really shown me anything. Honestly if you want to sit back and break it down he’s not really a true champion yet. If he can win this tournament then he’ll become a true champion but he’s not there yet.”

Although he travelled the world during a glorious amateur career Dirrell has yet to fight outside the U.S. as a pro. However he insists that crossing the Atlantic holds no fear for him and he will be looking to restore some American pride to the Super Middleweight division.

“Even before this series came about I wanted to go to the U.K. and beat Carl Froch for the WBC title and then go to Denmark and beat Mikkel Kessler for the WBA title because I want to make a statement to the American fans that we’re not down and out.

“My plan was always to go to Europe and bring those belts home because that’s the American way and I want to fulfil that to the fullest and this tournament gives me the opportunity to do just that and I know for certain that I will. I’m just super hungry because I know that these are the top guys to beat and I’m in a great position and I know that I’m going to come out of this victorious.”

The 26-year-old switch hitter from Flint, Michigan has no doubts that he has the quality to emerge victorious from the Super Six series. “My skill is outstanding, my will is unbearable and my physical strength and mental game are second to none,” claimed Dirrell. “I will beat World Champion after World Champion and that in turn will make me the best out there. That’s what I love about this tournament.”

Although he doesn’t hold Froch in high regard Dirrell appears to have far greater respect for his other European rivals in the Super Six series.

“Mikkel Kessler will definitely be the toughest fight for me and I love Arthur Abraham’s defence so he’ll be another tough opponent. He’s also going to be quicker than the other guys because he’s coming up from a smaller weight class.”

German based Abraham will also be in action on October 17th when he faces Jermain “Bad Intentions” Taylor in the American’s first fight since his dramatic defeat to Froch in Connecticut in April.

The final bout of the first stage of the Super Six round robin takes place on November 21st when Mikkel Kessler squares off against unbeaten American Andre Ward

Calzaghe on Cleverly: "There is Only One of Me"

By Mark Vester

Light heavyweight Nathan Cleverly (17-0, 7KOs) is being compared by many British pundits to Joe Calzaghe. Some are calling him the next Calzaghe. The current BBBofC British and Commonwealth (British Empire) champion is making a real name for himself on the British boxing scene.

Calzaghe disagrees with the media. He says Cleverly is fast but he is no Joe Calzaghe.

“Yes he is fast but don’t forget there is only one Joe Calzaghe. There will only ever be one, simple as that,” Calzaghe told Wales Online.

Nathan is only 22 and the people that are talking about world titles just need to relax a bit,” he said. “Let him fight some tough Americans, guys that will hit him back and put him in the trenches, and see what happens. It’s similar to what happened in my career. I won a lot of fights early on and got carried away."

As far as his good friend Enzo Maccarinelli, Calzaghe says the fighter is rebuilding himself the wrong way by entering fights with good fighters when coming off a bad loss.

“I’m not going to tell Enzo whether he should retire or not. At the end of the day I haven’t spoken to him since the fight. I feel really sad for him because it looks like it could be the end of his career. But you don’t become a bad fighter overnight. I just believe he has lost a lot of confidence and he needs to rebuild it. You can’t do that if you come out of the frying pan and into the fire against another undefeated fighter,” Calzaghe said

^^thanks. Dirrell obviously has a lot of speed and from the clips I've seen looks pretty technically skilled. We'll see how he does against a proven guy though...

I found these fights and will download later, thought I'd share for those that may be interested.

David Haye just dropped down a couple notches in my eyes. Damn, he had Vitali lined up.... Well I take that back. The contract being offered to Haye could have been fucked up, just like it was with Wlad. Beating Valuev and winning a belt I'm sure will give haye more leverage. At least we can see the belt finally taken away from the giant pussy valuev.

Former cruiserweight champion David Haye will get a heavyweight title shot but it won't come against Vitali Klitschko, as has been in the works.

Instead, the former cruiserweight champion will challenge heavyweight titlist Nikolai Valuev on Nov. 7 in Germany after snubbing the deal to fight Klitschko, Haye's trainer and manager Adam Booth told ESPN.com on Wednesday.

The revelation was the end of a curious day. Klitschko manager Bernd Boente and adviser Shelly Finkel couldn't reach Booth to finalize a deal they thought they had agreed to for Klitschko-Haye to meet Sept. 12 at the 55,000-seat Commerzbank Arena in Frankfurt, Germany. The fight would have had live television coverage on HBO in the United States.

Dirrell has good skills and knows when to back the fuck off which is the important thing. He's not gonna get ridiculous in there and go to war if he doesn't have to. The problem with this fight is eventually he might have to and who knows how he's gonna react to that.

His fights Oganov & Hanshaw are impressive but he ended up making them punching bags. Whether that's all his skill or just a lack of his opponents I guess only time will tell.

Andre Dirrell looked crazy good tonight. Besides the first round, which I thought he lost, he battered Anthony Hanshaw. His hand speed was insane, his hooks were getting off nice, he switched from orthodox to southpaw almost flawlessly and then stopped him in the 5th.

.. I'm not one to start ranting and raving over one fight but Hanshaw is far from a scrub fighter and Dirrell made him look like he shouldn't have been there. I can't wait to see Dirrell fight again if he keeps fighting like this.

I highly recommend checking this fight out if you didn't catch it.
^~~ My quote after his fight with Hanshaw. That's how I feel about him .. whether he can make that happen against Froch is what we have to see.
