David Haye Holds UK Press Conference In London - Tells Those Gathered He Is "Gutted"
by James Slater -- Earlier today in London, David Haye held a press conference to speak with members of the media about his regrets regarding his big fight with Wladimir Klitschko being called off due to his suffering a back injury. Haye also spoke about his new hopes for the future. Making his first public appearance since the June 20th fight was sensationally called off last Wednesday, Haye answered some of the questions the boxing writers and fans have been asking since last week..
Appearing with trainer/manager Adam Booth, Haye looked forlorn as he spoke about what happened to his big opportunity.
"This fight in a couple of weeks would have been the pinnacle, everything I have strived for since I was a child," Haye said. "I could not be any more gutted. My whole boxing career, amateur and professional, was leading up to this one night and now it's not happening.
"I was just doing some normal training that I always do, I was shadow boxing, and my back completely went (last Tuesday evening). I am just so distraught about it. The way my back was, I wouldn't have been able to have beaten any single opponent of my entire career - amateur or pro."
Haye added that he will be ready to fight by the end of July and that he can't wait to get back into training once his back is fully fit.
Haye made it clear he still very much wants to face either of the two Klitschko brothers, and that he is desperate to fulfil his lifelong dream of becoming heavyweight champion of the world.
"I want to fight the biggest and the best and whoever is the biggest, the best and available, I will fight," Haye continued. "It's all about me becoming heavyweight champion of the world as soon as possible. I know a fight between me and anybody is massive. I am more than happy to fight them [the Klitschkos]. They know that.
"I agreed to fight Vitali first and then it swapped over to Wladimir. If he [Vitali] would like to give me a voluntary then I would like to let him know I am ready from July."
Haye said that as a fight between he and Wladimir was going to be so big on June 20th, it would still be a huge fight further down the road.
"The fight was going to have the biggest outdoor crowd in history and that was because people wanted to see Wladimir Klitschko defend against David Haye," he said. "If it was going to be the biggest fight in the world in two weeks I am sure it will [still] be the biggest in the world a few weeks down the line. It was a fight the world wanted to see.
"Hopefully Wladimir looks good [against Ruslan Chagaev] and we can keep the ball rolling."
It is now very much up to Wladimir and Vitali as to whether or not Haye gets the big fight he still very much wants. But with the IBF and WBO king busy - against Chagaev first and then likely Alexander Povetkin after that - it looks more and more as though Haye's best hope lies with a voluntary shot given to him by the reigning WBC champion.
Adam Booth made it clear he is still sure his man is Wladimir Klitschko's "worst nightmare." But will we ever get the chance to see if he is right?
