Manny Pacquiao's Next Fight Pencilled In For October 17th - Who Will Meet "Pac-Man" N

by James Slater - As special as Manny Pacquiao's awesome KO of Ricky Hatton was back on May 2nd, the short and sweet - not to mention brutal - win left us all wanting more. It wasn't "Pac-Man's" fault he dispatched "The Hitman" with such ease, but with the fans watching while hoping for a fight that would bring out the best in the superb Filipino southpaw, some inevitably went home with a feeling of dissatisfaction. This is in no way a complaint about Pacquiao; who could complain about such a superb and all-conquering warrior? Nevertheless, we fans are still hungry for more and as such we cannot wait to see the pound-for-pound king back in the ring.

The good news is Pacquiao's next fight is currently pencilled in for October 17th, most likely in Las Vegas. And hopefully this time, as much as we enjoy seeing spectacular knockouts, the action will last a little longer!

Reading the various chatter on the net, there are four or five names being spoken of as possibilities for Pacquiao's October foe. There's the winner of the July 18th clash between the returning Floyd Mayweather and Juan Manuel Marquez, there's "Sugar" Shane Mosley, there's Julio Cesar Chavez Junior, and, as an outside chance, seeing as how Pacquiao has said he has no real interest in facing him, there is Miguel Cotto. Either fight, begging the pardon of Chavez Junior, would be as good as can be expected in the quality match-up stakes.

Of course, there is the possibility Pacquiao will opt to take on another fighter entirely, but there's a reasonable chance the 30-year-old, now all-time great, will face one of the names listed above. We all know who we WANT it to be - the Mayweather-Marquez winner. But that doesn't mean it will happen. Not yet, anyway. if "Money" does as expected and wins on July 18th, he and Pacquiao will surely meet down the road, but it may not be until next year some time.

As with Cotto, the weight issue may prove to be problematic for Mosley when it comes to a fight with "Pac-Man." Manny doesn't want to box any higher than 142-pounds, we hear; and it's unlikely Mosley will relish the idea of coming in that low any more than Cotto does. You know what this may all mean? Many fans won't like it, but Chavez Junior just might wind up getting his "dream fight" after all.

Would this match-up give paying fans more bang for their buck, in a competitive fight sense, than the brief Hatton fight did? Maybe, but it's not too likely. Okay, it's pure conjecture to write about who the sport's most exciting fighter will take on in his next outing, but it's because Pacquiao is so exciting that we writers simply want to write about him! And we can't wait to get busy writing up a report on his next bout.

As high on the pedestal as he is, Pacquiao against anyone but a top-ranked and formidably rated foe would doubtlessly be frowned upon. But this is just what we may get in October; unless something can be worked out with Cotto and/or Mosley. The Mayweather showdown, meanwhile, looks like a blockbuster that we will have to wait a little while longer for yet.

Espinoza Boxing Club Signs Abner Mares

LOS ANGELES, CA (May 25, 2009) World ranked contender Abner Mares has joined forces with The Espinoza Boxing Club, it was announced today by award winning manager Frank Espinoza. The 23 year old Mares, promoted throughout his career by Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions, is currently world ranked #4 by the IBF and WBO. He has compiled an undefeated record of 18-0 with 11 knockouts since turning professional four years ago after an illustrious amateur career which culminated in being a member of the 2004 Mexican Olympic Team.

Mares won the WBO NABO title with an HBO televised unanimous decision win over Damian Marchiano in Atlantic City, New Jersey on November 17, 2007. He followed that with a devastating second round knockout of Diosdado Gabi on the televised portion of the HBO PPV broadcast of the Manny Pacquiao/Juan Manuel Marquez world title bout on March 15, 2008..

Mares made his return from a detached retina injury after an almost one year layoff by stopping Jonathan Perez in the sixth round at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on May 2nd.

“I’m thrilled to begin working with Frank Espinoza as my manager. His work with world champions such as Israel Vazquez and Martin Castillo speaks volumes. I’m confident that having him guiding my career will be a huge advantage as I make my way to a world title bout” said the Nacho Beristain trained Mares.

“The 118 pound division is very hot right now and I’m looking forward to facing the very best, whether it is Fernando Montiel, Joseph Agbeko or Vic Darchinyan who’s moving up to 118.”

Mares is tentatively scheduled to return to action on July 18th on the undercard of the Floyd Mayweather Jr. /Juan Manuel Marquez event at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas .

Said Espinoza, “Abner is just the kind of fighter I want to work with. Just like Israel and Martin, he’s very serious and disciplined in his quest to become a world champion. He’s a great addition to The Espinoza Boxing Club and we’re very proud to work with him.”

The ESPINOZA BOXING CLUB was started in 1991 by Los Angeles area businessman Frank Espinoza.

Espinoza, born and bred in East Los Angeles, was a huge fan of the sport and eventually went on to establish himself as one of the top managers in the world of boxing.

In 2006, Espinoza was awarded the Manager of the Year award from the World Boxing Hall of Fame and inducted into the California Boxing Hall of Fame.

Espinoza’s management style has earned him numerous accolades from several respected print and internet boxing writers. In the September 2008 issue of Ring Magazine, Espinoza was praised for his outstanding handling of the career of junior featherweight world champion and “Pound for Pound” superstar Israel “EL MAGNIFICO” Vazquez.

Along with managing Vazquez also manages a young squad of talented and promising fighters composed of Luis Ramos, Carlos Molina, Abraham Lopez, Ronny Rios, Manny “Suavecito” Roman and Jesus “Pollo” Hernandez.

Among the world champions Espinoza has managed in the past are Martin “Gallito” Castillo, Enrique Sanchez, Isidro “ Chino ” Garcia and “Mighty” Mike Anchondo.

It is the goal of the Espinoza Boxing Club to always fight for our fighter’s best interests and to maximize their potential.

Does anyone want a shot at Shane Mosley?

Kelsey McCarson, theboxingstop.com - After Sugar Shane Mosley (46-5, 39 Kos) demolished Antonio “El Cheato” Margarito” last January, the 37 year old star was seemingly on top of the world. Mosley, unmistakably one of the best fighters of his era, had not only upset the heavily favored Margarito, but he had also put himself in line for another big fight payday.

Or had he?

While everybody and their mom these days seems ready to jump in the ring with any other welterweight in the world, somehow one the division’s biggest stars (and champions) has been left out. How’d it happen?

Fellow welterweights Miguel Cotto and Joshua Clottey square off next weekend in a much anticipated bout on HBO.. Meanwhile, former welterweight champion and resident most-hated-boxer-on-the-planet Floyd Mayweather, Jr. is getting ready to fight lightweight champ Juan Manuel Marquez in a tune-up fight before every fan in the world hopes he gets into the ring with current super world-beater Manny Pacquiao. Andre Berto and Juan Urango are scheduled to fight May 30, Zab Judah is fighting Mathew Hatton on the Mayweather-Marquez undercard, Carlos Quintana will be letting his fists fly on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights soon and Luis Collazo—well he’s already been vanquished by Mosley.

So who does that leave Mosley to fight? Would Manny Pacquiao give up a potential bigger payday against Mayweather to fight the very dangerous Shane Mosley? His trainer, Freddy Roach, says he might but the smart money says he’ll wait on Floyd. Is there anyone in the division left for Shane to fight?

The most avoided boxer in the world, Paul Williams, looks to have left the welterweight division for good. Unable to secure paydays at 147, Williams is not campaigning at 154 and 160. The only other currently rated top 10 welterweights in the world by Ring Magazine are Isaac Hlatsway from South Africa and Vyacheslav Senchenko from the Ukraine. Those guys maybe talented fighters, but they wouldn’t exactly be big paydays for Mosley and neither of them actually deserve a title shot at this point in their careers.

So Shane Mosley will just have to wait and see what happens. Hopefully, things will just sort themselves out soon, because one of the best welterweights in the world and arguably the top dog at 147 should not be left out in the cold in what appears to be the deepest division in the sport. Let’s hope we see Shane in a big fight again soon, because boxing is better when its best stars are in the ring

Olivier Lontchi's Trainer - "We Will Shock Juanma"

Howard Grant, chief trainer of undefeated challenger Olivier Lontchi of Montreal, said today "we're going to shock Juanma Lopez' world" when the two fighters battle on Top Rank's Latin Fury 9 championship card June 27 at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J.

Grant was at a press conference today in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico.

"We're fighting the top gun at 122 pounds in Juan Manuel Lopez," said Grant. "It's a great opportunity. Lontchi is going to put on a shocking performance."

Lopez, the WBO junior featherweight champion, has a record of 25-0 with 23 knockouts. He will make his 4th title defense when he takes on Lontchi, 18-0-2, 8 KOs. Lopez, the 2008 Puerto Rican Fighter of the Year, is one of the biggest rising stars in boxing. Lopez is 25. Lontchi, born in Cameroon, is also 25.

"I'm excited because this will be my first main event in the United States," Lopez said. "I really don't know much of Lontchi, except he is highly ranked and because of that I expect a tough fight."

Lontchi added "....I respect Lopez as a fighter and a person. Inside the ring, however, there is no respect."

Both fighters did their mandatory 30-day weigh-in at the press conference. Lopez weighed 134 1/2, Lontchi was 131. The 30-day limit is 140 pounds.

Lopez vs. Lontchi is promoted by Top Rank and hosted by Caesars Atlantic City. Four fights will be on the Pay Per View telecast.

Pacquiao Targets Mayweather, if He Beats Marquez

Mark Vester

If Floyd Mayweather Jr. gets past Juan Manuel Marquez on July 18 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Manny Pacquiao wants to fight him. Mayweather is a heavy favorite to beat Marquez. Pacquiao wants the fight but says the final call will come from Top Rank and his team. Top Rank's Bob Arum has mentioned WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto as one of the frontrunners to face Pacquiao next. Pacquiao wants to return on October 17.

He doesn't see Marquez as being too much trouble for Floyd. He gives Mayweather the edge is most categories and sees him winning. Pacquiao fought Marquez twice, going to a draw in 2004 and winning a close split decision in 2008. Pacquiao vs. Mayweather is the biggest fight in boxing.

"Mayweather has a lot of advantages. He is faster than Marquez and should be able to win. If he does then I'd like to fight him, although that is down to my promotional team," Pacquiao told the Bangkok Post.

Interesting Light Heavyweight news. Chad Dawson was caught in a damned if he does damned if he doesn't situation. On one hand, everyone wants Chad to rematch Glen Johnson. On the other hand, Tavoris Cloud has been his mandatory for over one year and deserves a title shot, rules are rules and I'm glad the IBF stuck to their guns and threatened to strip the belt away if he doesn't fight Cloud....

Dawson Vacates IBF Title, Glen Johnson Fight Nears

By Mark Vester

It was just reported by promoter Gary Shaw that Chad Dawson has sent a letter to the IBF, officially vacating his light heavyweight title. The sanctioning body was leaning on Dawson to defend the title against Tavoris Cloud.

As reported earlier on BoxingScene.com, a deal for a fall rematch with Glen Johnson is close. HBO is interested in Johnson, but no network has expressed any interest in Cloud. Dawson tried to get more time from the IBF to make the Cloud defense, but the sanctioning body refused the request.

“The IBF rejected our request for an exception to making an immediate title defense against mandatory challenger Tavoris Cloud and inasmuch as no major television network was willing to buy the fight, the IBF left us little choice,” said Shaw.

“I respect the IBF’s decision but the fight they were forcing us to do was commercially unviable. On behalf of Chad, we thank the IBF for the opportunity to fight for its title and to defend it. It’s an honor Chad will always cherish. Now it’s on to bigger and better. Chad looks forward to defending his International Boxing Organization title against the cream of the crop and unencumbered.”

Cloud will now fight number two ranked Clinton Woods for the vacant title.

I don't buy that shit .. I'm sure they could have gotten it on something even if it's a co main event to something else. Hopefully he's not starting to believe that Dawson's a bigger name than he is.

Dawson would've done good for himself blasting out an undefeated fighter on any kind of TV he could get on.

^^You'd think him not being able to sell 1,000 tickets would humble Chad. Or maybe they just don't like the threat of Cloud. Personally I think Cloud has the tools to beat Chad - he's a pressure fighter, which has already been shown Chad doesn't like, plus he's a banger and has a ton of power and Chad doesn't exactly have the best chin. But there are so many questions with Cloud, he's never really been tested and he lacks the experience Dawson has.

Johnson deserves a rematch, but Cloud deserves a shot. I'm not sure which way I would prefer Chad to go. But chad kinda put this on himself, he should have rematched Glen Johnson immediately.

I think a fight with Cloud is the way to go in this situation. Not that Johnson doesn't deserve a rematch, he fought a good fight when they fought, but I'm not a fan of having guys fight mandatory fights and then not giving them the shot.

Only time I don't really mind a mandatory being put on hold or skipped is when a unification is being arranged.

I completely agree.

It has its catch too though. Once you become undisputed you just have so many mandatory challengers and it becomes almost impossible to defend them all in a timely manner without the sanctioning body just stripping you.

Its tough, but I agree...fighters need to start fighting their mandatories more.

^^It shouldn't be that hard for chad though since there is no one in the division. Hopkins wont fight him because chad cant sell tickets. And after glen johnson that's it really, as far as big (or semi-big) names. He's better off cleaning up the division, fighting his mandatories, making a name for himself and the money fights will come to him eventually.

You can't blame the fighters though (for the most part). The sport is so saturated with meaningless organizations and belts that fighting a mandatory is often pointless and horrible for boxing. I quit paying attention to belts and organizations and I don't care about them fighting mandatories. I just want to see good fights.

Mandatories are also made for fighters with no good management or large fanbase behind them. Paul Williams was a mandatory for Margarito before anyone knew who he was. Some mandatory fights are pointless but you also get good fighters that people don't know anything about ..

.. and Chad Dawson hasn't gotten himself to the point where he can be a money fighter. He has to fight and get himself out there before he can make that claim.

Ya, there isn't much at light heavy. It would be nice to see Zsolt Erdei come to the US. The guy has a pretty padded record but it would be good to see him in the mix of things.

Super Middle is packed with people. If any of them wanted a chance to own their own division now would be a good time to move up...

Tyson Fury: Heavyweight prospect doing it the right way

28.05.09 - by Andrew Walker - Tyson Fury the latest in a long line of heavyweight prospects is now 6 – 0 – (6) just six months into his professional career. Those of us that reside in the UK have been able to witness his career to date, live on the free to air digital channel ITV4. In each of his fights he has improved technically and his fitness level seems to be improving also. Tyson Fury has only fought a “low” standard of opposition so far in his first six fights (and wins) and therefore it is meaningless to judge him fairly right now. But that opposition which he has so effortlessly dispatched with is of the level that his domestic rivals would not be facing until maybe their eighth of tenth fight?

No one can honestly argue that Tyson Fury and his promoter Mick Hennessy are not taking each fight with a view to stepping up the level of competition every time so that Fury is improving as he is faced with stiffer opposition. This is a risky but more professional strategy in my opinion, rather then look to pad out his record with “stiffs” and then take a big step up in class in a sink or swim fight (easiest route to a title fight for the least amount of expenditure) a route that is favoured by Britain’s more famous boxing promoter.. If Tyson Fury keeps busy and keeps improving and winning at his current rate then I see no reason why he could not fight for a version of a heavyweight world title by 2011.

Even now I think Fury would be a competitive match for any other British heavyweight out there on his raw talent alone after just six pro fights. As long as he is not avoided (Fury and his team will not wait around for fights as they want to keep busy) then he could well be a British heavyweight champion before the end of this year! I’m sure Fury would like to own a Lonsdale belt outright so three defences of the British title should have him ready for the next level up which is the European strap. Beating the likes of Sprott, Williams and Skelton would be excellent preparation for a European title tilt as all three of them have good experience of campaigning at that level.

Once (all things going to plan obviously) this has been accomplished then I see no reason to defend the European title for too long as Fury should by then be in a ranking position with at least one of the main four boxing bodies (WBC, WBA, WBO & IBF) to challenge for a title. By then Fury might still only be twenty three or twenty four years of age and would have plenty of time and opportunity to both unify the titles and make some serious money in his career. Now to me that sound more like a plan then fighting twenty five or so “easy” fights and then hoping you can land a shot at a world title before you are found out or wanting.

Now there are a lot of ifs, buts and maybes to overcome before any of that becomes a reality as injuries or just one slip up in the ring could see all of that derailed overnight. But for me it is just refreshing to see a boxer and his promoter doing things the right way despite being a touted prospect. A lot of boxers spend too long in the early part of their careers treading water, padding their record, being over protected and learning little in the long run. Kevin Mitchell springs to mind. I really like Mitchell and think he is at the very least European class if not a potential world champion. But his injury aside he has spent far too long fighting “stiffs” relying on his power and chin to win fights. I would suggest he learned more in the Johanneson fight then he has in the rest of his career.

Erdei would never leave Germany or take a harder fight than he has to. He lost both his fights to Garay and I wouldn't doubt there's other questionable decision in his record.

Not like this was going to be an exciting match up but still, it's pretty damn crazy. Chagaev has skills and is undefeated but he's had some weird ass problems. This just adds to the list, looks like he may have hepatitis. Conflicting articles, regardless the fight is off.

Valuev-Chagaev is Still Under Discussion, Possibly Off

By Rick Reeno

I've received a mountain of emails asking me if the rematch between WBA heavyweight champions Ruslan Chagaev and Nikolai Valuev is going forward in Helsinki on Saturday.

I've been in touch with Sauerland Event CEO Chris Meyer, who advised BoxingScene.com that discussions on the matter are still ongoing. From what Meyer, who promotes Valuev, told me - the weigh-in, rules meeting and all of the pre-fight requirements were taken care of. Then four hours after the weigh-in, Chagaev's pre-fight blood test, taken two days ago, came back with a positive result for a mild form of hepatitis B.

Valuev was given two options. Either he can go forward with Chagaev and receive a hepatitis vaccination within 24 hours, or he can fight a replacement opponent. Lamon Brewster, also promoted under Sauerland, and WBA mandatory Kali Meehan, are both willing to replace Chagaev.

Chagaev vs. Valuev Rematch - Entire Show Called Off!

The rematch between WBA heavyweight champion Nikolai Valuev and Ruslan Chagaev has been called off after Chagaev was unable to fulfill the Finnish boxing federation´s medical requirements. Finnish law prevents disclosure of any further private health medical information.

“Unfortunately, we have no other chance but to call the whole show off,” Sauerland Event General Manager Chris Meyer said. “Our top priority is Nikolai´s health and it could not be guaranteed.” Added Valuev: “I would have loved to make this fight but given those circumstances it is not possible.”

The possibility of a replacement opponent was explored but with less than thirty hour’s notice arrangements could not be completed with Kali Meehan or Lamon Brewster. The entire card has been cancelled.
