Amir Khan: "I Plan To Shut Gavin Rees Up"

Amir Khan is desperate for Gavin Rees to beat Andreas Kotelnik on Saturday night - so he can fight the Welshman next.

Unbeaten Rees claimed that he would give the poster boy of British "a pasting" if the pair were to ever meet.

The unbeaten Welshman puts his WBA World Light-Welterweight title on the line against Kotelnik at the C.I.A live on Setanta Sports this Saturday.

And Khan says he will be cheering him on come fight night.

" I've never wanted someone to win a fight so much before," said Khan, who is involved in a WBO World Lightweight title eliminator against Martin Kristjansen at the Bolton Arena on April 5.

" I badly want Rees to win so I can shut him up once and for all.

" He's been calling me out for a while now, and I'd love to take him on. I'll even come to Cardiff and beat him in front of his own fans.

" He's a good champion and is only one weight class higher than me, but I'll happily step up and take him on. I'll be too quick and punch too hard for him.

" I want to be a world champion before the end of the year, and Rees is a realistic target.

" I'm concentrating on my fight with Martin Kristjansen next month, but Rees has got my juices flowing."

Lockett: "Nothing To Fear Against Pavlik"

By Mark Vester

UK middleweight Gary Lockett says that he has no fear of anything that WBC/WBO champion Kelly Pavlik possesses. Lockett will travel across the ocean for a crack at Pavlik's titles on June 7 at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

Lockett was scheduled to fight a tuneup bout, but was asked to withdraw in order to ensure his health. Previous opponent, John Duddy, was forced to withdraw after suffering a bad cut during a tuneup on the Feb. 23 undercard to Klitschko-Ibragimov.

"I've got 12 weeks to prepare for the fight," Lockett told Frank Warren's official website. "I've been in the gym already so I'll be in great shape come June 7 and I'm not going over there to make up the numbers, I'm going over there to win. I would have preferred another warm-up fight. Given Pavlik was supposed to be fighting John Duddy and Duddy got in a warm-up fight that I thought he lost, the Americans wanted to avoid a similar situation.

Lockett knows that most boxing experts view the fight as a mismatch, but he's not discouraged. He is trained Ezno Calzaghe, father/trainer of champion Joe. The elder Calzaghe has thrown him in the ring to spar with Joe and cruiserweight Enzo Maccarainelli on several occasions.

"I don't like to think of myself in the same way as Michael Watson, Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank. I never thought I'd emulate them but I'm now boxing for the WBC/WBO world titles," Lockett said. "Some may see this as a mismatch but I don’t see it like that. Yes, he has boxed by far better people than I have but not in terms of natural talent. He's more of a hard, rugged guy, whereas I’m a heavy-hitting steady boxer puncher. I train with Enzo Maccarinelli who hits harder than Pavlik and Joe Calzaghe who would wipe the floor with him so I'll have nothing to fear on the night."

Rees: "I'll Smash Amir Khan To Pieces"

Gavin Rees says he'll give Amir Khan a pasting - after he's dealt with Andreas Kotelnik in Cardiff on Saturday night.

The Rock defends his WBA light-welterweight crown at the CIA against his dangerous mandatory challenger, live on Setanta Sports.

But he believes he will win - and then go on to wreck the career of Khan later this year.

" Kotelnik is a good fighter, and I know I'll have my work cut out to beat him," said undefeated Rees, who won the belt against Souleymane M'Baye last summer.

" But I'm in the shape of my life and ready to go 12 hard rounds against anyone. I don't believe Kotelink can beat me."

And the 27-year-old Welshman added that he also fancies a shot at Commonwealth lightweight champion Khan.

" He's been opening his gob a lot recently, but if he does that when he's near me I'll stick my fist straight in it," said Rees at a public work out today.

" Khan reckons he's Mr Big, but put him in the ring with me and I'll give him a right good pasting. I really believe I'll smash him to pieces.

" After I've sent Kotelnik packing I'll be straight on the phone to our promoter Frank Warren begging him to get the Khan fight done, because I'll knock him out in six rounds."

Sycuan Ringside Promotions announced today that World Boxing Organization (WBO) 130-Pound Champion Joán Guzman has signed a multi-fight-multimillion dollar contract with their promotional company. Guzman, currently in Las Vegas, Nev., is preparing for his title defense against interim champion Alex Arthur on April 26, 2008. The fight, which is being promoted by Frank Warren of Sports Network after having won the WBO purse bid, will take place in Edinburgh, Scotland, at a venue to be determined

What would it take for that to happen...the fight, that is? Do you see it? They'd have to meet at...what...140?
it would never happen. in order for guzman to even be considered is if he beats pacquiao, marquez, moves up to 135, cleans out that division as well and becomes a superstar. He has a hard enough time landing a single big fight, so it's improbable. Mayweather is all about the money (obviously) so if guzman cant bring in hella millions, it wouldn't happen.

But if were to happen, Mayweather is a hella small dude. 147 is too big for him, honestly, He could fight at 135 if he wanted to, or a catch weight of 140. it's not a stretch at all. And guzman weighs a lot more then what he fights in, he was around 147 pounds his last fight against soto on fight night (gained 15-20 pounds over night).

It'd probably be a boring fight to most people though, just because of their styles are so similar.

^^That's very possible too! Pacman blows up after the weigh in as well. I mean shit, if they're talking about a possible de la hoya vs pacman, then mayweather makes even more sence since he's a lot smaller.

Arum: JM Marquez Must Look To Valero Or Guzman As Next Opponent!

b Arum, the helpful elf that he can be at times, does not want to see the top echelon of the 130-pound division lie dormant while Manny Pacquiao tests lightweight waters against WBC champ David Diaz.

So the Pacman promoter has this suggestion when Mexican ringmaster Juan Manuel Marquez is done licking his wounds from his second bout with the Pinoy idol, take on undefeated Dominican,WBO champion Joan Guzman, undefeated WBA KO artist Edwin Valero or both of them.

“I keep saying this but I said it before Saturday’s bout and I will say it once again,” Arum told Boxingconfidential from his Las Vegas think tank. “and that is that Juan Manuel is an exciting fighter. There is no reason for him to just sit around while Manny is moving up in weight, which he is, against David.

“What Marquez should do is to fight Guzman, fight Valero or fight them both. Look, it’s not like the rest of the 130-pounders are all tomato cans. I’d say that Marquez against Guzman is a good matchup of styles and I can say the same thing for Valero against Marquez.”

Guzman has a mandatory title defense finally set for May 3 in Edinburgh, Scotland, against outgunned Scotsman Alex Arthur. If he gets past Arthur, would Guzman be interested in battling Marquez?

“No doubt,” Guzman manager Jose Nunez said. “We just resigned with Sycuan and we want the most meaningful bouts we can get so that includes Pacman, Marquez, Valero and anyone else. But Priority 1 is Alex Arthur and we’ve got to go overseas and take care of that business first.

“I do appreciate the shout out from Bob Arum though.”

Boxer from Washington State dies

Two-time Washington State champion Raphael Ortiz passed away last night in Portland, Oregon. Raphael was 30 years old. Ortiz last fought 10 days ago, losing his belt to Mike Lucero in an eight-rounder in Ferndale, Washington. Raphael was taken to Oregon Health Science Hospital in Portland, Oregon two days later with flu-like symptoms. Ortiz was one of the most beloved fighters in the Northwest and a fan favorite at every venue he fought at, always making for exciting fights. His 13 KOs in 14 wins placed him at the top of the big punchers in his division, and he finishes with a 14-14-2 record in winning Washington State titles in two weight divisions. His two wars with Rob Frankel will be remembered as the best fights in the Northwest in the past several years. Raphael was trained by Jesse Ramos and managed by Wally Jorgenson. He leaves behind his wife Avelina and children Marcos and Ann Lee. Rest in peace Champ.

Guzman would box circles around Valero. But I think Marquez would give him problems...I'd take Marquez in that fight if it did happen ( and I hope it does )

That would be a dope fight !

Floyd Mayweather To Dump Uncle Roger?

by David P. Greisman

His opponent for this month’s Wrestlemania 24 is 7 feet tall and weighs 441 pounds, but welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. has other big things on his mind.

“Lately I’ve been upset with my uncle Roger,” Mayweather said Thursday on a conference call promoting the March 30 wrestling extravaganza. “My uncle Roger has been training Steve Forbes. That’s taking money out of my pocket.”

Forbes is the 31-year-old former junior lightweight titlist handpicked to face Oscar De La Hoya this May on HBO. Forbes’ trainer, Roger Mayweather, is also the longtime chief second to nephew Floyd.

De La Hoya hired Freddie Roach to train him for his May 2007 split decision loss to Mayweather. Now, though, he is working once again with Floyd’s father and Roger’s brother, Floyd Mayweather Sr.

To De La Hoya, Forbes is a smaller, quicker boxer who will help get him prepared for a November rematch with Mayweather. But that’s now how Mayweather sees things. Rather, he believes Roger is jeopardizing the best-laid plans – a Forbes victory could cost De La Hoya his shot at revenge, in turn costing both Mayweathers lucrative cuts of the pay-per-view take.

“Right is right and wrong is wrong,” Floyd Mayweather said. “He must realize this. With him training Steve Forbes, he’s taking a ton of money out of his own mouth.

“I told him on numerous occasions, ‘Do not train Steve Forbes,’ ” he said. “And he’s training the guy at my boxing gym.”

Mayweather said he hasn’t spoken with his uncle in nearly a month, when they saw each other at one of Floyd’s many birthday parties. There’s been no falling out, he said, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be a change in his corner.

“If it’s not done within a couple of weeks, then I’m going to get a new trainer,” Mayweather said. “I may have to pay my dad more than what Oscar De La Hoya is paying him.”

This is dope, this is the guy that will be helping to train hopkins prepare for Calzaghe. This guy is RUTHLESS! Below is from an interview when he talks about training jones and hopkins.

::::::

Everlast: How does training boxers differ from the other types of athletes you train?

MS: First of all, boxing is a totally unique sport. Boxing is the only sport where a boxer has a license to kill. If a man hits another man, and the other man doesnt get up, no one goes to jail. Inside the ring, theres no difference between boxing and war. The ring is the theater of operations, with a Geneva Convention called a referee. Everything else is a childs sport. Boxing is controlled aggression. When we (Jones Jr.) fought John Ruiz, we went in there to break his nose, get him to breathe through his mouth, target his chest with shots; essentially reverse CPR to slow his heart rate. Tarver was lucky he didnt have his jaw broken, because that was the goal in training Bernard. I consulted with surgeons as to how to break a jaw. We called Tarver a cobra, because cobras only have one type of attack. I had Bernard Hopkins reading about mongooses, an animal particularly effective in killing cobras. So what Im getting at is that all the other sports pale in comparison. Boxers literally have to look out for their lives.

Hopkins has "Dream Team"

The Execution Squad Prepares Hopkins For April

LOS ANGELES. - With his entire team assembled at his training camp in Los Angeles, CA, light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins is settling into his intensive routine for what will be the most highly anticipated contest in boxing so far this year.

Supported by trainers Freddie Roach, coming off his Saturday night triumph with his other star pugilist Manny Pacquiao; Nazim Richardson, who is the longest reigning member of Hopkins team; and southpaw specialist John David Jackson, who also saw victory this month with Nate Campbell’s win over Juan Diaz, Hopkins is leaving nothing to chance.

“This guy Calzaghe is a tough customer and his record shows that,” said Hopkins. “But I don’t think he and his father can actually “out corner” my corner when it comes to expertise and preparation. I consider my crew the “execution” squad, boxing’s elite and a vital part to my success, which will be the case on April 19. Not only am I going to beat Joe Calzaghe, I’m going to punish him and Enzo Calzaghe will be forced to stop being the trainer and start being the father and save his son for another day, the same way Don Felix Trinidad saved Tito from me.”

Also joining the training trio is conditioning expert Mackie Shilstone, who sports a perfect 5-0 record when it comes to victories for the fighters— the likes of which include Michael Spinks, Riddick Bowe, Roy Jones and Hopkins—he has worked with over the course of his boxing career,.

“Bernard might be older but his body responds like a young champion,” said Shilstone. “We work out together and I watch the opponents’ tapes with him too. Trust me, we will be ready.”

Hopkins vs. Calzaghe “Battle of the Planet,” is presented by Golden Boy Promotions, Frank Warren’s Sports Network and the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino. The match-up will air live from the Planet Hollywood Ring on HBO’s World Championship Boxing beginning at 9:45 p.m. ET / 6:45 p.m PT.

Remaining tickets are priced at $1500, $1200, $750, $450, $350 and $250 and may be purchased by calling 866-USFIGHT or online at planethollywood.com.

One of the greatest middleweights of all-time, Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins (48-4-1, 32 KOs) owned the middleweight title for over ten years before moving up to the light heavyweight division in 2006, and immediately won The Ring Magazine World Championship with a dominating 12 round decision win over Antonio Tarver. In his last fight, on July 21, 2007, Hopkins continued his amazing run at the age of 42, outpointing Winky Wright. Now it’s on to Calzaghe.

Unquestionably one of the greatest super middleweights in boxing history and currently The Ring Magazine Super Middleweight World Champion, Newbridge, Wales’ Joe Calzaghe (44-0, 32 KOs) has never tasted defeat in his pro career and has held the world super middleweight title since he defeated Chris Eubank in 1997 for the World Boxing Organization Championship. Twenty-one consecutive title defenses followed that victory -- fourth-best on boxing’s all-time list -- and after big wins over undefeated champions Jeff Lacy in 2006 and Mikkel Kessler in 2007 in which he added the International Boxing Federation (IBF), World Boxing Association (WBA) and World Boxing Council (WBC) championship belts to his collection, he now seeks a bigger challenge at 175 pounds where Hopkins awaits.
