Cunningham Calls PED Use ‘Massive’ Problem In Boxing

Posted by: Keith Idec on 8/12/2015 .

By Keith Idec

NORTH BERGEN, N.J. – Steve Cunningham claimed Tuesday that there is a “massive” steroid problem in boxing, particularly within the heavyweight division.

“I’ve fought guys on steroids before and beat ‘em,” Cunningham said before an open workout at Global Boxing Gym. “I know that for a fact. I’m not saying any names, but boxing’s a small community. Everybody talks. If you’re in training camp, everybody’s trading stories. … We know steroid use is rampant in boxing. A lot of people know. Everybody should know. Guys is out here killing their wives for $200,000 in life insurance. You don’t think people are going to cheat for a possible shot at a heavyweight world title?”

Philadelphia’s Cunningham (28-7, 13 KOs), a former cruiserweight champion, is scheduled to face former light heavyweight champ Antonio Tarver (31-6, 22 KOs, 1 NC) in a 12-round heavyweight fight Friday night at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.

The California State Athletic Commission suspended Tarver for a year because he tested positive for an anabolic steroid, drostanolone, following a June 2012 fight against Lateef Kayode in Carson, Calif. His steroid suspension also cost Tarver his television job as an analyst for Showtime, which televised the Kayode fight.

The 39-year-old Cunningham didn’t suggest Tarver, 46, is on steroids. He also said he didn’t undergo random blood and urine testing throughout training camp for this fight. Tarver was scheduled to be part of the open workout to promote Friday’s Premier Boxing Champions card (Spike; 9 p.m. ET/PT), but didn’t attend and couldn’t be reached for comment regarding Cunningham’s comments or whether he was tested throughout camp.

“It was there, available for us,” Cunningham said in reference to random blood and urine testing for the Tarver fight. “But me and my wife, we just didn’t put it up there. It wasn’t a top priority at the time. We just didn’t press the issue at the time. Then it hit me later in camp. And we’re just like, ‘We’ll just settle for the before and after tests.’ ”

Nick Lembo, general counsel for New Jersey’s State Athletic Control Board, said Tuesday that Tarver and Cunningham, like all boxers and MMA fighters that compete in the state, will be subject this week to pre-fight and post-fight blood, urine and hair testing for performance-enhancing drugs including blood doping, diuretics, external testosterone, human growth hormone, masking agents and steroids. New Jersey’s SACB tests in accordance with World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) guidelines and sends samples only to labs approved by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA).

Though Cunningham didn’t demand random blood and urine testing throughout camp for this fight, he said he would seek monetary compensation if an opponent ever tests positive for a PED.

“It should be mandatory for every fight,” Cunningham said, again referring to random blood and urine testing. “I have personal views of steroid use in boxing. We’re already men who are, to an extent, super. We’re already men with great athletic abilities, with power, more power than the average man. So anybody using any type of drug or anything illegal to get more power, and to get in the ring to do that, I mean, we see guys die from the average fighter. Now we have guys that are trying to make themselves even more powerful? What happens when the first guy gets caught using steroids and he kills a guy in the ring? What happens?

“Me, personally, if I ever fight a guy and he gets busted on steroids, I’m putting a civil suit on him for attempted murder. You know? Assault and battery. You know? That’s how serious this is. Boxing isn’t a game. It’s not basketball. It’s not football. It’s close to hockey. … But it’s so dangerous already, and for these guys to go and soup themselves up even more, I think that’s criminal. We wanted the test, just because this man [Tarver], he has a history now. That’s what he got busted on. I don’t know what he’s doing. I hope he isn’t, for his sake. But I know for a fact that I fought guys and beat them [when they were] on steroids before. We’ve got rules for a reason in boxing, you know?”

PBC being in it's infancy as a brand shouldn't even be brought up. We have a pattern of matchmaking throughout the years by fighters signed to Haymon, and it's normally poor matchmaking with some cool fights sprinkled in. You'll never see me complain about 2 top 10 fighters fighting each other no matter how much I think the skill disparity is, but the fights should at least make sense and have a purpose.

Quillin is coming off a draw to Andy Lee, in a fight where a lot of people think he won. Unless they don't think he can make 160 there's no reason for this fight. He should at the least be in with a borderline contender in the division or an eliminator of some sort. There's no building that's needed if they want to make Quillin/Jacobs for a ridiculous secondary title.

I liked the BounceTV card and they put on a legit title fight and buried it on a channel not available in a lot of markets and even less in HD, with Payano an actual champion no secondary title bullshit.

It's not nit picking to say that if you have the deepest roster in boxing you should be making cool fights. Putting Arreola Vs. Harper is laughable, that fight turned out good but that wasn't a good fight to be made.

And I'll disagree with 2-0 on the list a bit too. Just because some of the fights didn't turn out to be all that great doesn't mean they were bad fights to make either. Vargas Vs. Omotoso, Fortuna vs Vasquez, Kameda vs McDonnell, Dirrell vs Degale (this was a mandatory not an actual made fight by them), Lee vs Quillen, Garcia vs Peterson, Khan vs Algieri (falls into my top guys fighting each other category) were good fights to be made regardless of how they turned out.

Manny’s miraculous recovery

Posted on Wednesday Aug 12th at 12:00am
SPORTING CHANCE By Joaquin M. Henson

Manny Pacquiao, the only fighter in history to win eight world titles in different divisions, raised his right arm upward and showed no discomfort in appearing to have fully recovered from a torn rotator cuff suffered during his fight against Floyd Mayweather in Las Vegas last May.

“No problem,” said Pacquiao displaying full vertical extension on his arm during a break at the 2019 FIBA World Cup bidding event in Tokyo last Friday. “I’m fine. It’s God’s work. I never saw a doctor. I never did rehab. All I did was to swim in the sea as often as I could. The salt water healed my wound.”

Pacquiao’s business manager Eric Pineda, who was also in Tokyo, called it a miraculous recovery. “Manny has strong faith,” he said. “God did it. And all that swimming in the sea helped. Now, there’s talk of his comeback fight.”

Pineda wouldn’t divulge what’s in the oven but a news report came out yesterday quoting Top Rank promoter Bob Arum conjuring visions of a Pacquiao bout against UK Olympic silver medalist Amir Khan in Dubai or Las Vegas. Arum is supposedly meeting with Khan’s team in London this weekend to discuss the possibility of a match in March next year.

Arum said Khan should’ve been given a crack at fighting Mayweather on Sept. 12 and said it’s a “farce” that The Best Ever is facing shop-worn, easy-to-hit Andre Berto. Khan has been bypassed as an opponent at least twice by Mayweather who seems to think the Englishman of Pakistan descent is a risky proposition. Arum said if Mayweather isn’t inclined to give Khan a chance, Pacquiao is.

Khan, 28, has a 31-3 record, with 19 KOs, compared to Pacquiao’s 57-6-2, with 38 KOs. Pacquiao will be 37 if and when they meet next year. Khan has won his last five outings while Pacquiao is 3-3 in his last six. Khan’s last five victims were Carlos Molina, Julio Diaz, Luis Collazo, Devon Alexander and Chris Algieri. Only Molina didn’t go the distance with Khan. As for Pacquiao, his last three victims were Brandon Rios, Timothy Bradley and Algieri. His last three tormentors were Bradley, Juan Manuel Marquez and Mayweather.

Arum welcomed a Pacquiao-Khan battle and said it will be a test for both fighters. He picked Pacquiao to win because Khan wouldn’t be able to withstand the power of his punches. Khan has been stopped twice, by Breidis Prescott in the first round and Danny Garcia in the fourth. He lost a split decision to Lamont Peterson. Khan was decked by Willie Limond and Diaz before winning in two close calls. Since Khan has taken a lot of trips to the canvas, the consensus is he won’t last long with Pacquiao.

Arum said another fight he’s arranging is WBA superbantamweight champion Scott Quigg against Nonito Donaire, Jr. That could be staged in Dubai or somewhere in England before the year ends. Donaire has no preference as to where to face Quigg. His goal is to become a world champion again and Quigg is his ticket to achieving that aim.

A possibility is for Pacquiao to fight Khan in Manila but that would depend on sponsors putting up the money to make it happen. Arum will evaluate the money involved in staging Pacquiao’s comeback fight in Manila, Dubai and Las Vegas before making a recommendation.

Pacquiao readily agreed to join the Philippine delegation in Tokyo. The two other Congressman who made the trip were Rep. Robbie Puno of Antipolo and Rep. Rey Umali of Oriental Mindoro. The other elected government officials in the delegation were Sen. Sonny Angara and Mayor Monico Puentevella of Bacolod.

“It’s not easy to convince Manny to take a trip,” said Pineda. “There has to be a cause involved, something he’s supporting. He wanted to show his support for the Philippine bid to host the World Cup.” Pacquiao went to Tokyo with wife Jinkee and a party of 10.

* * * *

At the sidelines of the bidding event, Pacquiao and retired NBA player Yao Ming were mobbed by media. They obliged the press by answering questions of any variety. In a press conference, Pacquiao said the Philippine bid was anchored on the Filipinos’ passion for the game.

“More than 100 million Filipinos will be supporting the World Cup if ever we host it,” he said. “The impact will be major. As a boxer, I love basketball. Our objective is to be able to show the world not only our passion for the game but also our ability to host a major sporting event.” The Philippines, however, lost to China in the bidding by a vote of 14-7 from the FIBA Central Board.

While Pacquiao was focused on backing the Philippine bid, it didn’t stop media from bombarding him with questions about boxing. Someone asked if he thought Berto has a chance of beating Mayweather. Pacquiao nodded, saying, “yes, he has a chance.” He didn’t elaborate. Another asked if he’d like to face Mayweather in a rematch. Once again, Pacquiao nodded, saying, “yes,” nothing else. Clearly, he didn’t want to take attention away from the Philippine bid. It was why Pacquiao was in Tokyo after all.

Regarding Pacquiao’s arm, Arum was quoted as remarking that the recovery is unbelievable. Apparently, Pacquiao has sent images of extending his arm to Arum who in turn showed them to doctors. Arum said the doctors were amazed at the recovery. Pacquiao just never ceases to amaze.

It's a good point that PBC is in it's infancy and should be allowed at least a full year to really judge where there at, how it's been for the sport, etc. And I was saying that in the beginning, what did I say, something like I'll be cautiously optimistic, something along those lines.

[quoteQuillin is coming off a draw to Andy Lee, in a fight where a lot of people think he won. Unless they don't think he can make 160 there's no reason for this fight. Its such a terrible fight! And all this to "build up" the Jacobs fight, which they've could have made a long time ago. No need to build it up, just fight. It's not like it's a huge fight or anything.

I liked the BounceTV card and they put on a legit title fight and buried it on a channel not available in a lot of markets and even less in HD, with Payano an actual champion no secondary title bullshit.
I couldn't even find this channel, doesn't look like I have it unfortunately.

It's not nit picking to say that if you have the deepest roster in boxing you should be making cool fights. Putting Arreola Vs. Harper is laughable, that fight turned out good but that wasn't a good fight to be made.
Exactly man. There is no need for these kinds of fights, no point at all.

I wouldn't even care except the fact that PBC/Haymon have a HUGE opportunity to bring boxing to the mainstream so why waste this limited time on joke fights? Why not make the best of it, make a bang? I don't get thr strategy of making a few good fights with a bunch of average or flat out terrible fights. This is investors spending millions upon millions of dollars here and they'll stop funding eventually. I just don't get it.

And I'll disagree with 2-0 on the list a bit too. Just because some of the fights didn't turn out to be all that great doesn't mean they were bad fights to make either. Vargas Vs. Yeah, some are good but nothing really special (on paper). I mean seriously, all of these cards what were great fights? Thurman vs Guerrero, Broner vs Porter, Garcia vs Peterson. That's it. They aren't making really good fights that the fans want to see. I mean Vargas vs Omotoso, Fortuna vs Vazquez, and the others those are decent, under card quality fights. But where are great fights? Porter, Thurman, Khan, Garcia, Spence, Maidana all guys at 147 and all guys not fighting each other. Seems logical it would have been Thurman vs Khan instead of Algeiri, or Thurman vs Porter, or Porter vs Khan, or any of these guys against each other would make sense. I don't understand the matchmaking at all.

Maybe if we were talking about ratings or brand recognition, it'd be a valid point that it's in it's infancy, but these guys aren't new to boxing and just because it wasn't PBC before we still have the track record of matchmaking. I don't think we can blame poor matchmaking on the fact that PBC is still in the early stages.

I don't understand the matchmaking either in terms of what they're trying to build towards, but I also can't knock a good fight because a better one could've been made if that makes sense. I'd rather see Khan fight Algieri over Garcia fighting Malignaggi. That doesn't mean I think Khan fighting Algieri is the best fight that could've been made with Khan, just that it's at least a credible fight.

I also feel they should get credit for Vazquez Vs. Omotoso and Fortuna Vs. Vazquez type fights. That's how you build guys up into becoming main event fighters (which I think Vazquez will be soon enough) by putting them in with tough fighters and move on from there. Vazquez could've easily fought a scrub and got a stoppage but they put him in with Omotoso.

Tim Coleman, Wife Accused Of Killing Elderly Woman
Tim Coleman, Wife Accused Of Killing Elderly Woman - Boxing News

by David P. Greisman
The wife of former junior welterweight prospect Tim Coleman has already been arrested in the stabbing death of an 84-year-old woman who lived nearby in Las Vegas. Now, Coleman could be facing charges as well, according to the Associated Press.
“Timothy Coleman is jailed in an unrelated felony vehicle vandalism case, and prosecutor David Stanton told a judge that he'll seek an indictment against Coleman in the slaying of 84-year-old Mary Luebeck,” the article said. “Luebeck was stabbed to death early July 29, and items including a purse, credit cards, jewelry and cash were stolen from her home near Desert Inn Road and Decatur Boulevard, according to a police report.”
Prosecutors said they found fingerprints belonging to Coleman’s wife, Margarita Balandova, on blinds near the victim’s body. Both husband and wife are pointing their fingers at each other in this case.
“A police report says Coleman told detectives that his wife left their house alone early July 29 and returned hours later shoeless with blood on her clothes. Coleman told police that Balandova told him she had killed someone and that he took the clothes and burned them,” the article said. “Balandova blamed Coleman for the slaying, and she told police she walked through Luebeck's house looking for him.”
Coleman, 31, turned pro in 2005, suffered his first loss by unanimous decision to James De La Rosa in 2008, then soon dropped down to 140, where he edged Mike Arnaoutis, knocked out Patrick Lopez and scored one more win to put him into a fight with Vernon Paris. Except it was Paris scoring the seventh-round technical knockout in 2011, which proved to be the beginning of the end for Coleman. He fought once in early 2012 and once more in late 2013, getting stopped in two rounds each time by Kendall Holt and Zahir Raheem.
His record was 19-4-1 (5 KOs).

Don King Files Lawsuit To Prevent Mosley-Mayorga II Don King Files Lawsuit To Prevent Mosley-Mayorga II - Boxing News #boxing

Don King is a dick. He's been doing this to Mayorga for years. Last year he was able to prevent Mayorga against just some random journeyman on a small card, and of course that MMA fight a couple years back, which forced Mayorga to fight some MMA matches in Nicaragua. When Mayorga fought Cotto on PPV a few years back, Mayorga only made a few thousand dollars, King took like 95% of his money to pay back legal fees.

Which is sad because what is Mayorga to Don King at this point? He's a washed up 40-something year old fighter just trying to make a living. It's not like Mayorga is raking in the doe at this stage. A true bloodsucking monster is King. Mayorga signed some contract years ago probably around the Forrest fights where King basically owns his soul. Mayorga has tried to sue him as well, citing the Ali Act amongst other things but King's lawyers always win in court. I'm sure this fight is going to be cancelled which again is sad because Mayorga just wants to make a little bit of money. King is like 85 years old, why can't he just let Mayorga do his thing, what difference is it going to make in Don Kings life? It's so insignificant, which goes to show how evil he is. Fucking with a man's living for no reason.

Who wants to fight Margarito?

I'm assuming he's chasing Cotto for a trilogy, and that he'll come back at 154, but what's the point? Just stay at home with the Wife and poodles, have fun.

I'm guessing they'll try to get him in with Kirkland? Molina, Willie Nelson or somebody? after a soft touch first fight of course.

Premier Boxing Champions (PBC): Is Al Haymon launching a Super Six Tournament?

Premier Boxing Champions (PBC): Is Al Haymon launching a Super Six Tournament?
Since the inception of the Premier Boxing Champions back in March, the organization has had some solid main events in the welterweight division such as Adrien Broner vs. Shawn Porter and Danny Garcia vs. Lamont Peterson.

However, they’ve also had their share of main events that were not in high demand such as Danny Garcia vs. Paulie Malignaggi, and Robert Guerrero vs. Aaron Martinez.

Due to the subpar matchups, Al Haymon has been scrutinized for not making the best fights that could be made.

Perhaps scheduling conflicts is to blame? Or Haymon's having trouble pleasing all of his fighters?

... Or maybe he was waiting for the opportune time to put together the best fights?
With Floyd Mayweather set to fight for the 49th and final time on September 12th against Andre Berto, boxing will be in need of the next king of the welterweight division.

Therein lies the perfect opportunity for Haymon to make the best possible fights in a welterweight tournament.

Concept: Take the six best welterweights and have them compete in a tournament similar to the Showtime Super Middleweight Super Six Tournament that was launched several years ago.

The fighters the PBC tournament would consist of undefeated and IBF champion Kell Brook, Keith Thurman, Shawn Porter, Amir Khan, Danny Garcia, and Marcos Maidana if he’s still able to make the 147 pound limit.

Here’s a look at the possible first round matchups for the Super Six.

Kell Brook vs. Amir Khan - For the past several years these two have engaged in verbal battles and Khan has stated that Brook was not worthy of a fight with him will Kell accussed Khan of ducking.

If Mayweather stays true to his word and retires, Brook vs. Khan is the biggest financial fight that can be made in the welterweight division. They could have the fight in Wembley stadium and we'd find out once and for all who is the best welterweight from the United Kingdom.

Danny Garcia vs. Shawn Porter - When Garcia fought Malignaggi at the Barclays Center on August 1st, Shawn Porter and his dad, Kenny, were in attendance. The elder Porter made it clear that they were there because they had their eyes on Garcia. This would be an intriguing fight between two fighters and the back and forth chatter between the fighters dads would certainly provide entertainment.

Keith Thurman vs. Marcos Maidana - This fight would pit the two hardest punchers in the division against one another. It would be the all-action slugfest that fans have been wanting to see for quite some time. This would be a candidate for Fight of the Year and may come down to who take the better punch.

So if Haymon’s plan was to put together the best fights at the most opportunistic time it was a sound strategy that will pay hugs dividends.

With a Super Six tournament featuring some of the most talented fighters in the sports, PBC would be the center of the boxing world in 2016.

Cotto to get $30 million+, Canelo $10 million+ for mega-fight

13Facebook17Twitter3Google+

cotto563By Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) and 25-year-old former IBF/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) are both going to make a ton of money for their November 21st fight on HBO pay-per-view from the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The 34-year-old Cotto, who promotes himself, will be making $30 million, according to elnuevodiario. For his part, Canelo will be getting $10 million plus for the fight, which will easily be the biggest payday of his career.

This is big money for a couple of guys who aren’t considered to be the No.1 fighters in the 160lb division. Canelo is considered as the No.2 fighter in the 154lb division right now behind Floyd Mayweather Jr., even though Canelo hasn’t fought at junior middleweight for two years since his one-sided 12 round decision loss to Mayweather in 2013.

Cotto is seen by many boxing fans as the No.2 fighter in the 160lb division, behind IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin.

“It is expected that the current monarch [Cotto] of the World Boxing Council (WBC) has more than $ 30 million income while Alvarez could barely see his utmost to raise $ 10 million,” said elnuevodiario.com. “[Cotto] has a promotional agreement of three fights with Roc Nation Sports, is now its own promoter, allowing you to keep your hand a big slice of money as part of the negotiation.”

Ring Magazine has Cotto as their Ring champion, but that’s an organization and equal to the massive amounts of fans who simply see Golovkin as a better fighter than Cotto. The fans aren’t seeing it the way that Ring Magazine sees it with them figuring Cotto is the best because he beat former WBC champion Sergio Martinez.

The fans saw the Cotto-Martinez fight and they observed how one of Martinez’s legs looked very wobbly from the moment the fight started. Because of that, Cotto doesn’t get a lot of credit from the fans for having beaten Martinez. The fans also wonder why Cotto hasn’t fought Golovkin all this time, because the Kazakhstan fighter has wanted to face Cotto for the past two years, and he’s had no luck in getting him inside the ring.

Staging the fight at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, was also a move that will pay off for Cotto.

The kind of money that Cotto is making for the Canelo fight is similar to the money that Mayweather has been making in some of his fights in his Showtime/CBS contract. What remains to be seen is whether the Cotto vs. Canelo fight will bring in 1 million pay-per-view buys or more. If it does, then you can expect these two fighters to wind up making even more than what was originally expected.

Certainly, the fight will sell out the Mandalay Bay Resort in no time flat. It’s no question the fight will be a sellout. The only real question is how many PPV buys the fight will bring in. With the way that Canelo’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions is talking, the fight will bring in a huge number of PPV buys.

De La Hoyta hasn’t made a prediction yet for how many buys he thinks it will be bringing in, but with him talking about it breaking records, he must be assuming that it’s going to bring in more than 4 million buys. Why else would De La Hoya be talking about it breaking records?

Of course, no one in their right mind actually believes the Cotto-Canelo fight will get anywhere close to the number of buys that the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao fight brought in last May. That was a huge fight. Cotto-Canelo is more of a fight between a second fiddle in the middleweight division in Miguel Cotto and a fighter still trying to rebuild his career in Canelo Alvarez. As I said before, Cotto isn’t seen as the No.1 guy in the middleweight division right now.

Golovkin is the No.1 guy. Cotto could have already shown that he was the No.1 fighter if he’d agreed to fight Golovkin and beaten him. But if Cotto had made that move he also could have likely been beaten to a pulp and knocked out by Golovkin. In that case, it would be very hard to sell a Cotto-Canelo fight to the boxing public, because the fans wouldn’t be able to shake the image of Cotto getting battered and beaten by Golovkin.

There’s a negative and positive about Cotto not having faced Golovkin already. If he had, Cotto would have had the potential to make his fight against Canelo a much bigger affair if he were to beat Golovkin. But by playing it safe and not facing the Kazakhstan star, Cotto ensured that at least his fight with Canelo will be a money maker.

If Cotto beats Canelo, which is doubtful, he could then face Golovkin and get another big payday. A lot of fans have serious doubts whether Cotto will do that. Many fans think Cotto will either offer Golovkin another step aside fee to have him step aside while he fights Canelo again, or he’ll vacate the WBC 160lb title if Golovkin and/or the WBC presses the issues and tries to force him to face Golovkin.

I think it’s very likely that Golovkin won’t be getting a shot at the winner of the Cotto-Canelo fight, because I think they’re definitely going to face each other again in an immediate rematch, and possibly even face each other in three straight fights.

Unless Golovkin is patient and willing to wait for the smoke to eventually clear between Cotto and Canleo’s fights, he may have to settle for having the WBC strip the Cotto-Canelo winner of the WBC 160lb title and given to Golovkin outside of the ring. At that point, I don’t think Cotto or Canelo will ever bother fighting him.

They’ll eventually move on after they face each other 2-4 times, and fight whoever they want to in big money fights. Golovkin will have to be satisfied with beating IBF champion David Lemieux and then Tureano Johnson. There won’t be any big fights for Golovkin because there are really no big names for him to fight in the 160lb division. The only other top fighters in the middleweight division are Daniel Jacobs, Peter Quillin, and Andy Lee. Those guys aren’t going to fight Golovkin
