Amir Khan: I’ve Been Asked To Fight Mayweather

amir-khan-mayweather

I’d really like to know who asked Amir Khan to vanquish Floyd Mayweather once and for all.

Amir Khan says he wants to fight Floyd Mayweather Jnr this year, claiming that he was asked to do so by the American fighter’s manager — Leonard Ellerbe this weekend.

“I’m in a position where I could face either but I want Mayweather,” said Khan, who claimed that Leonard Ellerbe, Mayweather’s manager, had approached him after the fight against Manny Pacquiao at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on Saturday asking him to “get it on”.

Mayweather will fight one more time in September — with his father, Floyd Mayweather Sr. already proclaiming Khan, easy work.

“Amir Khan would be a good fight for him,” Mayweather Snr said. “My son would beat him. It would be easier than Pacquiao. Khan has a pretty decent jab but all the technical things, he can’t do.”
However, Khan believes that he knows where Pacquiao went wrong at the weekend and that he can beat Mayweather.

Khan like 48 others before him — believes he has the answer to the riddle.

“The mistake Manny made was to drop to Mayweather’s pace,” Khan said. “You need to stick to your own pace and that’s what a younger man could do. Mayweather is a very classy fighter but he is not the biggest puncher. He won’t hurt you. One boxer who can get to him, throw a lot of shots, and show a lot of heart, is Amir Khan.

“Financially they know it will be a big fight [with Mayweather] and it will be an exciting fight. I think Mayweather’s team want the fight.”

Keith Thurman Wants Kell Brook’s Belt; “I Got An ‘O’ And I’m Not Afraid To Let It Go”

keith-thurmanKeith “One Time” Thurman took a moment to step away from Mayweather-Pacquiao talk to discuss his own dealings within the sport. Thurman seems primed for stardom, so it isn’t a question of if he will get to fight big names, but rather which big names and when.

This time around the focus was on current IBF Welterweight Champion, Kell Brook and Thurman reiterated what he has been saying for years… anyone, anywhere.

“Man, you guys already know I wanna fight anybody and everybody man. I got an “O” and I’m not afraid to let it go. I wanna fight the champ. Kell Brook is in his prime. What’s the boy, 29 years-old?”

He continued to talk up the undefeated British champion.

“He’s a strong welterweight, a true welterweight and he understands the game. It’d be a great fight for all the English fans and for the sport of boxing in general.”

I would love to see this fight. With the old guard on their way out, the sport of boxing is in transition. After decades of reflexively saying names like Mayweather, Hopkins and Pacquiao when speaking about the best in the sport but right now we are in the middle of a generational shift within the rankings.

It’s time for the young guys to step up and begin making the fights that will allow them to separate themselves from the pack and ascend to the upper echelon that the “old guys” have already left behind, or plan on doing so in the near future. With the skills, personality and resources he has behind him, Thurman is poised to take his next step toward superstardom. All he needs now are defeats over great opponents like Kell Brook to help him get there.

Keith Thurman: I want Mayweather, I'm different than Manny Pacquiao

By Scott Christ

"I don't care if Floyd beats me. I want to fight the best. I know I'm a dangerous man. I'm different than Manny Pacquiao. I'm bigger, I have more head movement, boxing skills, all around movement than Pacquiao. I think me and Floyd Mayweather would be an excellent fight."

Keith Thurman is certainly an ambitious fighter, and while he praised Floyd Mayweather's Saturday night win over Manny Pacquiao, he also made clear that he wants to face Floyd in September, and that he still feels he's got the tools to give the pound-for-pound king a challenge.

"I told everyone I favored Floyd in this fight, and it was a beautiful match," Thurman said immediately after the fight. "Floyd is very hard hit, he is the world champion."

When asked who he thinks Mayweather (48-0, 26 KO) will fight next, Thurman (25-0, 21 KO) said, "The Money Team has to have something in mind. I'm pretty sure he's going to want to finish off his Showtime contract and still hopefully put together an exciting fight for the fans. Whom he's gonna fight, we don't know."

But when asked if he wanted the fight still, he was his usual, more colorful self.

"You know I want to fight him, baby, especially after seeing that beautiful performance, man. I told you guys, I have an 0, I'm not afraid to let it go. Floyd's beat everybody. I don't care if Floyd beats me," he said.

"At the end of the day, I want the experience. I want to fight the best in the world. I know I'm a dangerous man. I've told people, I'm different than Manny Pacquiao. I'm bigger than Manny Pacquiao. I have more head movement, boxing skills, in-and-out, all-around movement than Pacquiao. I think me and Floyd Mayweather would be an excellent fight."

Canelo-Kirkland: 35,000 Fans Expected at The Venue

By Steve Kim

Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez makes his 2015 debut this weekend versus James Kirkland at the home of the Houston Astros, Minute Maid Park. And as usual, a large throng of fans his expected to be in attendance.

"We're doing great, I think we should get 35,000," said Mike Battah, the head of Leija-Battah Promotions, who is running this event locally with Golden Boy Promotions.

They caught a bit of break with the Los Angeles Clippers beating the San Antonio Spurs in the first round of the NBA playoffs.

"The Rockets are playing this weekend, they were going to be against the Spurs but now they're going to be in Los Angeles and they're gone this weekend so I believe we're going to have a great turnout and walk-up. They're playing on Friday and Sunday against the Clippers not San Antonio, which would've hurt us because it would've been two Texas cities," said Battah, who ran the promotion a few years back when 'Canelo' drew nearly 40,000 versus Austin Trout at the Alamadome in San Antonio.

And while the weather will be warm throughout the week in Houston, there is a chance of rain. Which wont be a problem come Saturday evening. Minute Maid Park has a retractable roof.

"It was always going to be closed since day one," explained Battah. "There was no open or closed conversation. It was going to be closed."

Khan On Broner: He’s Full Of S–t, He Don’t Want It.

Amir KhanTwo of the biggest mouths in the sport have been going at each other for the past month or two. With that description, you probably already know that I am referring to junior welterweight Adrien “The Problem” Broner and welterweight Amir “King” Khan. I have included the weight classes because they will be each fighter’s excuse for not making the a fight between the two happen after so many challenges have been volleyed back and forth.

So where are we in this story? Ummmm, Broner woke up and posted a challenge to Khan on Instagram. Khan responded by issuing a challenge of his own, as he is wont to do. And then back and forth we go.

This latest bit comes from the good folks at FightHype.com and shows that Khan is not entirely convinced that Broner is interested in fighting him.

“He won’t fight me. You can see by a person’s eyes, he don’t wanna fight me. You can see it in his face, he’s making it like it’s a joke. I ain’t taking it as a joke.”

Well, I can’t argue with Khan there but instead of sticking to things that seem realistic Khan does a little bit of bullshitting of his own.

“If he wants to fight, May 29th, if he says yes to it I will not fight Algieri, I’ll fight [Broner] just to prove a point. I mean, Broner he’s just all talk.”

Well come on, Broner! What are you waiting for? That’s only 26 days away!

“He’s full of shit anyway, he don’t want it.”

I’d say there is plenty of shit coming from all angles on this one. As much as I would love to see these two in the ring, the dates and weights are not lining up. Khan has a fight with Algieri on May 29th. Broner has a fight scheduled only 3 weeks later against an as yet unnamed opponent. So don’t hold your breath for an awesome Khan-Broner showdown anytime soon.

Then there is the issue with the weights. Broner has no business moving up to welterweight again after the debacle that was Broner-Maidana. Khan is finally looking like an elite fighter since he moved up from Broner’s 140 lb. weight class. As of right now, the smartest move for both fighters would be to stay out of each other’s weight classes.

Lastly, there is that Mayweather sized elephant in the room. Mayweather-Khan is a real possibility in September. With that on the horizon, Khan has no reason to go chasing Broner anywhere at all.

So in the end what do we have here? We have two guys that are very good at promoting themselves by attaching themselves to others. Khan challenges everyone not names Klitschko. Broner calls Mayweather his big brother and makes challenges of his own… it was inevitable that both men’s shtick would cross paths. It’s a shame that’s all any of this is though. These guys could both use a win over the other to catapult their career forward, and I would love to see them fight but there is no reason to expect it anytime soon. I’m sure there will be a retort from Khan within the next few days. Until then…

Atlas Rips Pacquiao, Roach For Boasts, Fight Approach

ESPN expert analyst and former trainer Teddy Atlas was disappointed with Manny Pacquiao's performance in last Saturday's twelve round decision loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Afterwards Pacquiao stated that he had an injury to his right shoulder. His trainer Freddie Roach revealed that Pacquiao first injured himself in early April. Pacquiao further claims to have aggravated the injury in the third or fourth round and surgery is now scheduled.

Atlas questions Pacquiao's mindset and the daily fight predictions that were being made by him and Roach - where both men were predicting dominating wins and explosive knockouts.

"When him and Freddie are making these proclamations and saying that they are going to win in these dominant fashions, and his trainer says that he's going to knock him out. You shouldn't be making those statements if you know that you have an injured fighter. And I think I'm fair to say that. I think I'm on fair ground," Atlas told XM Radio.

"If I was a lawyer and I'm not because I didn't go to law school, I would say that exhibit A. - he didn't have the urgency for a guy who was looking to win this type of fight in this type of way. They were taking selfies as they were going down the hallway to the ring and that's just not appropriate. You are going into a ring where you can really get injured, where you can really leave with less of yourself, you have to have certain kind of mindset to go on that arena."

"You have to have a gladiators type of approach - and they are taking selfies as they are walking in? Something is wrong with that kind of picture. I feel that at the end of the day you overcome certain things. If he did have an injured right shoulder, it sure didn't look like it in the fourth round when he was letting the punches go."

Pacquiao Now Named in Five Lawsuits Over Injury

Manny Pacquiao has been sued in several U.S. courts by people who said they paid to watch him fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. in the "Fight of Century" but felt defrauded by Pacquiao's failure to disclose a shoulder injury.

At least five lawsuits were filed against Pacquiao on Tuesday in federal courts in California, Illinois, Nevada and Texas. The lawsuits seek compensation under laws meant to protect consumers and ask for status as class actions on behalf of ticket buyers, pay-per-view television viewers and people who gambled on the fight.

"The lawsuits are factually wrong and legally wrong, and we expect they will be dismissed in due course," Daniel Petrocelli, an attorney for Pacquiao and Top Rank Inc, who promote Pacquiao and were also sued, said in a statement on Wednesday.

One of the lawsuits also named as defendants Mayweather, Mayweather's promotions company, and several businesses involved in broadcasting and promoting the fight: Time Warner unit Home Box Office Inc, CBS Corp unit Showtime Networks Inc, AT&T Inc, Comcast Corp and DirecTV.

Spokespeople for Mayweather and the companies did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Wednesday.

Pacquiao, a native of the Philippines, lost a unanimous decision to Mayweather in a heavily hyped welterweight showdown in Las Vegas on Saturday that was expected to be the top grossing prize fight of all time.

Barely one hour after the contest ended, Pacquiao's promoter, Bob Arum, said the 36-year-old southpaw had been hampered by an 'old' injury to his right shoulder.

Neither Pacquiao nor his team appeared to have informed the Nevada Athletic Commission about the shoulder issue until a couple of hours before the start of the fight when they asked for an anti-inflammatory injection.

When Pacquiao's team filled out its pre-fight medical questionnaire on Friday, a query about any shoulder injury was marked "No" before the form was signed by Pacquiao and his adviser.

According to media reports, Pacquiao was due to undergo surgery this week for a torn rotator cuff.

Golden Boy Files Official Lawsuit Against Al Haymon

LOS ANGELES (May 6)—Golden Boy Promotions today filed a $300 million lawsuit against Al Haymon and his related companies and Waddell & Reed Financial, Inc. and its related hedge funds, alleging their repeated violation of the antitrust laws and the Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act. The case—which was reported by BoxingScene.com on May 1—was filed in Federal Court in Los Angeles.

Since the moment Al Haymon launched Premier Boxing Champions, he has repeatedly and brazenly broken the letter and spirit of the Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act that is meant to protect fighters from exploitation. As part of an anti-competitive conspiracy that includes financial backers from Waddell & Reed, Haymon has "entered into agreements to restrain trade in a substantial portion of the market for promotion of Championship-Caliber Boxers," the bombshell new lawsuit claims.

"During my 25 years in boxing, I have watched far too many fighters be chewed up, spit out and left with nothing to sit idly by while Mr. Haymon flaunts a federal law meant to protect those who put everything on the line to entertain fans of our sport," said Oscar De La Hoya, Founder and President of Golden Boy Promotions. "The Muhammad Ali Act was passed to help fighters avoid the fate that bedeviled so many of our predecessors; and I will do everything in my power to ensure this crucial piece of legislation is upheld and followed."

The lawsuit alleges numerous violations of the Ali Act and antitrust statutes by Haymon, among the most glaring of which is that he routinely serves as both manager of his fighters and promoter of their fights, even though such a dual role is explicitly prohibited by the Ali Act in order to "protect boxers, the boxing industry, and the public from abusive, exploitive, and anticompetitive behavior."

According to the lawsuit: "By ignoring the 'firewall' established by the Ali Act, the Haymon Defendants are essentially sitting on both sides of the bargaining table. While purporting to act in their clients' best interests, the Haymon Defendants have obtained direct and indirect financial interests in promoting their boxers - thereby creating the very conflict of interest the Ali Act sought to remedy."

Haymon calls himself a "manager" or an "advisor," yet Haymon and his myriad of companies are well known to arrange and contract for the bouts, the arenas, the sponsors and the television time - all duties of a boxing promoter. Even Haymon-managed fighters themselves repeatedly refer to Haymon as their "promoter," though he is well-known to manage more than 100 fighters.

Haymon is, not only pushing out other legitimate promoters in favor of ineffective puppets that he controls, but locking out top fighters who dare to not join his stable of boxers.

"At the age of 50 and after spending most of my adult life in boxing, I thought I'd seen every trick in the book aimed at undermining those who actually step into the ring," said former middleweight and light heavyweight world champion Bernard Hopkins. "Having personally been refused a lucrative fight with a Haymon-managed fighter, I have felt first-hand the impact of Haymon's attempt to form a monopoly. These practices are detrimental to boxers, fans and the sport as a whole," added Hopkins, a co-owner of Golden Boy Promotions.

The complaint alleges that Waddell & Reed and related companies aided and abetted Haymon in his commission of the claimed violations of law.

The Golden Boy Suit comes days after the Association of Boxing Commissions called on newly confirmed U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch to investigate Haymon for many of the same infractions spelled out in today's lawsuit.

As part of the lawsuit, Golden Boy is seeking damages of $300 million.

A copy of the lawsuit is available upon request.

Floyd Mayweather Sends Message: Excuses Are For Losers

Floyd Mayweather Jr. offered a critical response Tuesday night to Manny Pacquiao’s mounting complaints about how his injured shoulder affected his performance in their 12-round welterweight title fight Saturday night.

Mayweather posted a picture of himself on his Instagram account late Tuesday night, along with a message. It read: 19 years in the fight game and I’ve had one excuse: “Don’t have an excuse.” Winners win and losers have excuses.

When Pacquiao first revealed the injury in the immediate aftermath of Mayweather’s win Saturday night at MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Mayweather matter-of-factly said during the post-fight press conference that he would’ve handled it differently had he suffered an injury and lost to Pacquiao (57-6-2, 38 KOs).

“I have injuries, also, going into this fight,” Mayweather said Saturday night. “If he would’ve won, I would’ve got up here and the only thing I would’ve said was, ‘I’ve got to show respect and just say he was the better man,’ if he beat me. Both of my arms were injured, both of my hands are injured. But like I said before, I will always find a way to win.”

Since Saturday night, though, Pacquiao and his handlers have gone out of their way to emphasize the role a tear to Pacquiao’s right rotator cuff played in his performance against Mayweather (48-0, 26 KOs), who won by large margins on all three scorecards (118-110, 116-112, 116-112). Dr. Neal ElAttrache – a noted Los Angeles-based surgeon who has performed procedures on the shoulders of Lakers star Kobe Bryant, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, former heavyweight champ Vitali Klitschko and ex-welterweight champ Andre Berto – said Monday that Pacquiao would require surgery to repair the tear and that it could cause a break between bouts that could last as long as a year.

Frustrated fight fans, casual consumers and Nevada State Athletic Commission officials have condemned Pacquiao for failing to disclose the supposed seriousness of the injury before the fight. Some critics have gone as far as to accuse Pacquiao of fraud for fighting while he was as injured as the Filipino superstar claims to have been before the fight.

Amir Mansour Discusses Deontay Wilder, Klitschko, More

Amir Mansour (21-1, 16 KOs) thrilled fans back in November with his superb knockout punch to vanquish Fred Kassi, a shot that many observers considered to be the knockout of the year for 2014. The Delaware native has had to wait for a ring return, but on May 8 he faces Joey Dawejko (14-3-2, 7 KOs) in Philadelphia with an eye at a world title shot later in the year, should he continue to win. Mansour spoke to BoxingScene ahead of the bout and also touched on the current heavyweight scene and its champions, Wladimir Klitschko and Deontay Wilder.

BoxingScene: You must be anxious to get back in the ring after such an impressive knockout last time?

Amir Mansour: For sure. It's my job, it's the life that I chose so I'm always excited. The more you fight, the more you get noticed. The more you win, the more you get recognised. It's a job too, it's a pay check. As any working person knows, the more you get paid the better off you live. We've all got families to take care of, that comes into it as well.

BoxingScene: How do you feel physically?

Amir Mansour: You're going to see a totally different fighter, I'm in twice as good shape as last time. One thing about me, each fight I get better and better. I'm a student of the game, I'm always eager to learn more and more and spar better. These guys talk about my age, let's see who's faster and more fit. I will challenge everybody, I am the fastest heavyweight in the top five on the planet. My speed is right there, I challenge anybody to prove me wrong. We have to fight each other, all the top guys over the world but as soon as guys get to the top ten they want to fight guys below that. It's ridiculous.

BoxingScene: Did you want to fight sooner because there has been a fairly big gap between now and your last fight?

Amir Mansour: Yes I did, honestly, I'm old school. I would like to fight every month if possible. They have so many regulations it's just ridiculous. Back in the day those guys fought 12 round championship fights twice a month! Ray Robinson fought 15 round fights twice a month, for years. I wish I could fight more often but at the level I'm at I can't go fighting in bar rooms, I've got to fight as big a fight as I can possibly get.

BoxingScene: How much do you know about your opponent?

Amir Mansour: Anybody that punches like he punches, you don't want to get caught with that. Same with me, nobody wants to get caught with one of my punches. That goes with anybody. My mother hits hard, I don't want to get caught with one of her punches! This guy's physique is deceptive. He looks chubby but he's not slow at all. He has skills. I believe though that I have the best arsenal out there.

BoxingScene: How pleasing was it to get the knock out of the year in many people's opinion?

Amir Mansour: Very pleasing, I've had lots of great knockouts that were newsworthy but finally someone looks at one of my knockouts and says it should be recognized as one of the best knockouts of the year. It also got people to be interested in some of my other knockouts as well.

BoxingScene: Do you want to get a shot at someone like Deontay Wilder?

Amir Mansour: You know, we're living in an era where the top ten constantly duck the top ten. Usually when a guy challenged for the heavyweight championship of the world, we knew who he was. Do you know who Klitschko's last few opponents were? They hadn't been mixing it with the top ten. Bryant Jennings, give him his due, he came off a nice win over Mike Pérez, so that was two quality fighters and the winner got a shot at Klitschko. But normally these top guys are ducking each other. I'm fighting someone who is not even in the top 20. He's a good fighter, don’t get me wrong, he's not someone I'm sleeping on and a guy like him always has a puncher's chance. But at the end of the day we should all be fighting top ten guys, but you call them up to fight Amir Mansour and they say, 'I'm not fighting him'. Because they all want to do what Deontay Wilder did - fight a bunch of bums and then get a title shot against a guy that is tailor made for him.

You've got that belt now, you 're going to have to start fighting quality opponents. But you know what? He might get away with it like Klitschko's been doing for the past five years. Picking and choosing to fight guys who don't have a shot to beat you. But as the American champion, you're not going to be able to get away with what you do in Europe, fighting bum after bum after bum. Don't get me wrong, I have full respect for Klitschko. He came up in that era and outlasted a lot of opponents, a lot of the guys he came up with, he's still champion of the world. The American people won't watch their champion fighting bums, they want guys who can beat him. I also don't want to take anything away from Deontay, he did exactly what he said he was going to do in that ring, whooped his ass. I was proud of that kid. Deontay is another fighter getting better and better and three or four years nobody will be able to touch him because he's still learning.

ADRIEN BRONER VS. SHAWN PORTER ON TAP FOR JUNE 20 PBC CARD
By Ben Thompson | May 06, 2015
ADRIEN BRONER VS. SHAWN PORTER ON TAP FOR JUNE 20 PBC CARD

Sources close to the situation have confirmed that a June 20 clash between three-division former world champion Adrien Broner and former welterweight champion Shawn Porter is nearly finalized. It's unclear if the bout will take place at the welterweight limit of 147 pounds, as there are conflicting reports that the fighters may have agreed to a 144-pound catchweight, but nevertheless, we're told that the fight is definitely a go.

Broner is coming off of a dominant unanimous decision victory over John Molina this past March. It was his third fight as a 140-pounder since moving back down in weight after losing his 147-pound title to Marcos Maidana. Porter is also coming off of a victory this past March, scoring a 5th round knockout of late replacement Erick Bone. Although details are still being worked out, our understanding is that the June 20 PBC card will likely take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, though a battle between the Ohio natives might be better suited for Broner's hometown of Cincinnati.
