DiBella Signs Kermit Cintron, Shaun George; Allan Green Next?
By Jake Donovan
There are two new additions to the DiBella Entertainment stable, with a possible third one on the way. Boxingscene.com’ Editor-in-Chief Rick Reeno received that former welterweight titlist Kermit Cintron and current light heavyweight contender Shaun George have signed with the New York-based promotional company.
The breaking news was confirmed by promoter Lou DiBella prior to his club show Wednesday evening at BB King Blues Club in New York City.
Cintron (29-2, 27KO) hasn’t fought since his disappointing 6th round knockout loss in his rematch with Antonio Margarito earlier this year. The loss ended a five-fight win streak and 18 month reign as welterweight titlist, separating with promoter Main Events shortly thereafter.
Much of his downtime has been spent rehabbing an old injury, suffered in his thrilling 10th round stoppage of Jesse Feliciano in November 2007. No word on the exact date of his official debut under the DBE banner.
While Cintron rebuilds, the stock for Shaun George (17-2-2, 8KO) has never been higher.
The Brooklyn native is currently sitting on a four-fight win streak, including the biggest win of his career in his last fight, a nine-round domination and eventual knockout of former heavyweight titlist Chris Byrd on ESPN2 this past May.
Promoter Lou DiBella also informed Boxingscene.com that he is close to signing middleweight contender Allan Green. Boxingscene.com staff writer Amy Green first caught wind of the news earlier Wednesday afternoon about the possibility of a buyout being arranged between DiBella and Green’s current promoter, Tony Holden.
A dollar amount was mentioned, but is being withheld from the report until the deal is official.
Green informed Boxingscene.com last month of his intentions to eventually split from Holden, with whom he’s admittedly had an on-again, off-again relationship. Troubles in paradise began earlier this year, when Green was a no-show for a scheduled ESPN2 Friday Night Fights appearance, only for rumors to surface that he was signing with another promoter.
That never happened, but neither has another fight for Green in 2008 beyond his 10 round decision over Rubin Williams in early January. There were hopes of challenging for the linear middleweight crown later this year, but plans fell apart at the negotiating table, though various forms of the truth have surfaced.
What was confirmed from the negotiations gone awry was that Green would no longer fight under the Holden Promotions banner. How soon he will be able to fight for DiBella Entertainment remains to be seen, with DiBella only confirming that a deal is in the works and is close to being finalized
