It's pretty easy, send a request to other users, chat away. Doesn't matter the carrier or where in the world they are as long as they're in coverage of course and with a blackberry. Me and my folks from work stay on blackberry messenger, great way of communication.

i only fuck w/ a PHONE PLAN (minutes), and maybe a text plan......a data plan deals with internet type of capability...

For AT&T you can use it as a phone only (voice + text), but if you want to send MMS (pictures/video via messages) or browse the internet/email you need a data plan....
