Found a lil site about the man from a buddy of mine:

Big L was fatally shot in the chest and face on February 15th, 1999. He was walking down his block of 139 when he was shot. The reasons behind the shooting was said to have to do with a beef that L’s brother, dubbed Big Lee, had with the gunman. Big Lee at the time was in jail and therefore was not accessible by the gunman, so he decided to settle it by taking out Big L. Big L was instantly killed with the gunshots to the face and chest. He was just 24 at the time of his death.

what I've heard of Big L iz pretty fucking dope too bad he died cuz I would luv too hear some more of his tracks I was really diggin Big L feat. 2pac that joint right there iz tha sickest track I've heard pac on for a minute that album right there was Big L last one right or does he have anotther one out can I get tha 412 or whats up.

he's spose to be releasin an after death album, i only seen the ad, but this was like a year ago, and jeah i was misinformed about his death i guess, but either way he still died and it's fucked up, the rap game could've used a guy like big l, it's an unfortunate loss

Big L is one of the dopest MC's ever. His life was taken way to quick and before he was able to release most of his material. IMO not only could he make songs that can make you think and/or chill to, but he is IMO one of the best freestyle mc's ever. Much love to Big L...........RIP.........
