I think that the problem begins with so many people believing they can actually rap. Digital recording software has made it easy for everyone to either have their own studio, or have a friend that has one. Then theres limewire. Get all the beats you can dream of, and you dont have to spend a dime. Some of these folks need a shitload of features cause half times they can barely write a full 16 themself. So with that said, Im not mad at the mixtapes, especially for tha new cats. I actually like the ones that real djs put out more than ones that artists put out themselves. I just wish that more of the seasoned vets would rely less on them.

just look at mess...he used to come out with slappin ass solos. turf politics, bandannas tats and tongue rings, disobayish, now its all these comps and mixdiscs
that's real. he's put so much shit out this year it's ridiculous. mess is tight and all that but who can really buy all that shit especially when you're comin out wit something every second. i may be tryna soak in one of his albums or projects and then he got 3 other albums about to drop or come out. i like when artist come out and then disappear for a while like it use to be. not stayin in your face all the time.

I think the problem is that artists are trying to make a quick dollar rather than make quality music. Mixtapes and half ass cds with recycled songs cheaper to make and take less time/effort. Sucks for the fans....

With Messy Marv for example...if he takes the 15 best songs he puts out in a year and puts them on one album...I would buy it. I'm not gonna buy the albums he's been putting out lately with maybe 1/4 of the songs being good.

^^^that's true. i wonder how his record sales are. i wonder if his sales are either all the same as puttin out one album or if people are really buyin all his different cd's out there makin him gain more sales than off one.

and it would be a classic album as in the good ol' days, because there are really good tracks on those albums, just one or two on each though

some of them dont drop a lotta solos cuz of shit that goes on in there personal lives (Dubee) and shit maybe they have other lucrative ways of hustle...and they just use a rap career to launder the dirty cash to clean cash...like my nigga AP NINA SAYS: I GOT A 6 CAR GARAGE AND THIS IS NOT FROM RAPPIN

And that's respectable. But don't put out a bunch of bullshit mixtapes, group albums or compilations every other week. People get tired of you very fast that way. That's what happened to Messy Marv with me. For established artists, I don't see the point in putting out a mixtape, just take your time and put together some quality tracks for a album. For up and comers, mixtapes are a good promotion tool, but don't rely on them to make thousands of dollars, nor don't try to sell them for $15 a piece.

As far as solo albums go, that term is damn near dead. I haven't seen more than 10 REAL solo albums released this year (independent or major releases), and I work in a record store. Hopefully some of these artists realize that they will eventually lose a lot of sales due to the fact that there are people out there that don't want to heard 3 different people and the main artists on every song.
