WHATS YOUR VIEWS ON BAPTISING INPHANTS OR YOUNG CHILDREN? SHOULD IT BE DONE? WHY???

I DONT THINK ANYONE SHOULD BE BROUGHT INTO A RELIGION OR ANY TYPE OPH PRACTICE UNTIL THEY ARE OLD ENOUGH AND WISE ENOUGH TO MAKE THAT DECISION PHOR THEMSELVES. I DONT THINK BELIEPHS SHOULD BE PHORCED ONTO A CHILD EITHER. HOW COULD YOU TELL A CHILD "HERE, THIS IS WHAT YOU BELIEVE, PHOLLOW IT..."?

IM ASKIN CAUSE MY SISTER RECENTLY ASKED ME TO BE MY NEPHEWS GODPHATHER, AND APHTER SOME SOUL SEARCHING, I CAME TO THE DECISION THAT I DONT WANT ANY PART IN BRINGING A CHILD INTO A RELIGIOUS PRACTICE WITHOUT THEM BEING AWARE OPH WHAT THEYRE GETTING INTO...

YOUR THOUGHTS???

I couldn't agree w/ U more. I was baptised at like 2 months old into the catholic religion. Even though my parents were not really active participants in the religion. My dad says it was more of a cultural thing than a religion thing. That was as far as I went w/ the catholic religion. However I still wear my medallion that my godmother gave me (never take it off).

When ever I see my godmother she is like my second mom and tries to keep me on the right road. Even though I don't follow the religion I appreciate that my parents picked someone who cared enough about me to help in my life. Perhaps the religion part is only a small part of the role, while being a nother parental figure is more important. My Godmother isn't pushing Catholicism down my throat, in fact it has never come up. My 4 cents.

From my perspective - & I am a father of five "seeds" - I see it as my responsibility to educate my offspring with what I accept as true until they get to an age in which they are competent enough to make the independent CHOICE to be baptized. If what I am teaching them is considered "The Truth" then I shouldn't feel the need in forcing a religion on them should I? I have the confidence that if I nurture them with the correct understanding of what it is we are teaching, then they will in fact choose baptism that goes along with what my wife & I would hope for. My sanguinity lies with the thinking that they will do it because THEY see it as “The Truth” as well…not because we MADE them.

Wow…that was a bit more long-winded then I cared for.

no disrespect to u kitten , but i think most people who go church only think about him and try to learn about god only do it once a week , they do it when its good for them , and when they leave church they dont think about god , they dont think about there sins until sunday , they think one day a week will get them to heaven , becuz most of them are afraid of death , most of them are scared of hell .

why put god aside til sunday ? you wonldnt be here with out him

how does being babtised protect you from "the devil" when religious folk create "sins" all the time?
EVERYONE creates sin. It has been that way since our original parents sinned at the beginning of time & listened to the serpent. That still doesn't excuse one from striving to do right in the eyes of the "Grand Creator".

Only YOU as an INDIVIDUAL (or Individuoh in my case) can protect him or herself from Satan bro. You ever hear of the old wore out saying: "Think before you speak?"...a little application of that wouldn't hurt folkizm.

I see what your saying, but their is this misconception that if you do everything your religion says, you gonna be good and perfect. if you get babtised you are better off then not being babtised, if you go to church, your a better person then someone who does not, if you don't have sex and become a preist, you are at the top of the line of all goodness, if your a priest, you molest lil boys..... OH WHOOPS, what happend to taking all the rights steps? how does everything up to being a priest make you morally superior to those who do not take one of those steps, when they commit crimes far haneous then anything I will commit in my lifetime. what I'm saying, if you religiously get to the top of the line, you are still no better then the average person....

BAPTISM OF CHILDREN IS ACTUALLY A WASTE OF TIME. THE ACT OF BAPTISM IS *SYMBOLIC* AND SHOULD ONLY BE DONE WHEN ONE IS FULLY AWARE OF THE CHOICE THEY ARE MAKING.....IF THAT DOESNT HAPPEN IT ISNT "SINCERE".......LOOKS MORE AND MORE LIKE "TRADITION"........

:h:
Wise words comrade. It's more of a public showing that you are dedicating your life to God. The real "commitment" is really made in one's heart & mind. It is also between that individuoh & God (not the general population).

Could someone explain to me what baptizing is. What does baptizing mean. and don't give me no cornyass answer like "baptizing is a traditional christian belief. Jesus did it and we try to be like him. Even tho he didn't even get "baptized" till He was 30. And even tho the Bible says Jesus don't even baptize poeple with water but with a Holy Fire."

Can someone define the word Baptizm please? What is it specifically supposed to do? How did the ritual come about to be?

Cuz to me I see baptizm only as a form of symbolism. Kinda like the crosses I wear around my neck. They serve as a reminder to me when I forget or question why I'm fighting.

I think of it this way satan uses symbolism to make us forget things or lead us to believe in other things. When we see nothing but money rules everywhere we look, we might start to believe that cuz as far as we know money must rule everything cuz the people that rule "my" life are rolling in money.

Jesus uses the same "live by the sword" tactics. A cross, baptizm, a heart, a dove, angels, superheroes, reapers, a smile, a helping hand, a protective hand, etc. All originally things associated as being free and stuff that money couldn't by you.

The devil started to take the "free" things and associate them with money. In turn Jesus took the "money" things and started to associate them with being free. Over time things got so complicated that it took "Faith" to distinguish the two. Either you gon have faith in your money and contuinue to use it as a fighting tactic or you gonna have faith in God and change the world.

Strip a man of everything and you can see who he really is. Strip Jesus of everything by doing this to Him. You faithless bastards.

I'm mormon, and this is how we do it. When a child is born, we bless the child... basically, take them to service on sunday, and pray that the lord will protect the child, she/he'll be healthy, etc. etc.

Then, we take the child with us to church every week, and have sunday school classes, etc. that they attend grouped by age. The child is taught about Jesus Christ, the importance and meaning of baptism, sin, etc.

Kids are baptised shortly after their 8th birthday... before that age, sin is impossible. So we don't believe in original sin, or any of that. How the age of 8 came about i'm not sure, but that's the deal. I think it works good, because the child isn't so young that they can't comprehend what's going on, and they're not so old that they have to wait for the priviledge of being baptised.

The question about what does baptism mean is really complicated. You can take it a ton of different ways... first, of course, Jesus was baptised, and taught baptism while on earth, so baptism should be performed in the way shown by his example (full immersion, for instance). At baptism, you are making certain covenants with the lord, and taking on the name of Jesus Christ. You are symbolically drowning, and being reborn. You are symbolically washing away old sins, and emerging clean. Tons of stuff there, you could talk about it for days.
