Food for thought:
After listening to the A'z single, which is basically Bay music in the Snap format, and Clyde Carson's single, which is Bay music in the 50 Cent format, I think these labels & A&R's are having them cater to formulas that are already proven to work in the mainstream rather than pushing a uniquely Bay sound. And ultimately, because The Bay isn't pushing our own sound I think that hurts us as a whole.

"Yo sun, lets keep the Bay the Bay and let The South and The East do them. Word up B, this is the New New Bay right here sun." lol

PS Shout out to Fabby for keepin it Bayish on his 1st single

The bottom line is Hyphy music went from its own genre to imitating whatever is out and is hot. Once upon a time hyphy was its own genre but now there is NOTHING that seperates hyphy music from crunk down south and mainstream east coast music. It doesnt help that the top rappers in the hyphy music define it as "yea its the same as crunk but West Coast." To tell the truth I see 25 year old men in 5XXXXXXL tee shirts and oversized stunna shades and it is clear they are either from Foster City or have never gotten their asses kicked in their lives. Hyphy will never make the Bay blow because too many rappers want to be Mac Dre. I listen to Bay Area music all day but I am sick and tired of Hyphy and everything it stands for.

Bay Area music was bred on ingenuity and creativity. There are artists like Keak, FAB, Quinn, Zion I, Nickatina and Equipto and others who carry that torch, and there are people out trying to make a quick buck with a mainstream inspired beat who have no talent that are really making the Bay Area look like a fuckin joke right now. Time to shut the doors and let the folks makin good music get big and leave the 45 homies from the turf who cant rap and stand on stage and ruin the live show back in the hood. My two cents.

Yea, step you're life up. You expect your favorite rapper X to be something big because he represents your hometown and he has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to offer to the game except a replicated beat and some C grade lyrics. Not going to happen.

Originality is what defines our style. That is whats lacking in the game, and thats why youre favorite artist with the record deal cant even sell 10K.

And to clarify Chinese Mike's original question, this has NOTHING to do with A&Rs it has to do with Bay Artists not willing to take a risk and do something different.

What is the "real Bay" style? Talking about pills, scrappers and dreads? ALOT of people in the Bay don't do that shit and even more so ALOT of people think the hyphy portion of the Bay Area music scence is trashy music with a bunch of people saying the same shit in different ways. I personally think Clyde never did the whole Bay beats and rymes thing. He represented the Bay in his own way...so does Quinn, Ya Boy, The Frontline, E-A-Ski production, Hood Stars and Big Rich. They all represent the Bay, but in their own way. I'm actually sick of niggas frontin like they are "pushin the Bay sound" when in actuality they are just mimmicking eachother making the same fucking scrapper, ghostride, hyphy, I Go, Thizz Face music as 80% of the new cats saying they rap from the Bay. In truth...that is the bullshit that is keeping the bay down.

How many Dr Dres are there in the bay that are willing (or have the ability) to help an artist perfect his music?

Pretty much.

It don't matter to these folks though. It's not like they actually PURCHASE the music that would keep their favorite artists going...

why do you all talk about things you have no control over, and no ability to change?

do you think a&rs read this board. do you think anybody in the industry reads this board and listens to you guys?

plain and simple...hyphy didnt sell. E40 sold, but noone else has. the music BUSINESS is about making money, not about "keeping it real" or "respect the bay". its about money. so they are gonna push whatever will SELL RIGHT NOW, not break open a new genre of music.

if artists are so in it to break their music scene open, then why dont they do free tours and give out free cds and make their music available on the web? that will break the "bay" scene open to the world.

first of all, theres been no artist with major backing after 40. no indy artist is gonna do 40's #s. he had big time promo and big time publicists, your fav. bay rapper cant do that on his $10k budget.

2nd, copying whats hot isn't going to create longevity or real fans. When E-40 first broke, his music at the time was very unique (and still is). I dont understand why you can't keep it true and make money at the same time.

go ask your favorite rapper when you see him in the streets

why anyone would want to listen to someone who's music is created as a hustle rather than an artform is beyond me.
So when artists refer to the "rap game" what do you think they're talking about?

Well Hyphy has not really had a chance to sell...The only time I hear B.A music is in the Bay....However I hear Akon(wherever he's from) every place I go...You can't say that if B.A music was heard like this other stuff it would not blow..

the bay definitely has its own sound, not to be confused with subject matter. just like mia, houston, atl, ny, no, la etc all have their own sound. vato by snoop dogg is hella LA, so is west coast by game, snoop and xzibit. anything by primo and pete rock is ny shit. Memphis shit has its own sound. dig?
