I'm Portia - a Publicist.
Thanks for the referral on the thread Frank.
I can only speak for myself in regards to what I do as a Publicist.
My job is to create the "buzz" in the Industry for an artist, and to keep them in the spotlight by generating constistent attention thru National and International Exposure -
Including Print (Magazines/Newspapers), Internet, Radio, and TV.
I work closely with my clients to get the artists input for publicity based campaigns, as well as provide a target marketing/publicity strategy for upcoming projects.
We as Publicists, keep the media in the loop about our artists.
Besides being the Media contatct for my clients, I do Biographies, Press Releases, Media Advisories, Schedule Interviews, Newsletters, Magazine/E-Zine placement, Review requests, Media Press Kits, Bulletins, and anything else Media related that my clients need.
Writing is a major key factor in my job.. The press releases, biographies, media advisories, and newsletters have to grab the Media's attention to want to continue to hear and learn more about the artist and their projects. Everything that goes out, I write!
Some artists feel they don't need a Publicist so their Manager may take on the responsibility of connecting with the Media.
But, I believe that the Manager should only be focused on the artist, the projects, the show bookings, etc. The Media is definitely a job of it's own.
It irritates me when someone wants a Publicist, and they don't even have a Manager.
If you don't have any shows, projects, or at least a single circulating - a Publicist is the last thing you need.
There needs to be some kind of buzz already, whether it be in the streets or Nationally for me to pull the Media in regarding an artist.
