Pro Bowl linebacker Shawne Merriman will forgo knee surgery and play this season for the San Diego Chargers despite the fact he has two torn ligaments in his left knee.

"I'm going to play," Merriman texted the San Diego Union-Tribune. "I'll deal with it when it's time to get surgery."

Merriman said Saturday that he has been told by doctors that he could suffer a possible career-ending injury if he attempts to play without having surgery.

Merriman said he has tears in both the posterior cruciate and lateral collateral ligaments. He said doctors agree that he needs surgery to repair the damage.

The Chargers open the regular season Sept. 7 against the Carolina Panthers.

Merriman has made the Pro Bowl in each of his three NFL seasons. He has 39½ sacks in that span, more than any other NFL player.

What the fuck are all you crying about, the team doctors cleared him to play. It's his knee, he can get as many expert opinions as he wants to pay for. He chose to play the season to get that Superbowl ring, I can respect that. Chargers are winning the conference and getting to the big game no matter what.

You gotta respect him though. He's putting his career on the line. If I was playing against him, I would run the ball right at him to see if his knee will hold up.

he's a dumb ass... but at the same time I can see why he wants to play

everyone is talkin bout how San Diego could win the Super Bowl this year... and he doesn't wanna miss out on being a part of that... but overall it's still a dumb ass decision

i dont think it was the tough of a decision actually. He played with the same injury for the last 6 games of the season. plus imo there was some exaggeration in the whole story...i never saw a doctor actually come out and say it was career threating, now merriman is saying that same thing, its not career threating....but we shall see, for sure he aint gonna be 100% im thinking he lasts 4-6 weeks before he shuts it down
