xtra sports 690/1150 moved to l.a. about a year and half ago...i heard that they are giving up on the san diego market all together, and 690 will now be an oldies station. fuck it all i know is i liked 98.9 its a shame that they changed but i see what you are saying as far as surviving. its kind of like an underground rapper "selling out" and going maintstream/pop in order to gain an audience and make money

the problem is that people don't understand who rhythmic radio is really for. it's not programmed toward men. it's programmed for women. we are consumers...more susceptible to advertising messages...we make more money and buy more things than the average 18-34 male in the demographic. therefore women are the target audience. it's obvious by the demographic of this web site alone, that this type of "underground gangster rap" is not geared toward women. why then would a radio station who is playing toward women program this type of music? it's suicide.

the 98.9 staff from what i heard....many of them were unhappy...and some left for z90...and certain members of the staff were threatening to do bodily harm to them, etc. because they were leaving More FM for Z. I left Z for my own reasons and am much happier now.
EVEN SOME MORNING SHOW DJS FROM MAGIC 92.5 http://www.magic925.com/main.html LEFT FOR Z90 RECENTLY, LIKE DALANA FROM THE "GREG AND DALANA" SHOW.

i understand that radio has given up on the male demographic my only question , "why ?" TV drools over the male 18-34 demos, why doesnt radio ? you would know way more about this than I Seargeant so lace me up. and if everybody is saying that More wasnt playing THAT much local/underground then whats the reason to flip over i mean if it was 90 percent normal rhythmic radio is that 10% gonna make that big a difference anyway...if the females werent listening before because they happened to hear a non R&B hip hop song once an hour why would they all of a sudden start listening now

i guess im not understanding what was actually going on the air...sounds like they were a normal rhythmic station that would mix in a local artist every so often in place of say an old school joint...and from the looks of there numbers the main listeners were more than likely the people waiting to hear the local artists so now it would seem to reason that they are gonna have next to no ratings because theres no reason to go after the demo that Z90 and i take it 93.3(ive never heard this station before) already have locked down

Male 18-34 demos are huge. But only if you are a rock format.

As for the programming...it makes perfect sense to go straight at Z90...that's the only way to win. Local artists being played was not the reason why that version of More FM failed. It also has to do with bad programming altogether. They would play 4 new records in a row. That's bad programming. They would play four old records in a row. That is also bad programming. The reason the bosses are called Program Directors is because they literally have to pick the hottest records and run them every hour and a half plus know which older and newer joints to throw in and where. Radio for ratings is a science. More FM had zero rhyme or reason to the programming and that's why it sucked. Watch this new format...I guarantee with their new PD and staff you'll see them really give Z a run for their money...

thanks...im a marketer myself but i dont know shit about the radio business obviously...and honestly i almost never caught the station just because im out of the habit to listening to music on the radio(i only listen to Howard Stern)

so from what i gather the black and hispanic young male demo is not at all sought after because we are all broke or in jail *rolls eyes at advertisers*

sounds like this station was more unorganized than anything else...as you can tell im happily out of touch with "whats hot" when it comes to what used to be "our" music(i understand the economics behind it but the fact that females have become the only important listeners in music, (rock stations arent exactly blowing people away either) makes me nauseous)...im starting to think that good music is all but doomed and i dont care what kinda music you like...when the corps get together with the labels and decide that only young minority women matter with urban music and only soccer moms and there daughters matter with top40 and or country and stop putting money into any other possible audience(the white guys shock jock radio but thats not actual music either) we are all in serious trouble

Sarge i know you are within the industry and see it purely from an economical standpoint but do you see how infinitely destructive this is for good music?

"Good music" has always been neglected in one way or another on mainstream radio (what is good music to you may not be good music to someone else--we're talking mass appeal here...). Hip hop has always been neglected. Hip pop has not. It just so happens that Hip pop works as a great radio format and is really hot right now. Where will it be in 5 years? Who knows. Gotta get that cheese now...remember when Jazz was the SHIT?! Nope. Cuz we were in our father's daddy bags then. It's all cyclical.

It's too bad the station had to go out like that and change the format. They went from being unique and supporting underground artists to being the same old shit as the other two stations. They lost a listener here and I'm sure a lot of other people are no longer going to tune in since the reasons for certain personalities no longer being at the station and the change in the variety of the music are brought to light.
