Yelena Bulchenko and two others were stabbed to death on Saturday in an overnight rampage. The suspect is 23-year-old Maksim Gelman, who is the ex-boyfriend of Bulchenko. The two other victims were Gelman's stepfather, Aleksandr Kuznetsov, and Bulchenko’s mother, Anna Bulchenko.
According to the police report, Gelman stabbed his stepfather several times in an argument over Gelman's mother's car. Gelman drove the car to the home of his former girlfriend, where he fatally stabbed her 56-year-old mother, then waited until his ex-girlfriend returned home from work and stabbed her to death. As he was driving away, Gelman smashed into a car and stabbed the driver in the chest when he got out of his car (the driver, 60, was hospitalized in stable condition). Gelman then struck and killed a pedestrian, Stephen Tanenbaum, 62, before abandoning the car.
Later, Gelman hailed a cab and stabbed the driver in his shoulder and neck. The driver was treated and released from a hospital. The suspect then stole a car by demanding the keys from its owner, who he stabbed in the hand,
Police officers found Gelman in a subway car as it was approaching Times Square. He was carrying a large, bloody kitchen knife and had just stabbed a subway passenger in the neck moments before.
