]30GB Zunes mysteriously begin to fail at 12AM, December 31st -- day of reckoning to follow
by Tim Stevens, posted Dec 31st 2008 at 8:45AM

Do you have a Zune 30? If so, does the thing look something like the above? That is to say, stuck at a loading bar and completely non-functional? If so, you are not alone. We've been flooded with tips about users whose 30GB players started locking up at midnight last night, essentially bricking themselves without any help from their owners. The failures are coming 24-hours ahead of the big '09 changeover, but that hasn't stopped Zune aficionados from dubbing this unfortunate flaw "Z2K." No official word yet from Microsoft, but we're guessing a made-for-TV doomsday movie staring Louis Gossett Jr. can't be too far off. Trailer after the break.

well its been about 10 minutes and my shit is still frozen, this sucks, I tried holding down the V arrow and the < button and nothing happened, the thing on yahoo said someone fixed it by jimmying the thing open and pulling out the battery and restarting, but i guess it froze again as soon as they plugged it in, they got about 20 minutes to fix this or im off to bestbuy for an ipod....

lol too much trouble to go through for something they caused.

Step 1
Tools required:

Small Phillips Screw Driver
Small Flathead or exacto razor
A Safe Open Tool (maybe 2-3)
Complete Toolkit available HERE
Start by removing the bottom dock port spacer with your razor or flathead. Make sure to insert on one of the long ends and not in the middle of the dock. This should pop off fairly easy.

Step 2
After the Dock port spacer is removed you will have access to both screws. Remove these with the Phillips + driver. Now we can crack the shell open.

Step 3
Insert your safe open case tool in between the small gap. You will have to insert this fairly hard and work it up and won until the bottom of the shell is open. Make sure not to force the case open near the headphone jack or you will tear it off the board.

Step 4
Now that we have the backing off of the front panel we can remove the battery and hard drive panels. Remove the 4 screws holding the drive case on the board as well as the clip for the battery. Take the battery out now.

Step 5
Remove both clips for the clickwheel and battery now if you haven't done so.

Step 6
After you remove the battery and 4 screws for the hard drive case lift up and put the drive with casing above the top part of the Zune (by the headphone jack). Remove the drive cable clip (black part) and then take the sticky tape off the label side of the drive. After the tape is lifted up we can remove the hard drive to replace.

Step 7
Now that the drive is out we can remove the rest of the screws to get to the LCD screen and clickwheel. Remove the 6 screws and pull the board out of the front panel.

Step 8
We see the board with screen attached free from the front panel.

Step 9
Remove the 4 clips holding the LCD screen to the board. Now you can gently lift up on the screen to expose the clip holding it to the board. Make sure not to force the screen out until the clip cable has been removed.

Step 10
We can move to the front panel and replace the clickwheel components now. These should be lifted up easily and taken out of the front panel now. There are no screws holding this in place.

Step 11
Front panel is now free from the main unit. We are all done, just go backwards to reassemble. Let us know if anything else should be added to this guide.
