SALINAS, Calif. -- Six people were shot, one fatally, including a mother and son, in a less than 90-minute span in Salinas Thursday night, continuing an unprecedented string of violence that has claimed five lives so far this year and wounded at least eight people.
Details were sketchy as officers tried to figure out what happened at each of the scenes. However, a shooting in a light industrial area on Dayton Street at about 7:30 p.m. involved a police officer and sent one man to the hospital, police said.
Meanwhile, in a second shooting across town, a mother and son, and the son’s friend, were wounded by gunfire at about 8:30 pm at a trailer complex at 150 Sherwood Drive, though the injuries were not thought to be life-threatening, said Sgt. Mike Dominici at that scene.
Those three victims were taken to Natividad Medical Center, he said. Dominici said he had no other details.
A man at the trailer park who said it was his mother and brother who were shot was rushed by police and told to move away when he crossed through the yellow crime scene tape and tried to go to his family’s home. He appeared to be in his late 20s.
He later told reporters that it was a drive-by shooting and that his brother was not involved in gangs. He said the two male victims were standing outside the mother’s home drinking beer when the shooting took place.
A neighbor said the mother was inside her home and was hit by a bullet that went through the trailer wall.
Sgt. Dominici could not confirm that information. No one who spoke would give their names or the names or ages of the victims.
A second brother, who appeared to be in his early teens, was comforted by a neighbor but declined her offer to drive him to the hospital.
Police interviewed both brothers on the scene and talked to numerous neighbors. Neither of the brothers was at or near the house when the shooting took place, they said.
At about 8:45 pm., police responded to a third shooting in which two victims were wounded, and one died, on the 700 block of Las Casitas Drive in east Salinas.
