Series Of Salinas Shootings Leaves 1 Killed, 5 Injured

http://www.thecalifornian.com/article/20090115/NEWS01/90115029

SALINAS, Calif. -- Six people were shot, one fatally, including a mother and son, in a less than 90-minute span in Salinas Thursday night, continuing an unprecedented string of violence that has claimed five lives so far this year and wounded at least eight people.

Details were sketchy as officers tried to figure out what happened at each of the scenes. However, a shooting in a light industrial area on Dayton Street at about 7:30 p.m. involved a police officer and sent one man to the hospital, police said.

Meanwhile, in a second shooting across town, a mother and son, and the son’s friend, were wounded by gunfire at about 8:30 pm at a trailer complex at 150 Sherwood Drive, though the injuries were not thought to be life-threatening, said Sgt. Mike Dominici at that scene.

Those three victims were taken to Natividad Medical Center, he said. Dominici said he had no other details.

A man at the trailer park who said it was his mother and brother who were shot was rushed by police and told to move away when he crossed through the yellow crime scene tape and tried to go to his family’s home. He appeared to be in his late 20s.

He later told reporters that it was a drive-by shooting and that his brother was not involved in gangs. He said the two male victims were standing outside the mother’s home drinking beer when the shooting took place.

A neighbor said the mother was inside her home and was hit by a bullet that went through the trailer wall.

Sgt. Dominici could not confirm that information. No one who spoke would give their names or the names or ages of the victims.

A second brother, who appeared to be in his early teens, was comforted by a neighbor but declined her offer to drive him to the hospital.

Police interviewed both brothers on the scene and talked to numerous neighbors. Neither of the brothers was at or near the house when the shooting took place, they said.

At about 8:45 pm., police responded to a third shooting in which two victims were wounded, and one died, on the 700 block of Las Casitas Drive in east Salinas.

UPDATE: Police officer wounds burglary suspect during chase
http://www.thecalifornian.com/article/20090115/NEWS01/90115030
More details on tonight's shootings in Salinas:

In the Dayton Street incident, a Monterey County Sheriff’s deputy opened fire on a suspect during a chase in the light industrial neighborhood just south of the city, according to Salinas police.

Commander Bob Eggers said the deputy, a member of the Monterey County Joint Gang Task Force, which Eggers commands, was with other members of the task force at or near a body shop of interest to investigators when, for reasons not yet released, a chase of two suspects ensued.

The man who was shot was taken by helicopter to a San Jose-area hospital with two wounds, one to the hand and one to the stomach, according to Eggers.

He said that as of 11:15 pm Thursday, indications were that the wounds were not life threatening.

At the request of Salinas police, the sheriff’s department will investigate the shooting, Eggers said.

With three shootings, resulting in one death and five people wounded, in the span of less than 90 minutes in the city Thursday night, “we had assets available” to investigate the Dayton Street incident, Eggers said.
