this would have been a good opportunity to put him in, if buster is ready/comfy. he is def not ready to start, especially with games as important as they are. but he is spending time with the major squad regardless if he gets into a game. he's getting time with all our big league pitchers, coaches, and time with bengie and whiteside; this will pay off.

i think we should try him pinch hitting a few times until he is ready to call pitches.

^^pinch hitting is a better idea than putting him at catcher at the end of a game; however, its still the same idea as giving him a taste of the game. when i said he needs to start/play a full game i didnt mean now or even this season, i just think with a potential future franchise player u shouldnt randomly put him in at all. as you said^^^^^let him be around the team, get a feel for the squad, the coaches, pitchers and bring him in next season. Unless Bengie is too hurt to play, its still his spot, and Whiteside, although hes an offensive liability, is the perfect backup catcher. We have him to thank for Brad Penny looking as good as he does, especially after that Phillies game. Whiteside called all the perfect pitches (brought Penny's curve back, he wasnt throwing it at all/or even well with the Red Sox.)

but to bring him in for an inning, or even to pinch hit would diminish what the franchise is trying to do with him. Hes not a bench guy, a utility player-he needs to be groomed for the full-time gig. And i think now would be the worst time to play him anyway.

we havent seen him play yet at this level, so we cant really draw conclusions that he isnt ready or is.. that's why im saying yesterday wouldve been harmless.

Then from there they could assess his performance, but i'm all for pinch hitting situations.

Giants calling up Bumgarner

Madison Bumgarner, the Giants' best pitching prospect, is being called up to the majors today.

If it was a surprise catcher Buster Posey got a September promotion, this is even more of a stunner considering Bumgarner is two years out of high school. He was the 10th overall pick in the 2007 draft.

The Giants might want to see how Bumgarner handles himself this month because he might be a candidate for a rotation spot next year.

At Double-A Connecticut, the lefty was 9-1 with a 1.93 ERA in 107 innings, striking out 69 and walking 30.

He opened the year with Single-A San Jose and was 3-1 with a 1.48 ERA in five starts.

UPDATE: Bumgarner to start tonight for Lincecum?

Henry Schulman reporting from the ballpark:

I want to stress that I have not confirmed this directly, but I'm getting a strong vibe that Madison Bumgarner is being promoted so he can start tonight's game in favor of Tim Lincecum, who presumably cannot start because he is hurt.

I've been told that manager Bruce Bochy is going to make an announcement at 3:45 p.m., when the clubhouse opens to the media, which is very unusual. He normally talks around 4:30.

I'll update as soon as possible:
