A high-ranking member of the Pirates' front office just confirmed -- emphatically -- that no deal is in place to send Freddy Sanchez to San Francisco.

The official said that there was the framework of a deal in place but that the Giants backed out Monday night upon learning of Sanchez's MRI. The Giants never ruled out revisiting the original framework, though, and that is the reason they are taking a second look at the knee. The Giants are in a pennant race and need help right away, so Sanchez missing even a week or two would affect matters.

'Right now, there absolutely is no deal' the official said.

yeah apparently the deal is all set on the pirates end, and the only thing holding it back is the knee situation, the ticker on csn said sanchez is being examined at this hour, hopefully we'll hear something by the end of the game

Joel Sherman of the New York Post believes the Giants are definitely getting 2B Freddy Sanchez from the Pirates.

…for a while, i though maybe the Mets would have interest in sanchez… but, given how well Luis Castillo is playing, the potential that Jose Reyes could be back in August, to trade prospects to get sanchez, who can be a free at the end of this season, seems foolish at this point…

Jon Heyman of SI.com says the Giants have discussed prospects John Bowker, Kevin Frandsen and Jesus Guzman with Pittsburgh.

…from what i can tell, the Giants and Pirates have been working on a deal for sanchez for quite some time…however, the word from out west had been that the Giants would need to send LHP Jonathan Sanchez to the Pirates in a deal for sanchez… but, perhaps things have changed…

Sanchez, 31, won a batting title in 2006, after which he hit .304 in 2007 and .271 last season. He will likely earn $8 million next season, after which he is eligible to be a free agent.

He has played mostly second base, with some time at short and third.

UPDATE 4:42 p.m.: The Giants are doing a lot of "soul-searching" right now, according to a source outside the Pirates. They need to feel secure that Sanchez would be able to join them very soon in order to revisit the aforementioned deal.
