GM abused the SS badge by putting it on a bunch of cars that didn't deserve it. Now, they are reluctant to use it and I'm happy about that.

Yes, the SS versions of those are better, but they were still far from real performance except the Silverado and Trailblazer.

GM is now back in the game as a quality manufacturer from their interior and exterior styling interior, their build quality, and drivetrains. They offer very economical cars and are back into performance with the CTS-Vs, Camaro SS, and ZL1 Camaro. A 550hp Cadillac station wagon that is also one of the best looking cars out is just ridiculous!

I think the new ecoassist technology will be a good one along with the development of their 2.0 liter turbo charged direct injection engines.

This is a great read about how GM stepped their game up in the 2000s:

The only thing I would have to add to that is that the '09 Cobalt SS is said to be much better than the original despite still having a cheesy interior. Switching from a 205hp supercharged 2.0 to a 260hp turbocharged direct injection 2.0....http://www.caranddriver.com/features/08q4/the_lightning_lap_2008-feature2

And who knows where GM would have been if it werent for Bob Lutz(probably dead), he made shit happen, he brought change...much needed change in my opinion. The current Malibu is said to have been his vision from the ground up.

Thanks for showing that book, I'm gonna check that out.

The book makes him look like GMs angel from heaven. I'm sure he helped a lot, but a lot of it was hindsight. Good read.

LOL....he IS their angel from heaven. I dont think GM would be where it is today if it wasnt for him. He was the one who gave the "go ahead" instead of sayin "no". I never understood what that meant when I was younger...the whole quality thing...for a long time I thought the editors were haters. But yes, in reality from the late seventies till the late ninties early two thou-wow, American cars really werent all that compared to the overseas competition. Smh.

Do you know if GM is going to bring that platform back to the U.S. other than a cop car?

r.i.p. G8
The "9C1" is making its police return hopefully in the U.S. as a "PPV"(Police Patrol Vehicle), but it's doubtfull they will rebadge the G8 as a Caprice and bring it back as a civilian ride. It could possibly be decommissioned and then bought, but I doubt dealerships will ever get the Statesman as a Caprice.

The Camaro uses that platform and then will most likely move to a smaller platform, Alpha. Don't think there's any rumors of them bringing it back.
GM put out a few rumblings of the possible return of a RWD GM product finding its way into precincts since Ford is now commissioning the fabulous Taurus platform with Interceptor packages.

They want to compete in that market alongside Ford and Mopar, so we will see in the future.

My bet is they won't pursue that avenue since all except their muscle cars are getting these eco-friendly motors.

I don't see it happening. It may happen, but hope (and desire) for a RWD car platform is becoming obsolete in the eyes of GM's businessmen.

2011 Chevrolet Caprice PPV - Car News

GM imports a rear-driver from the penal colony to help patrol our roads.

Rumor had it that GM would continue to import the Pontiac G8 as a police-package Chevy. It turns out rumor had it wrong—mostly. While the Pontiac G8 is officially dead, another car on its platform is coming from Australia to patrol our roads. GM will allow U.S. police departments to order a cop-spec Chevrolet Caprice beginning next year, with the first cruisers hitting the road in 2011. The Caprice is built on the Holden platform used for the G8 and which also underpins the new Camaro. Holden calls the car Statesman in Australia, while it is rebadged as a Chevy Caprice for sale in the Middle East.
At 118.5 inches, the Caprice rides on the longest wheelbase of any car using GM’s global rear-drive platform; the G8 was nearly four inches shorter between its wheels. Most of that room is accounted for in the larger back seat—GM claims a four-inch advantage in rear legroom over the Ford Crown Victoria. The Caprice PPV (for Police Patrol Vehicle) will do battle with the ubiquitous Crown Vic as well as the Dodge Charger. The front-seat design is police-specific, able to accommodate officers wearing utility belts for long drives. Departments can also opt for a rear-curtain-airbag delete to allow for a full-width rear partition, making the police safer and ignoring the extra harm that may befall perps in the back after a rollover or side-impact collision.
V-8 or V-6 Power, Uprated Brakes and More
Police-package Caprices will be motivated by either a V-6 or V-8. A 355-hp, 6.0-liter V-8 will be launched first, followed by a 3.6-liter V-6 the following year. All cars will get police-duty upgrades, including a high-output alternator; auxiliary coolers for engine oil, transmission fluid, and power-steering fluid; 18-inch steel wheels; four-wheel disc brakes with beefier brake pads; and police-calibrated stability control. A large touch-screen interface for primary vehicle controls is integrated into the center console, as well. Two batteries are mounted in the trunk, one for the engine and the other for accessories like computers, lights, and radar guns.
The Caprice doesn’t appear to share any body panels with the G8, save for the front doors, and is a much softer design in general. The car has a similar, porpoise-like side profile to the last Caprice offered here in the ’90s, which also saw police duty. There are no plans to offer a civilian version of the Caprice PPV.

I feel you on the "turbobuick" thing...because in truth, that car was originally slated to come to the U.S. as the next gen Saturn Aura, it itself bein a re-badged Opel Insignia. I like the car myself but the whole "Regal" thing seems a lil wierd....but the car tho....

Im diggin it. I hope it suceeds in its mission to help breathe life back in to the Buick nameplate.
