The only US boxer fighting today, Light Heavyweight Marcus Browne from New York lost on points to Australian Damien Hooper. Browne was winning after 2 rounds, but appeared to lose steam in the final 3rd round and Hooper took advantage piling up points. Browne is the first American to lose so far in the Olympics.

the Russians and cubans beatdown team USA day 5, handing usa three losses in a row.

highly touted 19 year old Joseph Diaz jr lost 25-15 to Cuban Alvarez.

American Super Heavyweight Dominic Breazeale received two standing 8 counts and thoroughly beat down by russian Magomed Omarov.

American Heavyweight Michael Hunter loses a heartbreaker to Russian Artur Betebiyev, after a 10-10 countback (scores were tied at 10-10 after three rounds, however after the countback, which tallies all of the judges scores even the ones thrown out, had the Russian winning).

The Cuban team remains unbeaten thus far.

Anthony Joshua Faces Erislandy Savon in Tough Opener

Finchley super-heavyweight Anthony Joshua will have to battle past a man with one of the most famous names in world amateur boxing history if he is to realise his dream of claiming a medal at his home city Olympics.

World silver medallist Joshua, one of Great Britain's best hopes for boxing gold, was handed a first round bout against Cuban Erislandy Savon - nephew of the great three-time Olympic champion Felix Savon - in today's draw at the ExCel Centre.

In a generally mixed draw for Great Britain fighters, middleweight Anthony Ogogo was paired with Junior Castillo of the Dominican Republic, against whom he will get the host nation's campaign under way on Saturday.

But there is no doubt the 6ft 6ins Joshua will be the centre of attention after landing a bout he would have preferred to avoid against the 22-year-old Cuban, a former world junior gold medallist eager to emulate his uncle, who won heavyweight gold medals in 1992, 1996 and 2000.

Joshua

Savon

so I haven't watched it yet since I was at work, but Joshua beat Savon scores of 17-16. I'm reading a lot of people saying it was a robbery and that Joshua probably won the first round, savon the second and Savon put on a beating in the third. I'll try to post the video. This was one of the fights I was most anticipating. Usually if a score is that close, it means it could have gone either way. But being that Joshua is from England, I'm betting Savon got robbed.

Also I read there were a number of bad scores and officiating throughout.

Case in point - Cuba's Jose Larduet won by disqualification over Iran's Ali Mazeheri in a heavyweight fight. Apparently Ali was given three warnings, two of them for no real apparent reason. here is a report of what went down:

Horrific officiating continues to dominate the evening portion of competition. Ali Mazeheri appeared on his way to becoming the first fighter of the 2012 London Games to defeat a Cuban entrant. However, the Iranian would fall prey not to Cuba's Jose Larduet but to a fussy referee, who issued three warnings and an eventual disqualification in the second round.

Mazaheri enjoyed a 6-4 lead through one round, the margin provided by a warning against Larduet. The two-point deficit marked the only point in this year's competition thus far in which a Cuban fighter trailed on the scorecards.

Alas, Mazaheri would feel the full wrath of the referee in round two. Three issued warnings - only one of which appeared to be justified - resulted in a disqualification over which even Larduet expressed embarrassment.

Proper protocol calls for the losing fighter to stand center right with the winner and the referee in order to officially declare the final verdict. Mazaheri never gave the referee that satisfaction, remaining in his corner for several minutes before reluctantly removing his headgear.

The discouraged Iranian heavyweight eventually walked over to congratulate the Cuban corner, though not Larduet himself. Mazaheri instead stormed out of the ring, which will most likely result in additional penalties.

Larduet will now face Clemente Russo of Italy.

scandalous.

Azerbaijan -vs- Japan bantamweight bout today. The AZE fighter was knocked down multiple times in the 3rd round without receiving an 8 count, and it appeared he was not fit to continue. The fighter who should have been stopped, shockingly won the decision. The judges gave the AZE fighter points he apparently wasn't scoring.

Fortunately AIBA has since turned over the fight:
Dan Rafael ‏ S @S2SM2C afaelespn
They did the right thing. AIBA overturned result of Satoshi Shimizu (Japan)-Magomed Abdulhamidov (Azerbaijan) bantamt bout.

What is really alarming, is the report from the BBC from 2011, which said AZE paid or bribed officials $9 million dollars in exchange for two gold medals. So the question begs, was this corruption or terrible officiating?

Yesterday, BBC has taken shocking information village sports world, the Olympic officials receiving bribes of U.S. $ 9 million from the arrangements for Azerbaijan and the promise of this country won two boxing golds Olympic 2012 in London.
Key figures of bribery on the executive director of the boxing match (WSB) Ivan Khodabakhsh. He came to a secret agreement with the Government of Azerbaijan, then contact the Association of Amateur Boxing (AIBA) to ensure that Azerbaijan has HCV.
Head out to denounce the incident told the BBC: "Azerbaijan Khodabakhsh assured that they will get two gold medals in London, but in return they have secretly paid millions of dollars. It's scary when the medal was blatantly selling. " Also BBC also found the e-mail exchange between Khodabakhsh the AIBA executive director Ho Kim and a senior figure in the Azerbaijan government to the content: "Please transfer funds invest in property as soon as possible WSB accounts of America ".
Government officials have spoken of AIBA has confirmed receiving money from Azerbaijan, but denied charges of bribery, saying only that it was the money from investors and business. Also AIBA president Wu Ching Kuo has promised to investigate this and take measures to find a suitable punishment if the evidence clear.
Meanwhile, Khodabakhsh denied allegations, saying that the claims were lies, slander. Khodabakhsh said: "I have never discussed the sale of two gold medal for Azerbaijan".

man, team USA is getting slaughtered. 7th loss in a row after today. Only 2 guys remain.

Terrell Gausha, whom some may remember from the first round when he scored a great last second stoppage, lost to 2008 Bronze Medalist Vijender Singh of India of a heartbreaking score of 16-17. I haven't watched the fight (downloading now) so I'll drop my opinion if I think it was fair or not.

Earlier, lightweight Jose Ramirez came up short 15-11 against Fazliddin Gaibnazarov of Uzbekistan.

Our last hopes are Rau'shee Warren (who makes his debut tomorrow against Frenchman Nordine Oubaali, after receiving a first round bye) and Errol Spence, who fights Krishan Vikas from India. Both fights are tomorrow.

Despite having a representative in every weight class, this could go down as the worst ever performance by team USA, unless Warren or Spence somehow capture a medal or two.

so that's it, Warren and Spence both lost, its officially the worst ever performance in history by team usa.

Spence was ROBBED though. he clearly beat the Indian down. the scoring was disgraceful. three usa losses were highly controversial, however this takes the cake.

but with that said all these guys look like they are better fit for the pros, not this faggot fencing style scoring they call olympic boxing.

can't wait to see Spence, Gausha, Warren and remariz turn probably.

Amazing, Spence receives justice! USA boxing aint dead yet!

Errol Spence Receives Justice, AIBA Overturns Loss

London, Great Britain - After reviewing the video of Bout #142 involving Welterweights (69kg) Krishan Vikas (India) and Errol Spence (USA), the Competition Jury found the following:

- There were a total of nine (9) holding fouls committed by the Indian boxer in the third round alone. However the Referee only gave one caution;

- In the second round, at the time 02:38, the boxer from India spitted out his gumshield intentionally. However the Referee didn't give any warning

Based on these findings, the Competition Jury Members unanimously decided the following:

- Decision #1: Based on the AIBA Technical & Competition Rules 12.1.9, the Referee should have given at least two (2) warnings to the Indian boxer;

- Decision #2: Although the boxer from India intentionally spitted out his gumshield, the Referee's view was blocked by the boxer from the USA and was not able to see the action;

- Final Decision: Based on Decision #1, at least four (4) points should have been awarded to the boxer from the USA. Therefore the final score should be 13:15 in favour of the USA. The protest is accepted and the winner of Bout #142 is Errol Spence (USA).

Sorry for the lack of updates. Errol Spence lost, so no american men won a single medal making this the worst ever performance by Team USA.

However...

17 year old Claressa Shields won gold against the 33 year old Russian. She will return to school to finish her senior year!

I'm surprise theres no suspicion on Shields doping like they do with every other young China athlete. Nah, she's a beast though. She looked good but at the same time, her competition was garbage. Her opponent for the gold medal moved like Frankenstein.

I know this is mostly a boxing thread, but I didn't want to add another Olympic thread, plus it'll shine some light on the terrible performance of most US combat sports athletes.

Jordan Burroughs wins first Freestyle Wrestling gold for the US in 2012 Olympics

http://www.nbcolympics.com/news-blogs/wrestling/jordan-burroughs-wins-gold.html?cid=rss

LONDON (Reuters) - Jordan Burroughs won the first wrestling gold for the United States at the London Olympics on Friday, earning a $250,000 bonus from U.S. officials and vindicating his characteristically confident choice of Twitter name, "All I See Is Gold".

The world champion with a soft spot for fast food, hip hop and tattoos overpowered Iran's Sadegh Goudarzi in the final of the 74kg (162lb) freestyle.

The final brought together two countries that are old foes on the wrestling mat and on the world stage. Their leaders are locked in a charged standoff over Iran's nuclear ambitions.

But politics were put to one side during a close-fought bout that eased pressure on a U.S. wrestling team that had previously won only a single bronze at the Games.

An ecstatic Burroughs leapt into the crowd at the end of the bout and hugged his mother before running back across the wrestling mat with the Stars and Stripes draped over his shoulders.

Not prone to self-doubt, Burroughs has "Dream It, Do It" tattooed across his chest and had predicted a gold medal in a series of upbeat messages to fans before the Games.

"I'm ready to wrestle anyone who steps across that line. If the Queen of England came out on the mat I probably would double-leg her," he said. "I was ready to go...I had my cross-hairs, my target on a gold medal."

Burroughs, 24, also beat Goudarzi in the 2011 world championship final.

Both wrestlers made a cautious start to the final, circling each other and trying not to commit.

The breakthrough came with 10 seconds of the first round to go when Burroughs rushed at his opponent, grabbed him around the knees and dumped him on the floor.

The American took the second round in a best-of-three match after bundling Goudarzi out of the ring, triggering wild celebrations from the large U.S. contingent in the packed arena.

It was an emotional victory for a wrestler born in one of the most deprived parts of New Jersey. Years of grueling training helped to hone his technique and build his strength in one of the oldest and most demanding Olympic sports.

"This has been a long time coming," he said. "I've trained for a number of years, dreamed for a number of years and got it done.

"I had a plan, executed it perfectly and I'm Olympic champ."

In the night's other final, Russia won their fourth wrestling gold of the London Games when Dzhamal Otarsultanov beat Georgia's Vladimer Khinchegashvili in the 55kg weight class, the lightest on the men's program.

It was a tense and close-fought contest and the Russian's coach picked him up in a fireman's lift and spun him round at the end of the bout as the noisy Russian contingent in the crowd cheered and waved the national flag.

Japan's Ryota Murata gets Gold defeating Brazilian Falco (silver) at middleweight.

China's Zou Shiming wins Gold model over Pongprayoon of Thailian (silver) at light flyweight (reportedly a terrible decision).

Side note:

People should read this article on the AIBI. Conflict of interests anyone? god, it's amazing how boxing can be corrupt on every level from the pro's to the amateurs. - http://www.maxboxing.com/news/sub-lead/did-aiba-lie-to-the-world-series-of-boxing-fighters
