Panthers lose QB Pike to shoulder injury; Null could be backup
The Carolina Panthers placed rookie Tony Pike on season-ending injured reserve Friday and promoted second-year pro Keith Null from the practice squad in a swap of quarterbacks.
Pike, a sixth-round draft pick, wasn't unable to throw recently because of a sore right shoulder. He played in one game this season -- a Nov. 7 loss to the New Orleans Saints -- and completed 6 of 12 passes for 47 yards.
Null was signed to the Panthers' practice squad last month and could be rookie Jimmy Clausen's backup in Sunday's game against the Seattle Seahawks. Brian St. Pierre was limited in practice Friday and listed as questionable.
Null started four games as a rookie for the St. Louis Rams last season, throwing three touchdown passes and nine interceptions.
The Panthers again will be without left guard Travelle Wharton because of turf toe. Right guard Geoff Schwartz (back), cornerback Chris Gamble (hamstring), safety Marcus Hudson (ankle) and running back Tyrell Sutton (ankle) are questionable.
