Eagles keep spending big, add guard Brandon Brooks

The Eagles keep spending that money, and this time it’s on an area of major need.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Eagles have signed guard Brandon Brooks to a five-year, $40 million deal.

The former Texans guard is an immediate upgrade to an Eagles line which never brought in enough reinforcements last year, and the results showed early on.

His signing also continues a dizzying few days in Philadelphia, with all the old Chip Kelly guys going out and a new crop of Howie Roseman guys coming in.

Texans add Brock Osweiler

The Houston Texans have their starting quarterback. The Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos do not.

Brock Osweiler has agreed to a deal with the Texans, according to reports on ESPN, NFL Network and 9 News in Denver.

The Texans have wanted to bolster their quarterback position after last year’s primary starter, Brian Hoyer, laid an egg in their playoff loss to the Chiefs. They now think Osweiler is the man to lead them not just to the playoffs, but deep into the playoffs.

But as big a story as the Texans getting their quarterback is, the bigger story may be the Broncos’ search for a quarterback. With Peyton Manning retiring, the defending champs now have neither of their quarterbacks from last season. They’ll have to start over from scratch on offense, and hope their defense can keep them on top.

Texans add Lamar Miller, too

The Houston Texans will look a lot different in 2016, primarily in the backfield.

Joining quarterback Brock Osweiler in Houston will be running back Lamar Miller, per a league source.

Miller will sign a four-year deal, worth $26 million. Of that amount, $14 million is fully guaranteed at signing.

He had an opportunity to sign with another team at a $7 million annual average, but on a five-year deal. Miller opted for the shorter contract.

Miller, who has spent all four career seasons with the Dolphins, has said he wants to average 20 touches per game. The investment suggests the Texans are willing to give him that shot.

Jets respond by signing running back Matt Forte

The Jets lost a bell-cow running back when Chris Ivory took the money and ran to Jacksonville.

But they filled that hole with an experienced guy today.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Jets are signing former Bears running back Matt Forte.

The Bears let the 30-year-old Forte walk, though his numbers last year didn’t indicate a precipitous drop-off.

Forte had 898 yards rushing and 389 yards receiving and seven total touchdowns last year, in 13 games.

He might be a bit of a stop-gap, but he’s an accomplished runner who will keep them from missing Ivory all that much.

Eagles, Rodney McLeod agree to deal

The Eagles extended the contract of safety Malcolm Jenkins last month and Jenkins said after he signed his new deal that he hoped the team will bring back Walter Thurmond to play alongside him again in 2016.

There hasn’t been any sign that Thurmond will re-sign with the Eagles with the new league year hours away from starting and the Eagles may have already landed their preferred starter. According to multiple reports, the Eagles have agreed to a deal with Rodney McLeod, who started every game for the Rams for the last three seasons.

Assuming McLeod doesn’t have the same change of heart about joining the Eagles that running back Frank Gore experienced last year, he’ll be signing a five-year deal worth up to $37 million that includes $17 million in guarantees. Jenkins stands to make $40.5 million over the same span under the terms of his new contract.

McLeod had 82 tackles, three forced fumbles and an interception for the Rams last season. His departure would make it two starters gone from the secondary as the Rams make their way to Los Angeles, but they did use the franchise tag to hold onto Trumaine Johnson.

Chargers, Travis Benjamin agree to terms

The Chargers have agreed to terms with Browns wide receiver Travis Benjamin and will sign him later Wednesday. That a deal is in place was first reported by ESPN and confirmed by the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Benjamin should immediately add a big-play threat to the Chargers’ offense and serve as the team’s primary punt returner. The Chargers finished last in the NFL in 2015 with 84 total punt return yards, the lowest total by any NFL team since 1981.

Ron Butler, Benjamin’s agent, told The Dan Sileo Show on 1090 in San Diego that Benjamin will sign a four-year deal with the Chargers and that he had conversations with multiple teams, including the Browns.

Benjamin, 26, posted career highs last season with 68 catches for 966 yards and five touchdowns. He also returned a punt for a touchdown for the third time in his four seasons.

With the Chargers having lost veteran wide receiver Malcom Floyd to retirement a year after losing Eddie Royal to free agency, Benjamin should get plenty of reps at wide receiver in addition to the return game.

Eagles sign ex-Bills linebacker Nigel Bradham

The Eagles are bringing in a linebacker who knows their defense.

Nigel Bradham, who has spent his first four NFL seasons with the Bills, has signed with the Eagles, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

Bradham had his best season in 2014, when Jim Schwartz was the Bills’ defensive coordinator. Schwartz is now the defensive coordinator of the Eagles.

A 2012 fourth-round pick out of Florida State, Bradham started 38 games for the Bills in four seasons, including 11 games last season.

Jaguars adding safety Tashaun Gipson

A year after the Jaguars thought about pursuing Browns safety Tashaun Gipson as a restricted free agent, multiple reports say they’ve landed him on the open market.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported Gipson will sign a five-year deal worth up to $35.5 million with the Jaguars.

Gipson was named to the Pro Bowl in 2014, when he finished with six interceptions in 11 games. He had two interceptions in 13 games last season, when he played under a second-round restricted free agent tender. Gipson broke into the league as undrafted free agent in 2012 and had five interceptions in his first season as a starter in 2013.

Gipson becomes the fourth Browns starter from last season to land a deal elsewhere at the start of the free agency period. Center Alex Mack will sign with the Falcons, wide receiver Travis Benjamin will sign with the Chargers and right tackle Mitchell Schwartz is finalizing a five-year deal with the Chiefs.

The Jaguars have had a busy — and expensive — start to free agency. They’ve also added defensive tackle Malik Jackson and running back Chris Ivory.

Coby Fleener joins Saints on five-year deal

When the Colts re-signed tight end Dwayne Allen, it left the question of whether they’d be able to hold onto the other tight end that they drafted a round ahead of Allen in 2012.

The answer is no. The Saints announced Wednesday that they have signed Coby Fleener to a five-year contract.

Fleener, No. 64 on PFT’s list of this year’s top free agents, was a second-round pick in 2012 and has been a leading receiving option over the last three years in Indianapolis. He caught at least 51 passes each season and averaged just over 624 receiving yards per year while playing with college teammate Andrew Luck.

He doesn’t have the same kind of relationship with Drew Brees, but the Saints quarterback will likely welcome the arrival of another receiving target with Benjamin Watson fleeing for a chance to play with the Ravens this week. The Saints also re-signed Michael Hoomanawanui and tendered restricted free agent Josh Hill.

I agree Osweiler looks good but I dont know if he warrants as much as he got. On the other hand I guess it makes sense seeing as QBs are such a hot commodity, that plus his height. That WR core isnt on the level of the Broncos tho, Nate Washington is too old to rely on and Shorts too inconsistent if Hopkins is getting doubled all game.

Im thinking they signed Sanchez as their backup, since they have to replace #1 and #2. He's not starting there. Elway don't live that life.

I don't know man, they gave up a draft pick to the Eagles to land him and they're already doing press conferences touting him as "competing for the starting job". A random signee for backup wouldn't even be given a press conference.

If they don't land the trade for Kaepernick the only other option would be Robert Griffin III.

All of the other options aren't any better than Sanchez like Ryan Fitzpatrick, Jimmy Clausen, Brandon Weeden or (lol) Johnny Manziel etc.

If they don't sign Kaep or RGIII they're gonna be stuck with signing another low tier bum and having a competition in training camp or drafting QB and having Sanchez more than likely start because they'll only be able to land a late round QB.

They will draft a QB and have him compete right away. Conor Cook seems to be the consensus at the moment...but thats if they stay put and dont move up to get a bigger name...like Goff.

Either way, this was not a good move by Denver IMHO...why trade a guy who has been groomed the last 2 years and looked ready to take over? Now you need to start all over in a weak QB class.
