Age in boxing is irrelevant it's about what kind of fights you had. Canelo is ONLY 25 but he's a 10 year veteran, for example.
Broner was a favorite to beat Maidana. Maidana hadn't looked good in previous fights against good opponents. Hell, I incorrectly thought it was a bit of a cherry pick fight myself and that was a popular view in the boxing community and media at the time. What we found is that Broner just isn't that good and dominated the lower weight class opponents because he was so massively bigger than everyone.
Algeiri is a safe fight. He has no power, he's a decent boxer that's it so it's not that risky for Spence and it's a good way to see where he's at.
Algeiri also isn't all that experienced. Remember, he was a kickboxer and later transitioned to boxing. Spence probably has more experience as a boxer.
