OMAHA, Neb. — Nonito Donaire isn’t getting a shot at Scott Quigg, but he has another meaningful fight.

The Filipino Flash and Cesar Juarez have agreed to a WBO junior featherweight international title on Dec. 11 in the main event on truTV, Donaire’s manager Cameron Dunkin told USA TODAY Sports on Wednesday. The likely site is Puerto Rico, but nothing is set yet.

Guillermo Rigondeaux defeated Donaire (35-3, 23 KOs) in 2013 to win the become the division’s current WBO champion, but hasn’t fought in almost one year and has no fights scheduled. He was asked by the sanctioning body last week to show cause why he shouldn’t be stripped of the title. If he is indeed forced to relinquish the belt, the Donaire-Juarez matchup will crown a new WBO champion without the secondary international designation attached.

Donaire, the 2012 boxing writers’ fighter of the year, was knocked out by Nicholas Walters last November and has feasted on lesser opposition since, with second-round stoppage victories over William Prado and Anthony Settoul. The 32-year-old returned to 122 pounds after four fights at featherweight.

Juarez (17-3, 13 KOs) has never scored a win over a name opponent, but is the WBO’s No. 1 contender after topping Juan Carlos Sanchez Jr. in July. The 24-year-old Mexican will step way up in class with the Donaire assignment.

Boxer Terrel Williams is deeply shaken by bout that left opponent Prichard Colon in coma

Terrel Williams claimed the most impressive victory of his career Saturday night, but before he could emerge from postfight meetings to celebrate, he was floored by heartbreaking news.

Prichard Colon, the 23-year-old Puerto Rican who Williams knocked down twice en route to a victory by disqualification in Fairfax, Va., had fallen ill after suffering his first loss and was transported to a hospital.

Colon required brain surgery to relieve swelling and remained in a coma Tuesday, his family keeping vigil.

“I just wanted to go home [Saturday] and enjoy my victory with my family, just like I’m sure he wanted to go home and be with his family,” Williams, 31, told The Times on Tuesday in a telephone interview from his Woodland Hills home.

Williams said he has cried several times since learning of Colon’s condition, and paused to collect himself while talking about hearing how dire Colon's plight was.

.My heart dropped, my stomach dropped. I'm praying for him multiple times daily to make a full recovery. I cannot enjoy this victory. I'm worried about Prichard. - Terrel Williams
“My heart dropped, my stomach dropped. I’m praying for him multiple times daily to make a full recovery,” Williams said. “I cannot enjoy this victory. I’m worried about Prichard.”

Williams (15-0, 12 knockouts) took the fight on three weeks’ notice and found himself in a scrap against Colon, who modeled himself after legendary countryman Felix Trinidad.

“It was like fighting a mirror of me. The guy was sharp, strong, fast,” Williams said. “I knew he was a great fighter, a future world champion. I didn’t see any flaws in him. I told myself this fight is going to be difficult because I wanted to win and knew I was going to have to go through punches to do so. I had to be strong and stick to the game plan.”

But the plan was wrinkled by unexpected turns.

Colon was disciplined in the fifth round after striking Williams with a low blow deemed so severe that referee Joseph Cooper deducted two points from Colon.

Williams hit Colon with punches behind the head that caused Colon to take an extended break, and then forced Cooper to deduct a point from Williams in the seventh round.

A spokeswoman for the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation told The Times that the department is launching an investigation into “the situation, the incident and the cause” of Colon’s injury.

Mary Vaughan added that Virginia Boxing Commissioner David Holland told the respective corners “to get [the] fighters under control and not to engage in stall tactics.”

Williams said he can’t remember what was said by officials as the point deductions were distributed.

“It’s a lot different when you’re fighting. Your emotions and your adrenaline are going, so a lot of the things you see on the outside looking in, I don’t remember,” Williams said. “We were in a fight, a tough fight, and I just wanted to win.

“There was never any thinking that I was going to do some dirty tactics … he didn’t have to do that, either, and I know he didn’t do anything maliciously. It’s just that when you’re in the heat of the moment, you’re fighting, you’re boxing, you’re landing punches, and sometimes punches land where they’re not supposed to land.

“But I know from my end, I didn’t do anything maliciously, just like I know he didn’t do anything to try to damage me permanently. … I have nothing but respect for the fighter.”

In the ninth round, Williams took control, twice knocking down Colon. Colon’s cornermen cut off his gloves after the round, thinking it had been the 10th and final round, and Cooper disqualified Colon.

This past ppv was a legit showcase of 2 possible #1 p4p fighters showing the world how it's supposed to be done and it should have done 250k ppv buys easily. CZAR @CZAR is 100% correct in saying that these are weak numbers and HBO fumbled big time. Shit, last night I got OnDemand and they are barely showing the Faceoff! WTF! Too little, too late. No one here can justify these numbers because at the end of the day this was a business move and the whole point of a ppv is to maximize the dollar and HBO didn't do that.

I don't know if anyone is trying to justify anything. The main question is, why does it even matter to anyone that's not financially involved with any of it? The only time I complain about anything to do with money in boxing is when guys are grossly underpaid for putting their bodies and minds on the line, other than that I really don't care how much money a fight brings in.

Neither HBO, K2, Golden Boy, or Golovkin are going to ruined or hurt by this one PPV in the least bit.

I'm going to watch any fight on any platform, my main question going into any fight is is it a fight between 2 top 15 fighters in the division or for a major title in the division? If the answer to that is yes then I'm fine (obviously different for fights involving prospects). I don't see how anyone can change their perspective on a fight on whether other people watched it, what promotions they fight under, or what channel it's on.

There's a card coming up on 11/4 in Russia that's filled with good fights and it's likely to only be broadcast there and maybe in the UK. We're in an age where nearly everything is made available and I don't really care how the promoters/providers line their pockets as long as the fighters aren't getting dicked.

Good news, glad to see Nevada stepping up to block bullishit fights. I hope to see more of this.

Nevada Commission says "no" to the Rohan Murdock vs. Andre Ward mismatch

Ben Damon ‏@ ben_damon
Both parties have agreed but now the Nevada commission looks likely to block this fight. Ward wanted it at 175lbs

I've gathered from other sources the Nevada Commission has in fact said "no" to this ugly mismatch.

Makes me wonder wth is going on with Ward? He must have some confidence issues to want to fight multiple soft touches and forcing them out of their own weight classes. Maybe his past injury was worse than he led us to believe? Whatever the case he is not acting like one of boxings best fighters, he's acting like a guy that just got KTFO.

Ward has talked a good game and the NSAC are seeing the bullshit for what it is. This ain't music, where you live off royalties for shit you did six years ago. This man is still living off shit he did shit years ago and will remind you of it every chance he gets because he hasn't done anything since except beat a weight drained Dawson at a catch weight. He has stayed relevant by keeping the name of other fighters in his mouth. In addition the pseudo good guy image is glass.

While I think Ward Vs. Murdock is a shit fight, this is the same commission that allowed LSC Vs. Cayetano, plus allow undefeated fighters to pad their records against guys with losing records all the time.

I hope it's a sign of things to come with them but it's a bit on the curious why they chose this fight to make their moral stand on.

I don't think it's the one fight that's a problem, I think it has to do with the fact he's coming off the Paul Smith tune up where he was a 70-1 favorite. But yeah, obviously this doesn't mean a lot of there is no consistency. Boxing seriously is hurting right now from a lack of authority and regulation.

Latest I read today is a quote from Canelo, saying he will NOT fight Golovkin next unless it's at 155 pounds and that he will need another year or two before "his body is ready for 160, despite consistently weighing 173-174 pounds on fight night and weighing 168 pounds today!!! If the WBC doesn't enforce the mandatory immediately and strip Canelo, what is the Damn point in having any rules? Might as well toss everything out of the window and stop calling it a sport.

True but at least they are taking a stand now. This is a guy who is ranked 2 in the p4p list yet he's fighting guys where the odds are 70-1. Lol.

Not related, but I certainly don't think Ward should be ranked p4p if he's taking these kinds of fights. He shouldn't be after Paul Smith.

The Ring magazine took a stand a bit on the Canelo Golovkin issue and said they will take away Canelo's (or Cotto) Ring "lineal" belt if he doesn't fight Golovkin, which could be a first.

So the latest for Andre Ward's opponent is it's now looking like 38 year old super middleweight journeyman Alexander Brand, who started boxing at age 32. Ward will have him move up to 175 pounds. Not sure if that's a step up from Rohan or not as I know nothing about this guy.

Brand's an awkward fighter. Thought he beat Badou Jack when he fought him on Showtime (close fight, not really a robbery IMO). Besides that doesn't look like he's fought anyone worth mentioning except maybe Acosta who got smoked by Stieglitz in his title shot.

FWIW, I'd pick him to beat Murdock I guess.
