Arum on Chavez: F***ing Haymon Destroyed Our Work!

By Steve Kim

The loss by Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on Saturday night at the StubHub Center in Carson, California to Andrzej Fonfara didn't necessarily bring about unbridled joy from Bob Arum - who had promoted much of his career before they split - who was in attendance for Terence Crawford's impressive stoppage of Thomas Dulorme in Arlington, Texas.

"Well, Crawford's win made me very happy and I wasn't happy necessarily on Chavez's loss because, y'know... what had took us eight or nine years to build, f***ing (Al) Haymon destroyed in one f***ing night,"said Arum to BoxingScene.com on Monday morning.

"So why would I be happy? He exposed what we all knew about Chavez: that he had built his reputation on his ability to come down in weight and then hydrate up so that he was fighting smaller guys.

"Look at every one of his fights, when did he ever fight a guy his own size?"

The fight with Fonfara was at a catch-weight of 172-pounds and for much of the night he was overmatched both physically and technically by the Polish fighter who now resides in Chicago.

"We never, ever, ever put Chavez in a fight where we did not clear it with the father who knows more about boxing than any of those guys around. Who best understands his sons limitations than Julio Sr?," said Arum.

And the the father did go on the record before this fight stating that he would not have chose Fonfara as the opponent in this circumstance, given his son's layoff and the fact that Fonfara was a naturally bigger fighter.

Chavez Jr's night ended with beer being pelted on him from the audience.

"I know that the Mexican fans have been off this guy because they're very discerning and he did the most inexcusable thing for a Mexican - not losing or getting beat up - but quitting. Mexican fighters don't quit," stated Arum, who just recently took a financial settlement to walk away from Chavez.

So can this be put together again? Well, that's not Arum's problem anymore.

"I have no idea, I couldn't care less, I really feel sorry for he father, who I have a great love for. I have nothing against the son. The son is what he is, somebody who is very, very spoiled, very, very entitled and he got what he deserved."

Steve Cunningham Inks Pact With Al Haymon

Philadelphia--Former two-time world cruiserweight champion and current Heavyweight contender, Steve "USS" Cunningham has signed with adviser Al Haymon.

Cunningham of Philadelphia is excited about the prospects for his future.

"I'm looking forward to working with Al, he's a genius at what he does. I've been watching him for several years and seeing all that he accomplishes for his fighters but have always been on the outside looking in due to contractual obligations. It finally lined up to where we can work together and it's going to great. I believe my best fights have yet to be seen,"said Cunningham

Cunningham has a record of 28-7 with 13 knockouts. He won the IBF Cruiserweight championship when he traveled to Poland and defeated Krzysztof Wlodarczyk on May 26, 2007. He defended the title by stopping Marco Huck via 12th round stoppage in Bielfield, Germany on December 29, 2007. Cunningham became a two-time champion on June 5, 2010 when he stopped Troy Ross in five rounds.

Cunningham is coming off a controversial split decision defeat to Vyacheslav Glazkov on March 14 in Montreal.

Steve and his wife/manager Livvy will be honored this Friday night at the 90th annual BWAA Awards dinner as they will receive the Bill Crawford Courage Award for their perseverance while their 9-year old daughter Kennedy went through a life saving heart transplant last December.

The awards dinner will take place at Capitale in New York City.

Why is Kovalev condemned but Ali wasn’t?

By Gerardo Granados: Days ago I saw a tweet on the net, posted by several sources stating that it was a IBF/WBA/WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev tweet in which as the reader already must know shows a picture which was very offensive towards Adonis Stevenson, it was said that hours later the tweet was deleted. Two days passed and then Kovalev offered an apology arguing he is a foreigner and was not aware of the implications such picture had in our culture.

To be fair until I saw the apology I had the doubt of the authenticity of such tweet; but I wondered if Kovalev had done it as a mere joke or if he was serious about it. The shadow of the doubt was there and my view of the fighter changed, because even though I like trash talkers a lot I despise all racist rants.

Back in October 1 of 1975 Muhammad Ali fought Smoking Joe Frazier for the third time and as a part of the promotion of the Thrilla in Manila, Ali insulted Frazier more than once calling him names and using a small size rubber gorilla to refer to Frazier. I was just a small kid then but as the reader I have seen many documentaries that portrait Ali´s offensive conduct. When I saw it, it made me sick, because Ali was supposed to be a human rights activist and to insult Frazier that way was beyond any justification.

Please don’t get me wrong I am not trying to justify Kovalev´s attitude I am just remembering another case in which the media did not judge so severely a boxer who knew very well what meant to other fellow African American to be portrayed the way he was during the promotion of the fight.

Let’s not forget that Prize Fighting is not a delicate or elitist sport like Ballet and Jockey; and many of his participants can be rude and violent people, and to expect that fighters to be fine gentlemen is not a very smart idea.
The damage on Kovalev´s image is done be it small or big, now it’s up to fight fans to decide what to believe. If he was serious about the picture then for sure I will stop following him but if he is honest on his apology then I won’t condemn him for his mistake. But, I want to ask the reader why condemn Kovalev when Ali wasn’t?

Here was the tweet in question:

Few things:

1). Stevenson actually does have similar features of a monkey, like George Bush. See evidence below:

2). Kovalev is from Russia. They don't have the same history of racism of blacks as the US. They never had slavery. There is no word for "nigger" or anything like that. A harmless joke in Russia culture (saying someone looks like a monkey) doesn't have the same racial implications as in the US of calling a black man a monkey. That isn't to say there isn't racism in Russia, of course there is especially since the fall of the Soviet Union and emergence of Right Wing groups. But Kovalev has a black trainer, black friends and looks to me as if he was simply ignorant on his joke.

3). What Ali did, the way he treated Frazier, was BRUTAL. He didn't just call him a monkey or a guerilla, like Kovalev implied with his tweet, it was some deep, hardcore racist shit! And there have been a lot of people, articles and books that criticized Ali for his actions. Ali was hated by millions at the time. People loved him more and more as he aged. But he was definitely condemned by many at the time.

It doesnt matter Ali is black so there is no issue. Got Em!!
I don't think you're aware of the things Ali said. Black racism had more to do with class or perceived class, there is black racism inside of the black community, lighter skinned vs dark skinned, etc etc. Ali called Frazier “Uncle Tom,” “white people’s champion,” “ignorant,” “gorilla,” etc etc.

This “Uncle Tom” moniker was quite ironic given Frazier’s humble beginnings as a son of a sharecropper in Beaufort, South Carolina, who relocated to Philadelphia because of the extreme racism that he experienced in the south.
While promoting their epic third fight, titled the “Thrilla in Manila,” Ali even used a visual prop to degrade Frazier as he pulled out a rubber toy gorilla and began pounding it repeatedly. Ali would verbally taunt, “It will be a thrilla when I get the gorilla in Manila.” Ali also pushed his nose flat to resemble that of a monkey’s and intentionally spoke in an inarticulate manner to further mock Frazier. A routine which Frazier contends caused his kids to get teased at school and made them come home crying.

Shortly before he fought Joe Frazier in the Philippines in 1975, Muhammad Ali met with the leaders of the Ku Klux Klan.

Far from being embarrassed about sharing jaw-time with the Grand Chief Bigot or whatever the loon in the sheet called himself, Ali boasted about it.

Ali was crazy for meeting with the KKK but regardless of what he said its not the same because of the fact he is black. Whether its right or wrong to say it doesnt matter. They are the same color/nationality so its not a big deal. Just how it is. Maybe Ali at one time thought himself was white lol. I have no clue. Got Em!!

Regardless, Kovalev's Twitter joke wasn't as bad. Just poking fun Stevenson. Ali was pretty terrible to Frazier, which was a shame considering everything Frazier did for Ali when he was down (giving him money when he was broke, petitioning the President regarding Ali and the draft and much more). So for Ali to be so viscous to a friend was pretty low. He didn't just tease the man, ge tried to ruin him.

"See," he says, "you gotta be black to appreciate just how pretty I am. The people all know that. Look at my skin. Look at how nice and bronze it is. Not Frazier. Frazier is real dark, real black. He's just an ugly nigger."-Muhammad Ali

"A little old nigger boy who ain't been anywhere 'cept Philly, never done anything for nobody 'cept rich peple that back him and politician crooks, never had a thought in his dumb head 'cept for himself"-Muhammad Ali

"This is black. You can't take who I am. You turn on your friend for what? So you impress them Muslim fools?"-Joe Frazier

I hear you but it all boils down to race. You cant be of another race and call a black man a monkey! Simple as that joke or not. I actually believe Kovalev when he says he wasnt being a racist but you still cant do it because it will be taking as a racist atttempt. A black man doin it to another black man isnt gonna be a big deal because they are the same race. Just how it is. Got Em!!

Well right, that's why he deleted the tweet and apologized. I'm just saying I don't think he meant to be racist (I'm not saying it was ok to tweet that, just saying he wasn't realizing how people were gonna take it).

Also I was disagreeing with the article because Ali actually did receive a ton of backlash for the stuff he said.

Speaking of Purse bids, I guess there's a ton of drama with Kovalev vs Stevenson. Kathy Duva says they want to negotiate after Kovalev's mandatory against Muhammadi, which is fine. The problem though is Kovalev signed a multi fight deal with HBO, and Stevenson is being featured as a PBC fighter. Stevenson has no network contract and he's free to fight on any network, but the chances of him fighting on HBO being he's a PBC guy are probably slim to none. I'm thinking there are two possible ways this fight happens - on PPV, or if HBO allows Kovalev to fight on another network (also slim to none chances on that happening). So this fight may not happen any time soon.

Haymon is building something that could be very cool for boxing, fights on all sorts of networks and in the mainstream which is awesome. But the first couple years there's going to be some growing pains. Any HBO guy most likely will never fight a PBC guy, so fights like this, or Golovkin vs Quillin, or Lomachenko vs Santa Cruz, they aren't going to happen. There will be a ot of great fights within the next couple years, but there's also going to be a few awesome fights that really stand out that are going to be victim of this "transitional period".
