Backup LB Chase Thomas has a torn ACL

The San Francisco 49ers linebackers corps has taken another hit.

Reserve outside linebacker Chase Thomas has an ACL tear in his right knee. This happened in the wake of inside linebackers Patrick Willis and Chris Borland retiring within six days of each other, and with NaVorro Bowman still rehabbing from the devastating injury to his left knee in January, 2014.

Thomas, wearing a brace and walking with a limp, spoke to the Sacramento Bee and San Francisco Chronicle on Thursday at Stanford's pro day and said he suffered the injury "when he planted awkwardly during an offseason training session," per the Bee.

An undrafted free agent out of Stanford, Thomas spent time with the New Orleans Saints, Oakland Raiders, Atlanta Falcons and Green Bay Packers before coming to the Niners last year. After beginning the season on the 49ers practice squad, he made his NFL debut in November and played on special teams in five games, getting two tackles.

Thomas, 25, is one of four outside linebackers on the 49ers roster, along with Ahmad Brooks, Corey Lemonier, Aaron Lynch and Aldon Smith.

Asked about Borland's retirement after one NFL season, which he explained to ESPN's Outside the Lines was a preventative measure for potential future brain injuries, Thomas said he backed his friend.

"I respect his decision," Thomas said, according to the Chronicle. "There's nothing wrong about being careful and cautious.

"Anyone could say 'That makes sense. I probably shouldn't do this.' But at the same time, there's a lot of guys that would take that risk. People could say ‘What's he doing?' But at the same time, it's his decision. If he wants to go do something else, that's completely fine … . I totally support him in his decision."

49ers “discussing” free agent LBs Lance Briggs and Mason Foster

With the big-money free agents long gone, teams are left to sift through the remaining scraps, which mostly consists of veterans and underachievers. And with the 49ers desperate for help, they’ve had “discussions” about signing Lance Briggs, according to the Sacramento Bee.

Briggs has been one of the best 4-3 outside linebackers of his era, spending all 12 seasons of his career in Chicago and going to seven Pro Bowls. The 34-year-old grew up in California and went to college at Arizona. The 49ers tried to lure him back to the West Coast in 2008 as a free agent, but were found guilty of tampering and docked a fifth-round draft pick. Briggs ended up back in Chicago, but is free again with no strings attached this time.

He’s no longer the player he was just a couple years ago. Injuries have hit Briggs hard and limited him to just 17 games the past two seasons. Sliding him in at inside linebacker in a 3-4 could be a way to squeeze another year or two out of his body.

The 49ers are also kicking the tires on free agent linebackers Mason Foster and Erin Henderson, having scheduled a free-agent visit with Henderson for Wednesday. GM Trent Baalke will surely address the position in the draft.

Lance Briggs to visit the 49ers on Monday

With a big hole to fill at inside linebacker, the 49ers identified Mason Foster and Lance Briggs as two potential targets in free agency this week. Foster signed with the Bears instead, but Briggs is heading to San Francisco for a visit.

Briggs told Vaughn McClure of ESPNChicago.com that he will visit with the 49ers on Monday. Briggs is from the area and grew up a 49ers fan.

The 34-year-old Briggs was informed by the Bears this year that he won’t be back in Chicago, but he says he can “still perform at an elite level.” That’s debatable, but if Briggs can be anything close to the player he once was, he’d represent a major upgrade for the 49ers. With the retirements of Chris Borland and Patrick Willis, San Francisco desperately needs help at the position.

If Briggs doesn’t sign with the 49ers, other options include the Buccaneers (where he’d be reunited with former Bears coach Lovie Smith) and Cowboys (where he’d be reunited with Rod Marinelli, an assistant on Smith’s staff who is now the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator). Even at his advanced age, there are probably a few defenses that Briggs can help, and he’ll likely sign with one soon.

Desmond Bishop to visit 49ers on Monday

The 49ers need linebackers. The next one they add may be one that was on the team at the end of the 2014 season.

Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com reports that Desmond Bishop will visit the 49ers on Monday. He appeared the final two games of the season.

Bishop spent time with the Cardinals in 2014 after one season with the Vikings and five with the Packers.

A member of Green Bay’s Super Bowl XLV championship team, the 29-year-old Bishop has 27 career regular-season starts.

Desmond Bishop returns to 49ers

The 49ers have been talking to a variety of free agent linebackers in recent days and they signed one of them on Tuesday.

Desmond Bishop’s agent told Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee that Bishop will return to the team on a one-year deal. Bishop signed with the team late last season after injuries gutted their linebacking corps and made two tackles in two games with the team.

Bishop also spent time with the Cardinals in 2014 and played four games for the Vikings in 2013 after missing the entire 2012 season. Before moving to Minnesota, Bishop spent five seasons with the Packers. He was a starter for the final two of those seasons and totaled more than 100 tackles each season while also recording eight sacks.

Bishop will likely fight for time behind Navorro Bowman and Michael Wilhoite as long as Bowman has recovered from the knee injury that kept him out for all of last year. Nick Moody and Shayne Skov are also on hand as reserve options for the Niners in the wake of the retirements of Patrick Willis and Chris Borland this month.

Arik Armstead to visit with 49ers

Word last month was that 49ers defensive end Justin Smith would join linebackers Patrick Willis and Chris Borland in retiring from the NFL, but Smith said at the time that his decision wasn’t “100 percent.”

Smith hasn’t announced anything about his plans in either direction since then, leaving some uncertainty on the defensive front. The 49ers are going to need some young blood on the defensive line whether or not Smith returns for a 15th season since both he and Darnell Dockett are closer to the end of their careers than the start.

One name under consideration is Oregon’s towering Arik Armstead. Armstead, who is 6-foot-7 and played basketball during his early years in Eugene, is coming off his first year as a full-time football player and Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee reports that he will be one the 49ers’ pre-draft visitors this month.

Scouts who like Armstead believe he’ll continue to improve now that he’s turned his focus solely to football, something that could make him an appealing choice in the event Smith does return as he’d have a year to refine his skills before the team would need to rely on him heavily.

49ers to introduce first-ever alternate uniforms

Thursday’s 49ers draft party won’t simply celebrate the newest member of the team. It’ll also include a look at the team’s first-ever alternate uniforms.

The 49ers will be unveiling the new alternate jersey, the first change to the team’s uniform since 2009.

“I think the fans are going to be excited when they see our new look,” 49ers linebacker Navorro Bowman said in a press release. “I think the fans are going to understand we mean business. All I can say is we won’t have to worry about how we look, because we’ll know we look good.”

While the 49ers have never had an alternate uniform, they fully embraced the throwback uniforms worn by all teams in the NFL’s 75th season of 1994. Originally planned for limited use, the NFL allowed each team to wear their old-school uniforms as often as they pleased, and the 49ers rode theirs all the way to their most recent Super Bowl victory.
