Bellator announces signing of UFC contender Phil Davis

One of the UFC’s top light heavyweights is heading to rival Bellator MMA, officials today announced.

Phil Davis (13-3 MMA, 9-3 UFC), who’s ranked No. 7 in the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA light-heavyweight rankings, has signed an exclusive multi-fight contract with the Spike TV-televised promotion.

A debut date and opponent were not revealed, and financial terms of the deal were not disclosed

“I can’t wait to be fighting in Bellator and wreck shop on everyone,” Davis stated. “I am the absolute best and most dominant grappler to ever fight in MMA, and I’m excited to get in there and compete at my new home.”

Davis recently completed the final fight on his UFC contract with a narrow split-decision loss to Ryan Bader in January at UFC on FOX 14.

The 30-year-old, who won an NCAA Division I national wrestling championship with Penn State in 2008 (and was a four-time All-American overall), opened his MMA career in 2008 and joined the UFC after just four pro fights. He won his first five fights with the promotion, which included a submission victory over Alexander Gustafsson, before a title-eliminator defeat to Rashad Evans in 2012.

Recently, he’s faced the cream of the crop of the 205-pound division, which included decision victories over ex-champ Lyoto Machida and recent title challenger Glover Teixeira, as well as losses to Bader and Anthony Johnson.

“Phil is a world class mixed martial artist, and we are very happy to be adding him to our roster of some of the best light heavyweights in the world,” Bellator President Scott Coker stated. “Bellator remains fully committed to building its world-class roster by signing top free agents like Davis, as well as grooming up-and-coming stars. We’ve got some amazing matchups in mind for ‘Mr. Wonderful’ that we will be announcing in the weeks to come.”

An obvious possibility? A fight with reigning champion Liam McGeary (10-0 MMA, 7-0 BMMA), who won the title with a victory over Emanuel Newton earlier this year.

Despite suspensions, ex-UFC champ Anderson Silva stumps for Nick Diaz rematch

Despite some more pressing business – namely their failed drug tests and pending suspensions – former UFC champion Anderson Silva is stumping for a rematch with Nick Diaz.

After breaking his leg in a December 2013 title fight and rematch with reigning titleholder Chris Weidman, Silva (34-6 MMA, 17-2 UFC) returned from a 13-month layoff earlier this year and defeated longtime welterweight Diaz (26-10 MMA, 7-7 UFC) in UFC 183’s pay-per-view middleweight headliner on Jan. 31.

Despite a pretty clear decision victory (scores were 49-46, 50-45 and 50-45), Silva, who turned 40 on Tuesday, today campaigned for a rematch. While the initial pay-per-view bout took place in Las Vegas, Silva wants the rematch in his native Brazil (via Instagram):

Of course, both fighters have plenty going on outside the cage.

Following UFC 183, both fighters failed drug tests and were issued temporary suspensions. While Diaz was flagged for marijuana (his third such offense), the Nevada State Athletic Commission announced Silva’s pre-fight test came back positive for a pair of anabolic steroids. A subsequent fight-night test detected a pair of undisclosed benzodiazepines, as well as a steroid.

In a statement, Silva denied using any banned substances and said he will fight the NSAC’s findings. Earlier this month, the NSAC granted him more time to respond to the commission’s complaint and likely will have a formal hearing in May.

There, Silva faces the likely overturning of his win, a formal suspension and a fine.

Despite the drug-testing failures, Silva is still focused on combat-sports pursuits. In addition to wanting a Diaz rematch, MMA’s former pound-for-pound kingpin is lobbying to represent Brazil in taekwondo at the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Matt Brown says he's no longer fighting Nate Diaz at UFC 189

So, about that well-received and intriguing UFC 189 fight between Matt Brown and Nate Diaz? It appears it’s no longer happening.

Exactly a week ago, the UFC announced Brown (19-13 MMA, 12-7 UFC) and Diaz (17-10 MMA, 12-8 UFC) were slated to fight as part of an already-impressive UFC 189 lineup, a pay-per-view event that takes place July 11 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Although Diaz immediately suggested he wasn’t returning to welterweight to fight Brown – and instead would be taking on former lightweight champion Anthony Pettis – most fans wrote it off as a case of the notoriously unsatisfied Nate being Nate (via Twitter):

Nathan Diaz ✔ N @Nate Diaz209
Follow
Nah I'm fighting Pettis

However, the sometimes-lightweight/sometimes-welterweight was perhaps on to something. Late last night, Brown said the fight is off. However, he kept things civil and suggested he’s still a Diaz fan (via Twitter):

Fight against N @Nate Diaz209 isn't happening. I'll update you guys soon as I get the word on opponent/date/ thanks for the support as always!

By the way I like watching Diaz fight lw's I wish him the best of luck in the future and I'll be watching every time he fights

UFC officials haven’t made a formal announcement – and the fight is still listed on UFC.com – though it appears a mere formality at this point.

The potential loss of the fight is bad news for fight fans, who quickly delighted in the matchmaking that seemed likely to deliver a memorable fight. Although both fighters are on recent skids – Brown has lost two straight following a seven-fight winning streak that had him in contention, and Diaz is 1-3 over his past four bouts – the matchup was a hit when announced.

For now, though, it appears matchmakers will have to go back to the drawing board.

Dillashaw vs. Barao 2, Pettis vs. Jury, Tate vs. Eye set for UFC on FOX 16 in Chicago

The long-awaited rematch between UFC bantamweight champion T.J. Dillashaw (11-2 MMA, 7-2 UFC) and former champ Renan Barao (33-2 MMA, 8-1 UFC) is set for UFC on FOX 16 in Chicago.

UFC officials revealed the booking to the staff of FOX Sports’ “America’s Pregame.”

Additional contests revealed for the July 25 event at United Center include Anthony Pettis (18-3 MMA, 5-2 UFC) vs. Myles Jury (15-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) and Miesha Tate (16-5 MMA, 3-2 UFC) vs. Jessica Eye (11-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC).

Barao and Dillashaw were expected to headline next weekened’s UFC 186 event, but an injury to the champ forced the contest to be rescheduled. The delay in the Dillashaw-Barao rematch was the second time the fight has had to be postponed. Dillashaw ended Barao’s 32-fight unbeaten streak to capture the title at UFC 173 this past May in a shocking upset, and a dominant one, at that. A rematch was first booked for UFC 177 this past August, but the fight fell apart on weigh-in day when Barao suffered an injury while cutting weight.

Dillashaw remained on the card and successfully defended his title against last-minute replacement Joe Soto.

While both Jury and Pettis are looking to rebound from losses, stylistically, the fight seems like a potential barnburner.

Meanwhile, UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey in March announced the Tate vs. Eye contest.

Although Rousey said the title eliminator would take place at UFC 190, UFC President Dana White later clarified to MMAjunkie that it will take place in early summer. White initially wasn’t up to speed on the date and asked Tate, who was in attendance, for a timeframe.

Tate has won three straight since losing a rematch to Rousey at UFC 168, beating onetime title challengers Liz Carmouche and Sara McMann in addition to Rin Nakai. Eye, meanwhile, earned her first UFC win this past November with a second-round TKO of Leslie Smith. A previous win over ex-Strikeforce champ Sarah Kaufman was overturned when she tested positive for marijuana.

Photos: You're really going to want to see Conor McGregor's new tiger tattoo

“If you see the Tiger it’s too late. You’re food.”

That was the message of UFC featherweight contender Conor McGregor when he revealed his newest tattoo: a large tiger head in the middle of his stomach.

McGregor already sports a can’t-miss tattoo on his chest and neck that features a gorilla eating a heart. He’s said the piece of artwork was inspired by the logo for SBG Ireland, his team in Dublin.

One large animal tattoo apparently isn’t enough for “The Notorious,” though. He had to get another.

Take a closer look below.

McGregor (17-2 MMA, 5-0 UFC) next competes at UFC 189 on July 11 where he’ll challenge longtime featherweight champion Jose Aldo (25-1 MMA, 7-0 UFC) for the title in the main event. UFC 189 takes places at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena and airs on pay-per-view.

To hear what some of McGregor’s fellow UFC fighters think about all the madness that has surrounded his recent world media tour with Jose Aldo, check out the video below.

Conor McGregor says he would 'kill Floyd Mayweather in less than thirty seconds'

Conor McGregor isn't done with Floyd Mayweather.

McGregor already believes his UFC 189 clash with featherweight champion Jose Aldo could rival the interest of the May 2 boxing match between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao.

Now, McGregor says boxing's top draw wouldn't last 30 seconds with him.

"I don't look at a man who's expert in one area as a specialist," McGregor told Esquire. "I look at him as a rookie in ten other areas. If you can box, what happens if I grab hold of your legs? If you put me face-to-face with Floyd Mayweather-pound-for-pound boxing's best-if I fought Floyd, I would kill him in less than thirty seconds. It would take me less than thirty seconds to wrap around him like a boa constrictor and strangle him."

McGregor knows a thing or two about strangulation.

In 2010, McGregor tapped to a first-round arm triangle in a bout against recent UFC signee Joseph Duffy. He hasn't lost since.

According to McGregor, tapping so quickly to the choke remains "one of the great regrets of his life."

"That ate me alive," McGregor said. "After that, I said I was going to fight to the death. You're going to have to kill me."

Someone be sure to let Urijah Faber know.

McGregor challenges featherweight champion Jose Aldo July 11 in the main event at UFC 189 in Las Vegas, Nev.

1. The three guys in the pic look gay as fuck.

2. So what McGregor? You can put a BOXER in a choke and make him tap? And? And if it were a boxing match the same guy you would choke out would lay hands on you. Instead of worrying about Floyd worry about your match. He's getting nine figures for his fight and is undefeated. You're getting milked by White and have already been choked out. Sit your ass down, monkey.

not saying McGregor would win or even stand a chance against Mayweather in "boxing", but McGregor uses his body and arms in a way that may affect Mayweather. his hands are nice. he aint winnin tho.

regardless, a lot of mma fighters who don't stand a chance against Mayweather say the same shit, but McGregor is just on a platform right now so the media gobbles it up. A McGregor/Mayweather back and fourth would be entertaining. McGregor and Sheamus went back and fourth on twitter a while back. that was interesting.

lol Sheamus is known for getting his ass handed to him in locker room fights. Two of the funniest stories that have been confirmed by a lot of people is both Sin Cara who is 5'7" 160lbs. and Yoshi Tatsu who is 5'10 200lbs. whooped Sheamus' ass after he tried to punk them in the locker room on separate occasions.

Sheamus is basically just a big roided out meathead that don't know how to fight to save his life. Conor would destroy him.

If McGregor had the boxing talent to affect Floyd in the ring, he'd be there. McGregor always talks about he wants to be able to take care of his entire family and that's why he's fighting.

Purses from a recent card..

Danny Garcia - $1.5M
Lamont Peterson - $1.2M
Andy Lee - $500,000
Peter Quillin - $500,000

Floyd makes guys other top boxers and guys that have trained their entire life in boxing only look foolish, there's absolutely nothing McGregor is going to do in a boxing ring against Floyd but get completely clowned.

I don't knock him though, he's promoting his fight and trying to line his pockets.

i wouldn't say "he'd be there" if he could affect Floyd. McGregor has a boxing coach, but he doesn't train to be a boxer. like Floyds son. and if the money was right i wouldn't doubt if McGregor took a Floyd (boxing) fight, and lose. McGregor will probably make over 1.5 off his undeserving title shot coming up. and i don't think McGregor would fuck Floyd up what so ever. i also doubt Floyd would "fuck" him up either, but Floyd would win.

i don't even know why McGregor used the "choke" method of victory in his comment. majority of his wins are tko's. and his hands and his taekwondo are more impressive than his ground game.

Floyd isn't a fighter, he's a professional boxer.
Although, there are plenty of professional boxers who are fighters.

Put it like this, if I had to a boxer at 147\154 to have my back in a fight, Floyd would be at the bottom of my list.
