San Diego Chargers Rumors: Team May Trade Up In The Draft For Marcus Mariota

The San Diego Chargers are rumored to be making a play for Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota, a move that would require a blockbuster trade and would likely mean the end of Philip Rivers in San Diego.

This week, the Chargers brought in the Oregon quarterback for a workout. While some think the move is simply the team doing its due diligence on all the best available players, there are rumors that the team could be preparing to make a big move to the top of the draft.

As the Fansided blog, Bolt Beat, noted, the workout could point to a big move from the San Diego Chargers.

“Mariota is not expected to be available when the Chargers make their selection in the draft. If the team wants to get him, they would have to move up the draft board to make that selection. Something doesn’t seem to make sense. Teams are limited in the number of private workouts that they can have with prospects and the Chargers are using one of there workouts on Mariota.”

The report notes that there could be a good reason to make a move for Mariota. Philip Rivers will be a free agent at the end of the season, and there are no guarantees that he remains in San Diego. With the NFL now an almost entirely quarterback-driven league, the Chargers’ front office may view it as a worthwhile proposition to send whatever top draft picks or players it takes to draft Mariota and ensure a title-contending team after Rivers leaves.

The San Diego Chargers may not have to move all the way to the top of the draft. Reports indicate that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who hold the No. 1 pick this year, are planning on taking Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston.

But that doesn’t mean the Chargers will be without competition. Reports indicate that a handful of teams are very interested in the Oregon quarterback, including the Cleveland Browns.

The Browns even went so far as to hire Kevin O’Connell as their next quarterback coach. O’Connell has been working independently with Mariota, giving the Browns an inside track and exploiting a loophole that allows them to be in contact with him.

The gambit isn’t looked on too highly by other teams.

“So let me get this straight,” a high-level executive with another team told Pro Football Talk. “The Browns can have their quarterbacks coach in waiting work with a player, teach him the entire offense, etc., but we can’t even talk to any potential draft pick until the Combine per league rules? Something is wrong here.”

If the rumors regarding the San Diego Chargers and Marcus Mariota are true, then the Chargers could have more teams to compete with than just the Browns. Separate reports indicate that Chip Kelly and the Philadelphia Eagles are high on Mariota, though that may be less likely now that the Eagles traded for Sam Bradford.

Report: Cowboys agree to deal with defensive end Greg Hardy

The Dallas Cowboys have agreed to a deal with defensive end Greg Hardy.

According to NBC's Dianna Marie Russini, the 'Boys landed the dominant pass rusher they were looking for.

Hardy has been in town since Tuesday afternoon. While it was clear that COO Stephen Jones' intent was to sign Hardy on the visit, the Cowboys also used the time to get to know the pass rusher better — a dinner, overnight stay, and a Wednesday morning physical were all included.

Hardy spent five impressive seasons with the Carolina Panthers, but had off-field issues. In a May of 2014 article, the Charlotte Observer addressed Hardy's problems:

"Hardy is disruptive on the field for the Panthers – a team historically concerned about its image – but he can be similarly unsettling off the field. That leads to uncertainty in the Panthers organization about Hardy’s long-term status with the team."

In an early March article, John Machota of the Dallas Morning News believed owner/GM Jerry Jones would be open to signing Hardy, despite the troubles:

"There are some serious red flags there. But if he's willing to give the Cowboys a team-friendly deal, I wouldn't be surprised if Jerry Jones gave him a shot. Not sure there's anyone in the NFL more sympathetic than Jerry Jones when it comes to giving guys second chances."

Hardy's "second chance" won't exactly come with a clean slate. According to Cowboys insider Mike Fisher, Hardy is looking at a four-game suspension to start the 2015 NFL season.

Regardless, the Cowboys desperately needed to upgrade their pass rush this offseason and they'll get that with the signing of the "Kraken." Before sitting out last season (played in one game), Hardy collected 15 sacks in 2013 and 11 in 2012. The Ole Miss product also went to Hawaii for the Pro Bowl in 2013 while making second team All-Pro.

At 6-4, 275 lbs., Hardy gives tackles difficulty with his impressive footwork and imposing strength. And at 26 years old, he's just approaching his prime in the NFL.

There's no doubt Hardy will be a great fit for the 'Boys, the numbers don't lie. The question is, will he stay out of trouble in Dallas?

Giants to sign DE George Selvie

The New York Giants are signing free-agent defensive end George Selvie to a one-year deal for $1.4 million, a source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter on Friday.

Selvie, who started 29 out of 32 games over the last two seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, will be reunited with former USF teammate Jason Pierre-Paul. The deal includes a $200,000 signing bonus.

The Cowboys signed Selvie during training camp in 2013 after numerous injuries at the position. The 28-year-old posted a career-high seven sacks in 2013 after putting up just three in the first 36 games of his career with the St. Louis Rams, Carolina Panthers and Jacksonville Jaguars.

He had three sacks in 2014 for the Cowboys in 13 starts at left defensive end.

Selvie was also credited with 31 tackles, two tackles for loss, 20 quarterback pressures, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

Browns to sign Dwayne Bowe

Cleveland has just added a big piece to its receiving corps.

Dwayne Bowe is signing with the Browns, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network first reported and PFT has confirmed.

Bowe visited Cleveland over the weekend after he was released by the Chiefs. The 30-year-old Bowe has played his entire eight-year career in Kansas City. Last year he had 60 catches for 754 yards.

In Cleveland, Bowe should become the No. 1 target for either Josh McCown or Johnny Manziel. The Browns’ best receiver, Josh Gordon, will miss the 2015 season while he serves a suspension for violations of the league’s substance-abuse policy.

Colts add Broncos inside linebacker Nate Irving

While it doesn’t match the kind of aggressive moves they made the first few days of free agency, the Colts continue to add experienced parts.

The team announced they had signed inside linebacker Nate Irving, who spent the last four years with the Broncos.

Irving finished last year on injured reserve with a knee injury, and joins a solid group inside with D’Qwell Jackson and Jerrell Freeman.

He had also visited the Cardinals, but they apparently didn’t show the same level of interest as the Colts, who gave him a three-year deal.

Kevin Vickerson joining Jets

The Jets are reportedly adding a veteran defensive lineman.

According to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, the club has reached a deal with Kevin Vickerson.

Per multiple reports, Vickerson announced his agreement with New York on Instagram.

The 32-year-old Vickerson appeared in 15 games for the Chiefs in 2014, notching 12 tackles. He previously played for Denver (2010-2013), Tennessee (2007-2009) and Miami (2005-2006).

Vickerson (6-5, 328) could project to end in the Jets’ 3-4 scheme. He was listed as the Chiefs’ backup left end last season, and he also played end in Denver’s 3-4 scheme earlier in his career.

Blackout rule is getting squashed for 2015.

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-s...-blackout-rule-for-2015-season-184548048.html

The NFL's television blackout rule was outdated, and now we'll have a chance to see if it made any difference.

The NFL teams approved a suspension of its blackout rule, which stated that a team must sell out its stadium 72 hours before kickoff or else the game could not be broadcast in the home market, for the 2015 preseason and regular season. The NFL has had its blackout rule since 1973.

As NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said on Twitter, there were no blackouts in the 2014 regular season. Without the threat of a television blackout, the league will be able to see if it affects attendance figures. In the playoffs at the end of the 2013 season, three of the four games on wild-card weekend were in danger of not selling out with the local broadcast being blacked out, but all three games beat the blackout deadline. The teams scrambled to sell out, getting help from corporate partners.

There has been criticism of the rule for years. Last year the FCC voted to stop government approval of blackout rules, though the NFL could still enforce blackouts through its television partners. Now that there's no local television blackout threat, for this season at least, the NFL can see if there's any threat to its ticket sales at the stadium.

Ex-49er Ray McDonald gets second chance with Chicago Bears

Ray McDonald is getting a second chance.

The Chicago Bears will sign the former 49ers defensive tackle, FOX Sports 1 insider Mike Garafolo has confirmed.

McDonald was released by the 49ers on Dec. 17 after police in San Jose, Calif., began their investigation.

McDonald filed a lawsuit On March 16 against the woman who accused him of sexual assault in December, according to multiple reports.

McDonald's lawyer, Steve DeFilippis, told USA Today that he believes teams are staying away from McDonald until the case is resolved.

"His whole career is being destroyed," DeFilippis said.

"He's a phenomenal football player, and teams are interested. But there is this cloud hanging over him."

McDonald, who spent his entire eight-year career with the 49ers and accounted for 19.5 sacks during that time, was also under investigation last year for domestic violence stemming from an Aug. 31 arrest after getting into an argument with his fiancee. No charges were filed in the incident due to lack of evidence and lack of cooperation from the woman, the Santa Clara district attorney said.
