0733018001421083380_filepickerThe Haymon Takeover continues. Today it was reported that Haymon would be expanding his reach to CBS/Showtime and CBS Sports Network. Haymon has already done time buys with other networks that include NBC, Spike TV, and is also rumored to be doing deals with BET and Telemundo.

Now it appears Haymon is going to do the same with ESPN 2. ThaBoxingVoice.com was advised by a source at ESPN that the Friday Night Fights brand would be no more and for the time being be replaced by Premier Boxing Champions, the name that is given to the Haymon Boxing Series.

Normally ESPN 2 pays about $60,000 in licensing fee. With this new Haymon deal that is rumored to begin in June, Haymon will supply the money and the talent for the series. ESPN 2 last Friday Night Fights on the schedule will likely be the Boxcino 2015 Tournament final taking place on May 22nd.

According to the source at ESPN, Haymon is bringing premier fights to ESPN that would rival or be better than what he has done at Showtime, NBC, Spike TV, and CBS. The quality of fights promised by Haymon would give priority to ESPN for the best fights on paper.

This move, will likely push out the mid-level promoters who once used the ESPN platform to stay afloat. The landscape of boxing is changing, and it’s eat or be eaten. Haymon has made his moves, rest of the boxing world; it’s your move now.

Golden Boy Promotions - PortraitsSince making his pro debut back in 2012, former olympian Joseph Diaz Jr has so far had a successful career in professional boxing. The rising star known as “JoJo” has been very busy showcasing his skills on Fox Sports 1, Showtime Extreme and has been on various undercards for top billed fights.

Diaz, who is undefeated, with 14 wins and no losses is now making another major move in his young career. He will be main eventing on the return of LA Fight Club that is being promoted by Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions. The scheduled monthly boxing series that is set to debut March 6th, will showcase some of the young talent in the Los Angeles area and will be broadcasted on Fox Sports 1 and Fox Deportes.

The show which was started a few years back, and had major success, has produced fighters that have gone on to win world titles on platforms such as HBO and Showtime, and its an exciting series for boxing fans in the area who are looking to attend a remarkable event at a low cost.

“March 6th is going to be a great card. I’m excited to be the main event at LA FIGHT CLUB.”

Said Diaz, who is going to be facing the tough, Giovanni Delgado of Mexico. The fight is a scheduled 10 round bout that is set to be held at the Belasco Theater in Los Angeles. A place Diaz will definitely have the crowd on his side.

His opponent, Giovanni Delgado is coming off of a 4th round TKO of Aaron Olivares, and has an exceptional record of 15 wins with 2 losses. The only downfall here is that Delgado has been inactive since October of 2013, which will be a total of 16 months on the day of the fight. Inactivity could and most likely will play a major role in the fight, as Diaz is far more active fighting almost every 3-4 months if not sooner.

None the less, Diaz should not get confident as every fight is a tough fight and Delgado is no exception.

With his busy schedule, JoJo is certain to soon be getting a lot more competitive fights. A young talented fighter, who is working his way up the ranks. He is one of the few hot olympians that is not advised by Al Haymon, so he isn’t being detained of showing exactly what he is capable of doing in the ring. Diaz is sure to be involved in some lucrative fights. The super bantamweight division and its sister divisions have some exciting match ups awaiting, but for now, March 6th is his focus.

Premier Boxing Champions on CBS will air in conjunction with marquee SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING events as part of a partnership that will cross-promote the live programs across multiple platforms.

The first six weeks to begin this venture will feature two of the biggest names in the sport—Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., and Adonis Stevenson—and bookend this year’s most anticipated boxing event, the SHOWTIME PPV® presentation of the undisputed pound-for-pound champion Floyd Mayweather.

Each live boxing event on CBS and SHOWTIME will be supported with short- and long-form shoulder programming that will air across multiple platforms including CBS, SHOWTIME and CBS Sports Network. In addition, a significant marketing budget will be dedicated to promoting each of the live CBS broadcasts and each major SHOWTIME telecast with targeted advertising campaigns.

The schedule of upcoming live boxing events on CBS and SHOWTIME is as follows:

SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING
On Saturday, March 28, SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING will present a doubleheader featuring a featherweight showdown between WBC champion Jhonny Gonzalez and top contender Gary Russell Jr., and a matchup of 154-pound contenders Jermell Charlo and Vanes Martirosyan. The live SHOWTIME telecast will preview the following week’s April 4 CBS debut of Premier Boxing Champions.

PREMIERE BOXING CHAMPIONS ON CBS
The CBS premiere on Saturday, April 4 (3 p.m. ET/Noon PT) will feature light heavyweight world champion Adonis Stevenson defending his WBC title against former super middleweight champ Sakio Bika. In the co-feature, undefeated light heavyweight contender Artur Beterbiev will face veteran former world champ Gabriel Campillo. The CBS broadcast, with its national reach of more than 110 million households, will offer a broad platform to promote a major SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING event just two weeks later.

SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING
On Saturday, April 18, SHOWTIME presents the network debut of former world champion and Mexican superstar Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., as he takes on light heavyweight contender Andrzej Fonfara.

PREMIERE BOXING CHAMPIONS ON CBS
On Saturday, May 9 Premier Boxing Champions returns to CBS for the second installment (4:30 p.m. ET/1:30 p.m. PT). This broadcast will pit undefeated Omar Figueroa, who recently vacated his Lightweight World Championship to move up in weight to 140 pounds, against former champion Ricky Burns.

The April 18 SHOWTIME telecast and the May 9 CBS broadcast will support—and be supported by—the May 2 SHOWTIME PPV event featuring the undefeated, world’s No. 1 ranked fighter, Floyd Mayweather.

Additional confirmed dates for Premier Boxing Champions on CBS include live broadcasts in June, July and September, with up to three remaining events on the 2015 calendar yet to be announced. The live boxing broadcasts on CBS, other than the aforementioned premiere, will be broadcast live at 4:30 p.m. ET/1:30 p.m. PT.

The Premier Boxing Champions series was created for television by Haymon Sports. It is the first consistent series presentation of live boxing on CBS in 15 years. The network aired a one-off live event featuring current WBC Super Bantamweight Champion Leo Santa Cruz in 2012. Prior to that, the last live boxing on the network was in 1997 when then-middleweight champion Bernard Hopkins knocked out Glen Johnson.

Live boxing was a staple on the network in the 1980s, consistently featuring future Hall of Famers Sugar Ray Leonard, Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini and others. Boxing’s history on CBS dates back to 1948 when the Pabst Blue Ribbon Bouts premiered featuring legendary blow-by-blow commentator Russ Hodges.

I'm happy Haymon is bringing boxing too all these networks, but I wish he would have left ESPN alone. It's a great place for the small time promoters/managers/fighters to break into the game. Now it's just limited to Haymon fighters so it's gonna be real difficult for these guys to break through.

What is Haymons end game here? I don't think he could sustain putting on cards on all these networks since its coming out of pocket, so after a year or two, assuming good ratings and lots of buzz, is he going to have a bidding war for his PBC fighters? Trying to strike gold like that big Fox UFC deal a few years back?

I'm happy to see all these good cards he's making, especially the ones on network TV. I always enjoyed ESPN FNF's and it sucks he's getting into that, but hopefully that just creates the need for some other venue for that type of fights and it gets done.

I'm honestly not attached to FNF to be honest as long as another company picks up smaller cards I think I'll be fine. ESPN was actually gonna scrap FNF a few years back (around the time when they scrapped WNF) and ended up sticking with it, so I was ready to lose it then. And if this gets Teddy Atlas away from commentating then even better.

I don't think I'm really trying to spin anything. This could open the door for Fox or BeIN's english channel to create a weekly boxing show to open the door for smaller shows. There's obviously a market for it and a lot these sports channels would love to be able to get their hands on guaranteed live content.

You saw how quick BeIN was to snatch up IMP's broadcast before they disbanded.

Also I don't really agree about guys like Ruslan not happening without ESPN. Maidana was fighting on random German shows before he got his shot on HBO and had just lost a close decision to Kotelnik, Golovkin made his name abroad before he was picked up. I don't see why Ruslan couldn't have made his bones in Russia and then got a chance.

BKB April 4 Card (Rosado-Stevens)

Today DIRECTV announced the main event matchup, and majority of its fight card for the second BKB (Big Knockout Boxing) event at Mandalay Bay on April 4th. The event will be headlined by BKB middleweight champ Gabe Rosado defending his title against New York middleweight slugger Curtis Stevens, and it will be broadcast via national PPV across all cable and satellite providers.

Other fights include:
Jesus Soto Karass vs. Ed Paredes (jr moiddleweight)
David Estrada vs. Khurshid Abdullaev (jr middleweight)
Anthony Johnson vs. Joe Montoya (cruiserweight)
Javier Garcia vs. Jonathan Chicas (welterweight)
Herbert Acevedo vs. William Hutchinson (jr welterweight)
Gabe Duluc vs. Antonio Canas (jr welterweight)
Julian Pollard vs. Elijah McCall (heavyweight)


It was also announced that BKB will be the first to use an in-glove technology capturing fighters real time data allowing television viewers to see the force of a punch, velocity of a punch and other data enhancing the television viewing experience.
A similar technology was actually publicized in 2012 and was touted as “the future of boxing.” Ironically, it never ended up being put in play by HBO. Now BKB has developed what it believes is a superior system of this glove-based digital technology, and it will be the first professional boxing organization to utilize the technology within the national broadcast of the event on April 4th.

This technology was approved for use by the Nevada Athletic Commission in its meeting this week.

If and when that time comes then great. until then it sucks because there are no outlets for the small time fighters/promoters. Haymon has everything on lock, Golden Boy has Fox sports, and HBO is for the bigger names. Friday Night Fights was great for the small time guys.

He definitely was an FNF regular. I don't think it's impossible to say he wouldn't have made to where he's at considering his fan friendly style and the fact that there's example of guys that never fought on FNF that made it to the main stage without much US fanfare. I think it's impossible to say that he wouldn't have been able to make it without FNF.

Just because that's the avenue he took to where he's at doesn't mean it's the only way for him to get there.
