Yall remember the first season of the Contender? That was a cool show. It had the likes of Sergio Mora who I think won it all. Also had Alfonzo Gomez, Ishe Smith etc... when those guys were nobodies. I picked Ishe to win it all and he let me down lol. Got Em!!

I'll probably end up going to that Taylor/Mora card. It's gonna be at the Beau Rivage in Biloxi.

Eight years ago, then-undisputed middleweight champion Jermain Taylor was supposed to defend the title against Sergio Mora, who had made his name as the winner of "The Contender" reality series.

The fight was supposed to take place on May 19, 2007 at the FedEx Forum in Memphis, but Mora shocked everyone by passing on the fight -- and a roughly $1 million payday -- because he did not want to fight in Memphis, believing its proximity (about two hours) to Taylor's hometown of Little Rock, Arkansas, would have somehow given Taylor an unfair advantage. Taylor eventually defended against former welterweight and junior middleweight titleholder Cory Spinks instead and Mora was buried for years by criticism of his decision, one he later said he regretted.

Now, all these years later, they will finally meet as Taylor will make the first defense of his newly-acquired middleweight belt against Mora on Feb. 6 in the main event on ESPN2's "Friday Night Fights."

Lou DiBella, who promotes both fighters, told ESPN.com on Saturday that the fight has been agreed to by both sides and that it will take place at the Beau Rivage Resort & Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi, the same venue where Taylor scored four knockdowns and won a unanimous decision against Australia's Sam Soliman on Oct. 8 to win back one of the belts he had once held.

According to the IBF, whose title Taylor holds, the signed contracts are due to the organization by Jan. 17. The IBF also said that Taylor is allowed to face Mora in an optional defense as long as it is completed by Feb. 8, with the Taylor-Mora winner obligated to next face mandatory challenger Hassan N'Dam (31-1, 18 KOs), a former titleholder.

"It's a quality fight and it gives Jermain a chance to defend his title before his mandatory defense is due," DiBella said. "And for Sergio Mora, it's the opportunity of a lifetime. He turned it down once many years ago when it was a much bigger fight and for a lot more money. But he passed on it then and I think it's one of the great regrets that he has had. He said if he ever got the opportunity again it's something he would want to do. This is a fight that both guys wanted."

Taylor will go into the fight facing serious legal problems -- as he did going into the fight with Soliman -- stemming from an incident that took place inside his home on Aug. 26, when he allegedly shot his cousin Tyrone DaWayne Hinton multiple times and also fired a gun (but missed) another person during some sort of altercation.

Hinton survived and Taylor, out on bail, received permission from the court in order to travel to Florida to train for the fight with Soliman as well as to Biloxi for the bout. In November, Taylor was charged with first-degree battery and first-degree terroristic threatening and faces up to 26 years in prison if convicted.

The 36-year-old Taylor (33-4-1, 20 KOs) will train for the fight against Mora in Little Rock. Pat Burns, Taylor's trainer, told ESPN.com that Taylor has been doing strength and conditioning work and that he will arrive in Little Rock for the boxing part of the training camp on Tuesday expecting Taylor to be focused on Mora as he was for the fight against Soliman, despite the legal issues.

"We know Mora is a tough fighter and we're going in there as if we were fighting Bernard Hopkins," Burns said of the legend Taylor defeated twice in 2005, including to win the undisputed title in their first fight. "You have to have that mind set or you'll get your ass kicked. Jermain will do his work. The rest is up to the courts. But we will be focused on the task in front of us and that is the fight. When it's time to focus on his legal situation he will.

"In terms of boxing, Jermain still has excellent speed and speed kills, and his jab was tremendous against Soliman and his right hand looked good, his balance looked good and his defense looked good. Mora is a tough guy, but Jermain is still pretty darn sharp."

Taylor will be fighting for the sixth time since coming back in December 2011 amid the controversy of being re-licensed after a 26-month layoff following the brain bleed he suffered in a brutal 12th-round knockout loss to Arthur Abraham in Berlin in the opening stage of the Super Six World Boxing Classic in October 2009.

After Taylor decided to fight again, he passed a battery of neurological tests administered by some of the world's top doctors from the Mayo Clinic to the Cleveland Clinic. With all of his tests normal and medical professionals saying that he was at no greater risk of injury than any other fighter, the Nevada State Athletic Commission - which has some of the most rigorous licensing standards in boxing -- gave him a license.

The Feb. 6 fight won't be the first time Taylor and Mora will face each other in the ring. Taylor won a 12-3 decision against Mora in the 156-pound division at the 2000 Olympic trials. Taylor went on to claim an Olympic bronze medal at the Sydney Games.

Although Mora (27-3-2, 9 KOs), 34, of Los Angeles, passed on facing Taylor in 2007, he went on to outpoint the late Vernon Forrest in June 2008 to win a junior middleweight world title, becoming the first fighter from "The Contender" to win a world title, although Forrest reclaimed the belt by outpointing a weight-drained Mora in the rematch three months later.

Mora, who recently signed with adviser Al Haymon, who has worked with Taylor for most of his career, has won four fights in a row.

"I think Sergio believes he has a great chance to win the fight and I thought Jermain fought very well against Soliman and has looked good in his recent fights, but the odds makers will have it closer now than they would have had it in the heyday of Jermain's career," DiBella said.

"Sergio left a lot of money and a huge opportunity on the table back then but things have come full circle."

I saw a commercial for some boxing shit on NBC during the Steelers and Ravens game did anyone catch it?

And by "it" I mean the commercial.

I wonder if this is the Al Haymon deal...

I wonder if Floyd actually doesn't retire after the next two fights and fights Pac in his last fight...on NBC...

It was an Al Haymon commercial. For his NBC deal or whatever. I think it said "The next great era begins". It showed a lot of Klitschko for some reason, who obviously isn't with Haymon and his next two fights will be on HBO, but maybe it's referring to Deontay Wilder as being the next great.

But I'll say this right now there is ZERO chance of Pacquiao vs Mayweather on NBC. You're talking about close to a $200,000,000 purse. You can't generate that kind of cash anywhere without PPV revenue.

There would have to be some INSANE advertising fees for them to make that kinda money, but it's not impossible to make that off of what is essentially the Super Bowl of boxing. Problem is, it's 48 minutes of a fight that people would really tune in for. They'd have to make it a giant spectacle and have tons of commercials.

The UFC has made it work and puts on what would be PPV quality cards on network tv. With the current trend of struggling PPV's, there could be some sort of precedent to put it on network tv. Will it happen? Highly doubtful, obviously. Would I be totally shocked if it did? No, virtually everyone would be watching it I would think.

Remember when Tyson fought a scrub on Fox back in like 1994? I don't think I knew a single person who didn't watch that fight man. I mean literally, every person I knew watched it.

The UFC can't really be compared to big boxing cards. Mayweather's purse alone could probably fund every fighter for 9 months out of the year if not the entire year, much less his opponents.

It's the same concept with the Super Bowl. There's players with huge contracts but everyone gets the same amount to play the Super Bowl, which isn't much in comparison, unless they have a clause for more money if they get there.

The purses for a Mayweather/Pacquiao single event + all the costs just to put the event on would be way too much for regular TV to recoup costs. Also keep in mind it's only 1 minute in between rounds, there's no TV timeouts here. Why would any advertiser pay big money for a slot during an undercard fight or during pre/post fight commentary?

That Tyson fight you're talking about was against Buster Mathis and it came with a ton of circumstances. It was right after Tyson was released from prison and had that huge PPV against McNeely where McNeely got crushed in the first round then DQ'd cause his cornerman ran into the ring. That was more of a fight made from circumstance then King wanting to put Tyson on free TV.

The highest payout in UFC history would probably be 1/20th of the payout of a Mayweather Pacquiao card.

The UFC generally doesn't put Pay Per View draws on Fox either. They did it one time with the first Cain and Junior dos Santos fight and that show ended in disaster.

The UFC usually puts Champions or number one contenders who can't sell PPV's and don't have high guaranteed pay days on Fox.

Oscar De La Hoya eyes Danny Garcia-Lamont Peterson in 2015
January 4, 2015
Tweet

A showdown between RING junior welterweight champion Danny Garcia and IBF beltholder Lamont Peterson will happen in early 2015, if Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya gets his way.

“I will push for Garcia vs. Peterson for the first quarter of the year,” De La Hoya told RingTV.com, adding that he has had ongoing discussions with adviser Al Haymon regarding Garcia-Peterson, calling it, “the next fight that I want to make.”

De La Hoya has promoted many of the fighters in the all-star stable of Haymon, including Garcia (29-0, 17 knockouts) and Peterson (33-2-1, 17 KOs), who scored knockouts in their last fights on the same card in August at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Garcia, 26, of Philadelphia, scored three knockdowns en route to his second-round stoppage of Rod Salka and Peterson, 30, of Washington, D.C., handled Edgar Santana on the way to a 10th-round technical knockout.

In addition to RING 147 and 154-pound champion Floyd Mayweather Jr., Haymon’s other fighters in and around the 140-pound division include Amir Khan, Marcos Maidana, Keith Thurman, Adrien Broner, Lucas Matthysse and Robert Guerrero.

Haymon also has three-division title winner Abner Mares, who is competing in the featherweight division, and heavyweight Deontay Wilder, who will challenge WBC beltholder Bermane Stiverne on Jan. 17 on Showtime.

Named Promoter of The Year for 2014 by Sport Illustrated, De La Hoya has expressed interested in a bout between Mares and two-division titleholder Leo Santa Cruz, who has a Jan. 17 defense against Jesus Ruiz.

“I’m working on some exciting fights, and that includes Mares, Thurman, Lucas, Broner, Guerrero,” said De La Hoya. “I am looking forward to promoting the next American heavyweight hope, Deontay Wilder.”

Canelo Alvarez to Miguel Cotto: ‘A Puerto Rican never ducked a Mexican fighter’
January 1, 2015

Former junior middleweight champ Canelo Alvarez has challenged Miguel Cotto to accept a May 2 fight against him, daring THE RING middleweight champ not “to duck a fighter who defeated his brother.”

Having debuted in Las Vegas with a ninth-round knockout over Cotto’s older sibling, Jose Miguel Cotto, in May 2010, Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 knockouts) agreed to his side of the terms on Dec. 9 for a bout against Cotto, according to Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya.

The bout would appear on HBO Pay Per View on the Mexican holiday weekend of Cinco de Mayo, and is being targeted for San Antonio, Dallas, Las Vegas or New York.

“I don’t understand what’s happening,” said Alvarez, 24, in a statement issued to Spanish media members, a translation of which was obtained by RingTV.com.

“I already granted Miguel Cotto a lot of things to make this fight happen. It’s been more than a month, and Miguel Cotto hasn’t signed the contract.”

But Cotto’s adviser, Gaby Penagaricano, declared during a Dec. 29 interview with RingTV.com that the negotiations were only “50 percent,” complete, hinting that other options for Puerto Rico’s first four-division title winner include a rematch with Floyd Mayweather Jr.

“There’s no deal as of yet. Whether it’s going to happen or not, honestly, I don’t know but we’re talking,” said Penagaricano earlier this week. “The reference to 50 percent only means that the most important elements of the deal – the financial element – there’s no agreement as to that yet. So it can not be more than 50 percent done. The most important factor of the overall equation is not agreed upon.”

Alvarez is coming off a split-decision victory over Erislandy Lara in July. Prior to Lara, the Mexican star scored a 10th-round stoppage of Alfredo Angulo that helped him to rebound from his majority-decision loss to Mayweather in September 2013.

The 34-year-old Cotto (39-4, 31 KOs) was last in the ring for his 10th-round technical knockout of Sergio Martinez in June that had followed his third-round knockout of Delvin Rodriguez in October 2013.

Before facing Rodriguez, Cotto had suffered consecutive unanimous decision losses to Mayweather in May 2012 and Trout in December 2012. Trout lost his next fight by unanimous decision to Alvarez, being floored in the seventh round in April 2013.

“If he doesn’t take this fight, he will pass down in history unlike anybody else if he were to duck a fighter who defeated his brother,” said Alvarez, who is rated No. 1 at 154 pounds by THE RING, behind RING champ Mayweather.

“Miguel Cotto has to decide whether or not he wants to fight me. I’m not going to wait much longer. I’ll let him make his decision. Hopefully, his decision won’t hurt his country and all of the fans that want this fight.”

Cotto-Alvarez could be a monster event given that Alvarez’s loss to Mayweather grossed a record $150 million, and Cotto is widely considered the most lucrative pay-per-view attraction in boxing behind Mayweather and Pacquiao.

Prior to his loss to Mayweather Jr., Alvarez’s victory over the previously unbeaten Trout drew nearly 40,000 to The Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

De La Hoya has called a match between Cotto and Alvarez “very important toward possibly seeing the pugilistic rivalry between Mexico and Puerto Rico once again,” adding, “It would be Salvador [Sanchez] vs. [Wilfredo] Gomez, [Julio Cesar] Chavez Sr. vs [Edwin] Rosario, [Oscar] De La Hoya vs. [Felix] Trinidad. Huge!”

“A Puerto Rican never ducked a Mexican fighter. Nor did a Mexican ever duck a Puerto Rican fighter. This is a classic fight for the fans. I talked with my promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, and he confirmed to me that I’m fighting on May 2, 2015,” said Alvarez.

“Miguel Cotto is at the top of my list, and I had a lot of options. But I’m considerate of all the fans in the world. I know the fans want me to fight someone big like Miguel Cotto, especially the fans in Puerto Rico.”

Adviser: Manny Pacquiao being updated on Floyd Mayweather Jr. talks
December 31, 2014

Manny Pacquiao was updated this morning on ongoing negotiations for a potential May 2 bout with Floyd Mayweather Jr., according to Pacquiao’s adviser Michael Koncz.

“We’re still in negotiations with Floyd’s group through Top Rank. I spoke to Manny this morning. I gave Manny what is perceived to be a counter offer from the Mayweather people,” said Koncz, who then referred to Top Rank CEO Bob Arum.

“We discussed it and now I’ve given instruction to Bob to counter their counter. We’ve been going back and forth. Bob has been negotiating with the powers that be on Floyd’s side for the past couple of weeks. There’s been offers and counter offers, and a couple of days ago Bob called me and gave me allegedly where Floyd’s side is, and I discussed that with Manny two hours ago.

“Now I’ve given Bob our response to that. I’m never overly optimistic until the contract is signed, but the good thing is that we’re still going back and forth.”

During an interview on Showtime on Dec. 12, Mayweather said that he “would love to fight Manny Pacquiao” on May 2. Click here for Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s full video interview with Steve Farhood

“Mayweather can get the amount he wants,” Pacquiao responded on Dec. 16. “Money is not the issue in our fight.”

On Wednesday, Pacquiao delivered a final word for 2014 to Mayweather on his Twitter account.

“The ball will drop at midnight to usher in 2015,” read Pacquiao’s message. “@Floyd Mayweather, let’s not not drop the ball on fighting each other next year! #LetsMakeFistory.”

Mayweather is currently aligned with Showtime, having fought four of six bouts stipulated by a multimillion-dollar agreement he signed with the network and its parent company, CBS Corporation.

Officials from Showtime and HBO, the latter of which has televised most of Pacquiao’s fights, have reportedly discussed a joint venture between the networks similar to that which facilitated the fight between Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson in June 2002.

Lewis scored an eighth-round stoppage victory over Tyson in the bout. Lewis and Tyson were affiliated with HBO and Showtime, respectively, at the time. Key aides are reportedly working for Mayweather and Pacquiao, with CBS Corporation Chief Executive Leslie Moonves bringing the two sides together.

I know that I’m the only guy that can beat Sergey Kovalev"
December 16, 2014

Adonis Stevenson (24-1, 20KO's) WBC light heavyweight champion signed with Al Haymon and made the jump to Showtime from HBO earlier this year has insisted that he is the only guy that can beat IBF/WBA/WBO light Heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev. “Nothing is easy,” said Stevenson, “but I know that I’m the only guy that can beat Sergey Kovalev. I will fight him in 2015.”

Stevenson is set to take on Russian Dmitry Sukhotsky (22-2, 16 KOs) this Saturday in Quebec City in a 12 round Championship fight. Stevenson was appearing to the public that he was ducking top competition fights. Jean Pascal has been saying he's been trying to get a deal done with Stevenson for six months and also called him "Aducknis Chickenson."

“I told Pascal that he was only a contender and he only deserved 30 percent and that’s why the fight didn’t happen, said Stevenson. "So he went with Kovalev because maybe he’s going to get more out of him. But I mean, look at Kovalev. He’s a world champion and he’s got three titles but I bet that he’s only making about $500,000 a fight. Come on, man.”

bob-arum-boxing-promoterjpg-ff7506fe1252e584While the date and the two super fights between Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto-Canelo Alvarez are still being negotiated, Bob Arum, the promoter of Pacquiao delivered some news to the media that there is movement with the Mayweather talks.

“The talks are slow but at least there is movement,” Arum told Philboxing.com.

When asked as to why the movement in the talks were slow Arum replied, “It’s always about money.”

Seemingly there have been multiple road blocks in having the richest fight in boxing signed, sealed, and delivered. However Arum is optimistic but not too optimistic.

“Until a deal is made and contracts signed, we’ll never know,” Arum said regarding if he feels the fight will actually happen.

In the report, Pacquiao’s advisor told The Manila Standard that there is nothing new to report. So while the world awaits like it did for several years, the negotiations or non-negotiations continue. Stay tuned.
