(02-21) 07:43 PST SAN JOSE -- A man was shot and killed in east San Jose by a homeowner who said he opened fire in self-defense during a burglary attempt, police said Friday.
The incident was reported at a home on the 3500 block of Pine Ridge Way about 8 p.m. Thursday.
The homeowner, whose name was withheld, said someone fired shots into his home while trying to break in, prompting the homeowner to return fire, police said.
A car left the scene and wasn't found by officers, but police were then notified that a man in his 20s with at least one gunshot wound had been dropped off at Regional Medical Center of San Jose by people in a vehicle. The wounded man was pronounced dead, and officers detained several people at the hospital.
Police were trying to determine whether the shooting was linked to a confrontation that was reported on Aetna Way, about 5 miles away.
