A paragraph or two before the excerpt in the article that is from even an entire different source states that UNODC grossly underestimated figures, which would equate to UNODC taking a "grossly" conservative approach to their figures. The professor also continued to say, "There is no evidence that a large percentage of opium production is no longer processed into heroin as claimed by the UN." The key to this debate is that the excerpt you provided from the UN was in 2010, the figure I provided from UNODC was from 2013, which means they changed their tune 3 years later from what you quoted.

Funny you blame doctors and pharmacies, not all heroin users and addicts moved from prescription drugs to heroin. Doctors and pharmacies are not hitting the fields in Afghanistan. Yes, heroin is much cheaper than prescription meds. Yes, heroin is much cheaper than having to visit a doc to get scrips. That is all common sense. Prescription med abuse is a much larger population than the other. Again, common sense.
