Man says Fort Pierce cops weighed his cocaine wrong, says he knows 'because that's what he does for a living' - Off the Beat with Will Greenlee
As a Fort Pierce police officer weighed crack cocaine and pills recovered from a man arrested at Walmart, the man yelled that the officer was weighing the drugs all wrong.
ames_forrest_lee_mug.jpgThe man, Forrest Lee Ames, said "the reason he knew how to separate/weigh crack cocaine and pills is because that's what he does for a living," according to recently released police records.
Police encountered Ames, 30, on Aug. 11 at a Walmart in Fort Pierce on Okeechobee Road.
An officer had been watching a man and woman pilfering items via surveillance video.
The woman, 25-year-old Kelly Fitzgerald, swiped a bunch of bras and clothes for kids, while Ames took a bottle of lemon juice and headed into the bathroom. He came out holding a needle and lemon juice, which can be used to "cut" cocaine or heroin for intravenous use.
Ames and Fitzgerald eventually were stopped.
Police recovered crack cocaine and dozens of pills from Ames. Fitzgerald wore two bras from Walmart and had two more in her purse as well as clothes for children.
Both were arrested.
"While weighing the narcotics on a scale at the county jail, Ames yelled from the back of my patrol car that I was doing it wrong. Ames told me . . . that I needed to press the scale button to grams," a report states. "Ames told me that the reason he knew how to separate/weigh crack cocaine and pills is because that's what he does for a living."
fitzgerald_kelly_mug.JPGCareer paths involving crack cocaine generally are frowned upon by law enforcement.
Ames, of West Palm Beach, was arrested on at least six drug-related charges and a single retail theft charge.
Fitzgerald, of Port St. Lucie, was arrested on misdemeanor theft and resist officer related charges
