OAKLAND, Calif. —
A one-year-old baby boy and his 20-year-old father were fatally shot inside a residence in East Oakland early Wednesday morning, according to police.
Police responded to the double shooting in the 400 block of Ghormley Avenue, near 98th Avenue, at about 2:46 a.m. Investigators said the gunman crept into the backyard and fired the fatal shoots through a window.
A neighbor told police they heard 6-8 shots.
The one-year-old boy, who family members identified as Andrew "Drew" Jackson, was pronounced dead at the hospital. His father was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
KTVU spoke with the Drew's aunt, Margaret Carroll, who said that no mother should have to bury her baby.
"He was a jolly baby. He really liked to play outside with animals and play with his sister," said Carroll.
No suspects were in custody and the shooting remained under investigation Wednesday, police said.
Investigators said they believe that the father was the intended target, according to Johnna Watson, Oakland Police Department's public information officer.
The father was reportedly visiting from Fresno to attend a funeral for a friend and sleeping in the same room as his son at the time of the shooting.
Other people were in the house during the shooting but no one else was injured, according to Watson.
The identity of the father had not been officially released by later Wednesday morning but according to social media, his name was Andrew Thomas.
