Sad New Details Emerge Around James Gandolfini's Death - Yahoo! TV
The New Jersey-born actor was in his hotel room at the Boscolo Exedra Roma when he became ill at about 10 p.m. local time. Antonio D'Amore, a spokesperson for the five-star hotel, told the "Today" show that the star's son called the reception desk to summon help upon discovering his father in the bathroom after he had apparently suffered a heart attack.
When hotel personnel arrived, Gandolfini was on the bathroom floor with his son by his side, and he was still alive, D'Amore said. Efforts to resuscitate Gandolfini were made and continued as he was driven to the nearby Policlinico Umberto I Hospital.
"Heart attacks which occur during defecation are, in many cases, the result of using
the (unnatural) sitting posture for waste elimination.
"Excessive straining, through the use of repeated Valsalva Maneuvers, is needed for
emptying the bowels in the sitting position. The Valsalva Maneuver adversely affects
the cardio-vascular system, and can cause fainting and death.
"The cardio-vascular system of a healthy man can cope with intensive and repeated
straining on a sitting toilet. But with a weakened vascular system, straining on a sitting
toilet may result in fainting or even death.
"By squatting for waste elimination, the straining required, if any, is much reduced,
which would help prevent many of these tragic (heart attack) cases."
