March Against Monsanto

On May 25, activists around the world will unite to March Against Monsanto.

Why do we march?

Research studies have shown that Monsanto’s genetically-modified foods can lead to serious health conditions such as the development of cancer tumors, infertility and birth defects.

In the United States, the FDA, the agency tasked with ensuring food safety for the population, is steered by ex-Monsanto executives, and we feel that’s a questionable conflict of interests and explains the lack of government-led research on the long-term effects of GM products.

Recently, the U.S. Congress and president collectively passed the nicknamed “Monsanto Protection Act” that, among other things, bans courts from halting the sale of Monsanto’s genetically-modified seeds.

For too long, Monsanto has been the benefactor of corporate subsidies and political favoritism. Organic and small farmers suffer losses while Monsanto continues to forge its monopoly over the world’s food supply, including exclusive patenting rights over seeds and genetic makeup.

Monsanto's GM seeds are harmful to the environment; for example, scientists have indicated they have contributed to Colony Collapse Disorder among the world's bee population.

What are solutions we advocate?

Voting with your dollar by buying organic and boycotting Monsanto-owned companies that use GMOs in their products.

Labeling of GMOs so that consumers can make those informed decisions easier.

Repealing relevant provisions of the US's "Monsanto Protection Act."

Calling for further scientific research on the health effects of GMOs.

Holding Monsanto executives and Monsanto-supporting politicians accountable through direct communication, grassroots journalism, social media, etc.

Continuing to inform the public about Monsanto's secrets.

Taking to the streets to show the world and Monsanto that we won't take these injustices quietly.

We will not stand for cronyism. We will not stand for poison. That’s why we March Against Monsanto.

i'm cool off marching, I got better shit to do then "protest" something that won't change in this country, our politicians make way too much money off monsanto for anything to change

what I will do is continue to purchase all of my vegetables and other groceries from organic food stores such as Sprouts and Whole Foods, best thing you can really do in this situation is not aid in lining their pockets

The first paragraph you expressed is all quitter chat. Scurred of some pocket lining politicians now a days? You can not expect change if you do not go out and do something about it. "A people UNITED-> Will Never Be Divided !"
And yes, going to organic stores is a start. But if your not gonna stand up against the power -> you might as well get out of the way for people who do..

'' Are americans pussy whiped? So far iceland smashed on there crooked bankers and made all banks national, put the bankers in jail-done deal"

Hungary - Hungary has taken a bold stand against biotech giant Monsanto and genetic modification by destroying 1000 acres of maize found to have been grown with genetically modified seeds, according to Hungary deputy state secretary of the Ministry of Rural Development Lajos Bognar. Unlike many European Union countries, Hungary is a nation where genetically modified (GM) seeds are banned. In a similar stance against GM ingredients, Peru has also passed a 10 year ban on GM foods.

Planetsave reports:

Almost 1000 acres of maize found to have been ground with genetically modified seeds have been destroyed throughout Hungary, deputy state secretary of the Ministry of Rural Development Lajos Bognar said. The GMO maize has been ploughed under, said Lajos Bognar, but pollen has not spread from the maize, he added.

Unlike several EU members, GMO seeds are banned in Hungary. The checks will continue despite the fact that seek traders are obliged to make sure that their products are GMO free, Bognar said.

During the invesigation, controllers have found Pioneer Monsanto products among the seeds planted.

The free movement of goods within the EU means that authorities will not investigate how the seeds arrived in Hungary, but they will check where the goods can be found, Bognar said. Regional public radio reported that the two biggest international seed producing companies are affected in the matter and GMO seeds could have been sown on up to the thousands of hectares in the country. Most of the local farmers have complained since they just discovered they were using GMO seeds.

With season already under way, it is too late to sow new seeds, so this year’s harvest has been lost.

And to make things even worse for the farmers, the company that distributed the seeds in Baranya county is under liquidation. Therefore, if any compensation is paid by the international seed producers, the money will be paid primarily to that company’s creditors, rather than the farmers.

Why do protestors always have to be related with 'hippies''? Lets break it down. Besides the no shower or grooming, they have marched against war, racism, and showed there stance on mind altering substances. Hippies were about love and making love. Whats wrong with that?
And statistics have shown that protests do solve problems. Was Martin Luther Kings protests in vain? Was Mahatma Gandhi's protests all for nothings? When Rosa Parks did not comply with sitting in the back of the buss not demand protests that changed the way people minds worked? And we can not forget about Cesar Chavez and the UFW..... Smoke me out

Never said there was anything wrong with hippies, I asked what marching with them is going to do to help your cause.

You bring up examples of marching that are 50+ years old, give me an example closer to our 2013 corporate paid for government where something as simple as a march altered anything our country or government did.

The best weapon we have against Monsanto is education. Teach people at your job or school. Unfortunately 99% of American citizens live in hypnosis. Give them their Iphones, big screen tv's, reality shows and shove McDonalds down their throats and they're happy people completely oblivious to what goes on around them or in the world.

A recent example of educating people on this subject from me personally. I go to film school, in one of my classes our project was to make a 5-10 minute documentary, a couple of the people in the class were having problems coming up with an idea so I brought up Monsanto and GMO's, not one person in that classroom knew what I was talking about so I spent the next 20 minutes educating them on the poison they consume.

Educate people in your inner circle, at your work, at your school then they in turn will educate people in their inner circle, at their work, and their school. The more actual education spreads the less money goes into Monsanto's pocket.

The problems I see with marches and protests is generally people will forget what they saw the very next day. People on the street might see your sign that says "Down with Monsanto" but they won't know what that means and by the time they get home it's more than likely out of their brain to even google it.

Take a survey of 100 random people on the street and ask them if they know what Monsanto is, will you even get 1 out of every 10?

IMO the best weapon that exists in this fight is education, that's why for me personally a march is a waste of my time. You're more than welcome to march homie, but in my personal life and personal opinion it would be a waste of my time.

Although education is a great tool. Its not the only tool. Awareness is partly due to protests. Im not knocking educating people. And im not dissing protesting. This thread was for people who dont mind walking or protesting out GMO and monsanto and do mind all the B.S. gmo in our foods. Not for some half stepping activism preach
