Fernando Guerrero. It's a decent fight but Guerrero has fought nothing but bums since being KOd by Grady Brewer. Golovkin is a champion. I don't know why he would turn down more money and belts for Guerrero.

Vazquez would fight broner. Vazquez actually said they tried to fight Broner but it was turned down:

I spoke to manager Richard Mota yesterday (while visiting the Azteca Boxing Club, where Vazquez trains). Mota, who works with Vazquez, told me that Golden Boy Promotions offered the IBF titleholder a fight with Broner, which they readily accepted. However, Broner’s management (Al Haymon & Co.) turned the fight down, says Mota. source

Abril would too but he's set to fight Sharif Bogere for the vacant WBA title. 135 is whack though anyways.

yeah I Broner is fighting Gavin Rees on that card.

The Quillin-Guerrero fight is on the same card as Danny Garcia vs Judah on Feb 9th on Showtime.

See the thing is, he's getting Showtime undercard money instead of main event HBO money. HBO was highly interested and would have spent millions on it.

Also, Quillin owns the WBO belt and Golvokin owns the WBA & IBO belts. It would be a unification bout and absolutely would cement the best fighter at 160 besides the lineal Champ Sergio Martinez. The winner undoubtedly would be the legit contender for Sergio. Dumb move imo.

Marquez Offered $15 Million Dollars To Face Marali

By Rene Umanzor
According to trainer/manager Ignacio "Nacho" Beristain, a rich prince in Dubai has put together a written offer of $15 million dollars to see Juan Manuel Marquez face the junior welterweight champion of the World Boxing Federation (WBF), Zolani Marali (22-5, 13 KO's) of South Africa. Marquez is being lined up to return in the month on April, in a tuneup for a fifth fight with Manny Pacquiao in September.
Nacho says despite the big offer for a fight in Dubai, promoters Bob Arum of Top Rank and Fernando Beltran of Zanfer are at the head of the line to stage Marquez's next fight.
"At a function in Morelia, the president of the WBF (Howard Goldberg), an association that works more in Europe and Africa, was told me to tell me that a prince was interested in Juan and sent a written proposal to face Zolani Marali," Nacho said. "It has a formal offer of $15 million to fight in Dubai, but Bob Arum and Fernando Beltran have priority."
The proposal has a date in March, which Nacho says is not possible because Marquez has not been training. Even a date in April would be tough, says Nacho, but at least that is possible given the circumstances.
"I think that is not enough time for Juan to fight, because he is usually prepared very well and he knows he can not go into a fight with little preparation, so I do not think that anything will happen on that date," he said.

Schaefer: Mosley deserves the fight with Malignaggi
Boxing article posted on January 16th, 2013 | Post Comment

Mosley Malignaggi Mosley vs. Malignaggi shane mosley paulie malignaggi By Dan Ambrose: 41-year-old Shane Mosley (46-8-1, 39 KO’s) will be getting what many boxing fans feel is an undeserved title shot against WBA World welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (32-4, 7 KO’s) on April 27th on Showtime.

While many boxing fans are turned off at the thought of Mosley getting the fight with Malignaggi, you can’t say the same for Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer. He likes the idea of them fight, and he thinks Mosley deserves the fight.

Schaefer said to espn “Paulie and I deserved the opportunity to fight for a world title again. He has accomplished so much and thrilled fight fans in so many fights, so I am happy to give him this opportunity.”

Mosley hasn’t won a fight in four years, and it’s so sad that Schaefer is willing to give Mosley another opportunity just because of how good he was in the past. It’s obvious the only reason he’s putting this fight together is because Mosley has a more recognizable name than the other guys Golden Boy could have found for Malignaggi.

This fight will be a headliner on the April 27th card, so this is as good as it gets and that’s pretty sad. If Mosley can beat Malignaggi, which is definitely possible given how terrible Malignaggi looked against his last opponent Pablo Cesar Cano, then Schaefer will have the chance to match Mosley up against one of the better fighters in the division.

I don’t know who at this point he can get because Mosley has already faced and been soundly beaten by the top fighters in boxing – Floyd Mayweather Jr, Manny Pacquiao and Saul Alvarez – in the last three years. Schaefer isn’t going to be able to get any of those guys to agree to fight Mosley again because it was way too one-sided when they beat him.

Mosley has excuses for why he looked so poor against Alvarez, Mayweather and Pacquiao, saying to espn “My legs were dead. I couldn’t move like I wanted to and I was throwing one shot at a time.”

That just sounds like age and ring wear showing their negative effects on Mosley. Too many hard fights combined with old age has really slowed him down.

Pacquiao at the worst point ever of his career
Boxing article posted on January 15th, 2013 | Post Comment

manny pacquiao By Babatis Banda: The once illustrious fighter is now carrying 5 heavy losses on his back. He is not just carrying 5 losses, but a number of knock-downs as well. His last two fights have been all losses, one in a close match with a second tier fighter, Bradley and the other, a devastating knock-out loss against Marquez.

In all honest, this should really have been the sixth loss as Pacquiao was outpointed in a close contest in their third meeting with Marquez. That is now water under the bridge.

At his height, Pacquiao was a fearsome one handed fighter who was praised for having learnt to use his other weaker hand. The difference was really his blazing speed and of cause, his main arsenal, the straight left.
For aggressive opponents and brawlers alike, their demise was almost always known, you eat a lot of those straight lefts, and you will be stopped or hurt. Bigger and slower opponents who occasionally had to come down in weight to fight Pacquiao became prey and helped boost Pacquiao’s fame. The press and the ‘love press factor’ bolstered Pacquiao into real big fame. Magarito and Oscar Dela hoya are perfect examples.

Meanwhile, the Mayweather/Pacquiao controversy was getting bigger and bigger and this helped catapult Pacquiao further as the nemesis of Floyd Mayweather junior, and possibly the only fighter that could have defeated the P4P boxer. This controversy was really big to the point that because Pacquiao was so loved, not so many and correct questions were being asked. For example, why would Pacquiao refuse to take the test? When people talk about Pacquiao having agreed to take the test, they deliberately leave out the fact that Pacquiao, because of mounting pressure, agreed but with some cut-off windows or dates….why? I am wondering what Pacquiao’s fans would say if in their 5th fight with Marquez, Marquez asked for cut off dates in the testing period if they choose to go the to go the RBT way.

Since Pacquiao was still at a position of some strength, many sympathized with him. Some argued…Floyd should just have fought him without demanding tests. Others, especially Pacquiao’s lovers have since coined Floyd a coward because of that challenge. Then came a bad spell in boxing, a number of prominent boxers were caught dirty. In other sports, Armstrong the famous cyclist has just admitted cheating after years of serious denial.
What seemed worse is that, since the Mayweather’s challenge, Pacquiao has been on a steep decline. He has not been knocking anybody out, excerpt what we hear from Roach in his training camp. It is like…..negate Pacquiao’s left and you win. Even when it lands, that left hand is no longer as deadly and I am convinced, Pacquiao would have a feat against Floyd, at whatever period in time.

The Knockout by Marquez was like the closing insult to a great controversy. It has seen Pacquiao relegated to the low-end of the status quo in boxing, signifying the worst point of Manny’s career. This was not just a knock-out, but will go down in history as one of the worst Knockouts ever in the history of the entire sport.

Jenna: Naazim, last time I had you on the show, you said that Manny Pacquiao could not beat Juan Manuel Marquez, and of course we all know how that last fight played out. What were your thoughts on the final result?

Naazim: I’m a fan of both of these guys, they are outstanding fighters, but I said this before and I’ll say it again, Marquez is a better fighter than Pacquiao. Pacquiao is a better athlete than Marquez and often athletes can get by a fighter with their athleticism, but what you will find is if you keep going in, eventually the better fighter is gonna pull forward and maybe get a result that will erase the other wins. You (Pacquiao) eeked out a win, you’ve never beaten Marquez that definitively. And I just felt it was a bad match up for Pacquiao. I never thought he was the fighter that Marquez was. I picked him in all four fights, I thought he won all four of ‘em. He proved emphatically that he won the fourth one, I thought he won the other three also.

Jenna: Marquez has had some credit taken away from the win by some people making accusations against him due to the strength and conditioning coach he works with. What do you make of that situation?

Naazim: My thing is if you have some proof that somebody is doing something wrong, by all means bring it to the forefront and let’s expose them and get them out of our sport, if you have some proof. If you don’t, we just can’t point fingers at guys and give guys cases if you don’t have any proof they’ve done anything wrong. We can’t question the integrity of Juan Manuel Marquez. He’s done nothing to have us think he is a guy who would cheat or carry himself in that mannerism or that he has ever needed it. What you see in Marquez is technique and you can’t fake technique. There is no drug that helps you have a better technique. As a matter of fact, as much as I like Marquez, he actually did something that we really get on young fighters about not doing. Marquez, the whole fight, looked for a shot. Now we chastise young fighters about that because he was looking for a particular shot. But like I tell people, Marquez looking for a shot and young fighters looking for a shot is like comparisons of me looking for a clue at a crime scene and Sherlock Holmes looking for a clue. There is that great a difference where a fighter of this magnitude, he can actually take his time, find a particular shot and literally destroy another great athlete. He’s a special guy and I think he’s one of the greats. He’s in my top 4 or 5 greatest fighter of all time.

Jenna: Do you think Pacquiao will ever be the same after a knockout like that?

Naazim: The human being that Pacquiao is, there is a chance that he could overcome it. I heard some things that there might be some signs of Alzheimer’s or things of that nature and I pray that’s not the case because he’s such a special guy. We hope to see him come back and move forward in whatever he wants to do. He’s a congressman; He’s an entrepreneur. I just hope the man is healthy, safe and can move forward with his family. In whatever he wants to do I wish him well.

Jenna: Naazim, the first big fight of 2013 takes place this weekend with Orlando Salido & Mikey Garcia squaring off against each other. What are your thoughts on this fight?

Naazim: Two tough guys. The biggest problem they have with that fight is that it being so early in the year is they could get over looked for fight of the year. Because it’s very possible that could be fight of the year because both of these guys can fight, both of these guys can punch and we haven’t seen quit in either one of them.

Jenna: Speaking of Mikey Garcia, some have questioned whether or not he has been brought along too slow. You as a trainer, do you think he was brought along too slow, or do you think this was the best way for him to grow as a fighter?

Naazim: As far as to judge whether or not it’s too slow will manifest itself in the product we see as he moves forward into the championship years. On the outside we can always look and say, “Hey we’re moving this kid too slow”, but the people moving the fighter can realize that mentally he’s not prepared to go to the next endeavor or the next stage yet. So they have better and more intimate information than we have so we really can’t judge from our perspective just looking from the outside. Yeah there’s a cookie cutter… we like to see guys in his young twenties…you usually see guys win titles in their young twenties and maybe make a couple of dollars in their thirties and then it’s time to sit down by the time they’re in their forties. That’s some people but Bernard Hopkins was the exception to the rule. He won titles in his thirties. He made money in his forties… We know he’s a rare cup but who could point and say, “Hey, they moved you along too slow” or they did this or they did that. We don’t know. Boxing is a very creative march and creativity is always going to be measured by the artist that’s at the helm and that’s all we can go by. Who’s to say you use too much coloring on your carrots. Who’s to say that your horizon is too far back on your particular canvas. We paint our own individual pictures. That’s what this sport is and we can’t get away from that.

Jenna: It was recently announced that Bernard Hopkins will be taking on Tavoris Cloud on March 9th. You think this is the right fight for Bernard?

Naazim: You know what, I keep waiting for Bernard to call me and say, “Naazim, I’m fighting so and so and so and so. What do you think?” And I can say, “Bernard, I don’t think you can beat that guy.” I was actually waiting for him to give me a call so I can say that. To help him… first of all to show him how real I would stay with him, but maybe I can get him out of this sport without him ever getting embarrassed. Most of these guys out here matched up with him I think Bernard can beat these guys. Now maybe I’m looking through rose colored glasses but I like Tavoris Cloud. I have always liked Tavoris Cloud. When he was a young kid coming up, as a matter of fact, I thought he was so hungry I didn’t think the older veterans should sit around and mess with him. I even teased Bernard one time I said, “Yo, this young kid is fighting for all the right reasons. He’s just trying to do better for his mother and his family.” I said, “That makes a man dangerous. You don’t need to be in front of that guy.” But like you said, the development is so important when you’re watching an athlete. As I watch Tavoris closer, and watch him in his development, I just don’t think he’s come to fruition where he can’t be outmaneuvered by Bernard Hopkins with all his wisdom.

Jenna: How much have you seen Bernard in the gym and how is he looking?

Naazim: Bernard is in the gym. Bernard’s usually in the gym consistently period. But he’s in the gym shaking off the early rust and everything and he’s on full boar go to get Tavoris Cloud. Like I said, I like Cloud. I think he’s credible but I really think what’s more impressive…I really feel like the Tavoris Cloud fight will really, I mean Bernard’s legacy has been solidified. I’ll put it to you like this, I give him more credit for fighting a Cloud than I give him for fighting Dawson.

Jenna: Naazim could you ever see a scenario in which Bernard overlooks a fighter based on his last performance, as the people that give Hopkins a shot in this fight, point to Cloud's fight with Campillo. Could Bernard look at that fight and at all underestimate Cloud?

Naazim: There is no way I would let him get into that position if I have anything to say about it and I know when I talk to him I’ll drive him about it, for the simple fact, when I start looking at tapes in preparation for this fight I’m not looking at Campillo. Yes, Campillo beat him. I mean we’re not blind. We saw the fight. He beat him. The fight I would have to watch is Tavoris Cloud fighting a Glen Johnson. Where he knows he’s facing another legend. Tavoris Cloud underestimated Campillo and he lost. I mean this is boxing. It happens to a lot of these young fighters. He underestimated Campillo. Campillo is a little skinny looking kid that a couple people underestimated and everybody who underestimated him, Beibut , and all he beat those guys. We ain’t gotta pretend like he didn’t, and we gotta be politically correct and tip toe around it and maybe this round or maybe that round, he beat them guys man. If guys underestimated him he beat those guys. Point blank. And I was actually in camp with Beibut when he was about to fight the kid. And Beibut, I think is a heckuva fighter and a heckuva talent but his whole mentality and his arrogance getting ready for that kid is the reason why he really lost. Because you can’t underestimate anybody in this sport, especially at the championship level. It’s just not possible if they made it there. And here’s why I say you can’t underestimate anyone at the championship level, lets say they made it there through politics, lets just say somebody put them there, I’m gonna get past you in the championships, that’s why you can’t underestimate anybody at the championship level.

won't put the best fighters in with each other?

Naazim: I was watching a show with my grandson the other day, and in the show they said “nature will find a way” We were watching Jurassic Park. (Laughs) But boxing will find a way, it will always find a way no matter what these promoters try and do, some kid will jump ship and go somewhere else to fight some kid in a fight that has to be made. Ok, we lost a big one with the Mayweather and Pacquiao fight, that's gone......SO? I never got to see Roberto Duran fight Aaron Pryor, that was my dream match. Boxing will continue, boxing will find new breath, and with all the young kids coming up, were OK. That's how I feel about boxing right now, we're OK.

Arum Rips Hopkins On Hbo, Malignaggi-mosley

By Keith Idec

NEW YORK — Bob Arum appreciates that HBO Sports executives saw the value in televising the “Boxing After Dark” tripleheader the premium-cable network will televise Saturday night from The Theater at Madison Square Garden.

Arum’s promotional company, Top Rank Inc., has stakes in two of the three fights and Arum believes at least one of his fighters, undefeated featherweight contender Mikey Garcia, can become a star if he overcomes Orlando Salido in their 12-round fight for Salido’s WBO title. Not surprisingly, working with HBO on this card didn’t prevent the 81-year-old, combustible promoter from vehemently voicing his displeasure with another fight the network will televise — Bernard Hopkins versus Tavoris Cloud.

“These people are not doing a good service to boxing,” Arum said. “I mean, what are they doing a Hopkins fight for? Why? Why? It makes no sense at all. None. A 48-year-old guy, who isn’t the most exciting guy, he’s going to f*** around, f*** around, f*** around in a boring fight. What did they buy it for, when they’ve got all these young guys who can become stars?”

The 48-year-old Hopkins owns a small piece of Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions, Top Rank’s rival. Showtime works almost exclusively with Golden Boy Promotions now that former Golden Boy lead counsel Stephen Espinoza is Showtime’s executive vice president of sports and event programming, but rival HBO will broadcast Hopkins-Cloud on March 9 from Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

“Showtime didn’t even want to take that fight,” Arum continued. “You’ve got be out of your mind to take a Bernard Hopkins fight with Cloud, out of your mind to buy it when there’s so many good young fighters that can make matches like these fighters. Other promoters have [similar] fights. How do you spend your money on a Bernard Hopkins fight and think you’re helping your network and you’re helping boxing? No. That is inexcusable.

“Now, if you have an Adrien Broner fight and you put him in with [an overmatched opponent] like this Gavin Rees, well, OK. You’re building him up and so forth. At least he’s a young guy, probably very talented and you could argue that. Bernard Hopkins and Cloud, there’s no earthly way, unless you’re insane, that you buy that fight. There is no rationale behind it. They can’t answer. They can’t answer. They can’t answer. There’s no rhyme or reason why the networks are doing what they’re doing — either of them.”

Arum seemed equally annoyed that Showtime will televise a Paulie Malignaggi-Shane Mosley welterweight title fight April 27 from Barclays Center.

“Mosley is terrible,” Arum said. “What are they thinking about? Why are they doing that fight? What does that fight prove? What does that fight do? And New Yorkers aren’t stupid. They ain’t buying that sh*t, Malignaggi in with an old man who hasn’t won a fight in four years.”

In addition to the Salido-Garcia fight, HBO’s broadcast Saturday night will feature 12-round championship bouts that’ll pit WBA middleweight title-holder Gennady Golovkin (24-0, 21 KOs) against Gabriel Rosado (21-5, 13 KOs) and WBO super featherweight title-holder Rocky Martinez (26-1-1, 16 KOs) against Juan Carlos Burgos (30-1, 20 KOs).

“My rationale is that this is what boxing should be,” Arum said, referencing the tripleheader. “This is what they should be presenting [on HBO and Showtime]. These are the kinds of cards they should be presenting. Competitive matches with guys that have a chance to become superstars. That’s right. They’re on the right track, and then they go off and put a Bernard Hopkins fight on. That’s craziness.”

Donaire Fights Rigondeaux On April 27 In Las Vegas

By Ronnie Nathanielsz
PhilBoxing.com
Thu, 17 Jan 2013

WBO/Ring Magazine and WBC Diamond Belt super bantamweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire will go after the WBA title of undefeated Guillermo Rigondeaux in Las Vegas on April 27.

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum told the Manila Standard that any talk about Donaire fighting on a possible Manny Pacquiao fight card planned for April was “nonsense.”

It was part of a proposal presented to sports patron, business tycoon and the owner of ABC 5 television Manny Pangilinan by Team Pacquiao member Eric Pineda for an ambitious card in Manila with Pacquiao facing Humberto Sotto in the main event and Donaire against an unnamed Mexican opponent in a co-main event.

Under the proposal WBO/WBA champion Brian Viloria would defend his title against a Mexican opponent on a card that would also include promising featherweight, southpaw Michael Farenas.

Both Arum and Pacquiao’s adviser Michael Koncz shot down the proposal with Arum telling us “that’s nonsense” since Donaire has a fight lined up in Las Vegas in April and “the Philippine TV rights are committed to ABS-CBN.”

Donaire is coming off a terrific year during which he moved up in weight and won the WBO super bantamweight title handily in a clash with Wilfredo Vazquez Jr and then successfully defended the title against IBF champion Jeffrey Mathebula of South Africa, won a handsome 9th round TKO over Japan’s WBC super champion Toshiaki Nishioka and then battered four division world champion Jorge “Travieso” Arce in three rounds one week after Pacquiao suffered a devastating 6th round knockout against Juan Manuel Marquez.

His impressive showing in 2012 won Donaire the accolade of “Fighter of the Year” from such prestigious organizations as ESPN, Ring TV, Boxingscene.com and Yahoo Sports.

Donaire and Rigondeaux had a verbal run-in during the week of the Donaire-Arce fight which is likely to help hype the fight against the Cuban who has only 11 fights with 9 knockouts and no defeats.

In his last title defense on September 15 last year, Rigondeaux won a unanimous twelve round decision over Roberto Marroquin who put up a solid effort although the former Cuban Olympic gold medalist dominated most of the fight despite being staggered in round three by a left hook which is regarded as the lethal weapon of Donaire.

Rigondeaux scored a knockdown in round five but was again staggered by Marroquin with a left hook in round nine before the WBA champion dropped Marroquin in the twelfth and final round.

Schaefer: Khan-Garcia 2 rematch will take place in November or December
Boxing article posted on January 18th, 2013 | Post Comment

Khan Garcia Khan vs. Garcia danny garcia amir khan By Scott Gilfoid: Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions is looking at November or December for the Amir Khan vs. Danny Garcia rematch. Khan has a fight date coming up on April 20th against a still to be determined opponent, while Garcia is facing 35-year-old Zab Judah next month on February 9th. It’s expected that Garcia will easily destroy the past his best Judah, and Golden Boy will likely feed Khan another beatable fighter for his April date.

However, Garcia may have to fight WBC interim light welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse in between February and November/December, and there’s no telling who will win that fight. Garcia is a good fighter, but he’s still a pretty limited guy with only one big punch to his arsenal.

If Garcia can’t stop Matthysse with his left hook, he’s going to be in for a world of hurt against Matthysse. I see that as a toss-up fight.

Schaefer said to Sky Sports News “The plan is to have Khan fight in April, and then Garcia in November or December.”

You might as well put a knockout loss next to Khan’s name for whichever month he ends up fighting Garcia because he’s going to lose that fight by another knockout. There are guys that Khan can beat, but Garcia and Breidis Prescott are not one of them. Those guys have Khan’s number and no matter how many times they fight him, I can see Khan getting knocked out each time.

I would add Marcos Maidana to the list but it would depend on which referee is working the fight. Khan should have been knocked out by Maidana in 2010, but the referee kept getting in the way of Maidana when he was trying to finish off a badly hurt Khan in the 10th round. I can see Maidana knocking Khan out in a rematch, as long as he’s not having to fight the referee and Khan at the same time.

Arum has big name for Tim Bradley’s next fight on March 16th
Boxing article posted on January 17th, 2013 | Post Comment

Bob Arum timothy bradley By Chris Williams: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum says he’s bagged a big named opponent for his fighter WBO welterweight champion Tim Bradley’s next fight on March 16th. Arum isn’t spilling the beans but he’s pretty pleased about who he’s netted for Bradley to fight.

Let’s hope Arum didn’t find someone too good because Bradley (29-0, 12 KO’s) looked pretty vulnerable in his last fight against Manny Pacquiao last year.

Arum said to RingTV “The matchmakers are working on a sensational opponent…Once it’s announced, people are going to say, ‘Wow, I can’t wait to see the fight.”

I’m hearing it’s going to be Andre Berto, and no, I’m not excited about that fight. I can wait for the fight and it’s not an earth shattering name. If Berto is the guy that Arum gets then that’s pretty sad because Berto was soundly beaten by Robert Guerrero last November and Berto took a terrible beating in that fight. That was just a really poor effort by Berto with him trying to use the Mayweather shoulder roll and getting tagged all night long by lead left hands from Guerrero. A shoulder roll against a southpaw?

I wonder who told Berto to do that? Berto has lost two out of his last three fights, and I’m really hoping that Arum doesn’t select him for Bradley, but that seems like a classic Arum move. Find a struggling guy and then put him in with one of his Top Rank stable fighters, and then hype the fight as if it’s going to be competitive.

There are not a lot of options for Bradley in the welterweight division. Some of the best guys fight for Golden Boy Promotions, such as Marcos Maidana, and that’s not going to happen. I’ll laugh if Arum trots out Jan Zaveck as his big named opponent for Bradley or Top Rank stable fighter Mike Jones

Kelly Pavlik announces retirement

NEW YORK -- Former middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik, saying that he is concerned about the long-term medical impact of continuing to fight and no longer motivated, told ESPN.com on Saturday that he is retiring from boxing.

"When you stay in the sport too long you have health problems. That's a big, big thing for me," Pavlik said. "I'm not talking about now. I'm talking about in the future. I'm talking about when I'm 55 or 60. What's gonna happen to me then? Why take any more chances, especially in that sport. It's a brutal sport and you never know what can happen.

"I won the world title, I defended my title, I was champ for three years and I made good money. Why take the chance of medical problems? That's a big part of it. I also don't think the drive is there anymore. I'm moving on to a new chapter in my life."

avlik had been scheduled to challenge super middleweight champion Andre Ward on Jan. 26 in Los Angeles in the main event of a major HBO card. However, the fight was postponed to March 2 and ultimately canceled when Ward injured his right shoulder and had surgery that will keep him out of action likely until the fall.

Pavlik said that the fight being canceled might be a blessing in disguise.

"I've been a pro for 13 years and doing this since I was 9," he said. "I go away for two or three months at a time (to train) and I'm tired of leaving my family. It comes to a point where you just don't want to do that anymore. I put my money away and then with the Ward fight being canceled, well, health and time with my family is more important at this stage, especially with no guaranteed big fight or date."

Cameron Dunkin, who managed Pavlik for his entire career along with Pavlik's father, Mike, said he was happy to see Pavlik retire with his health and money.

"I love Kelly. He did a lot of great things. He's a friend and a great guy to know," said Dunkin, who is in New York because his fighter, Miguel Angel "Mikey" Garcia challenges for a featherweight world title against Orlando Salido in Saturday night's HBO main event. "It was a great experience working with Kelly and I'm very happy for him making his decision.

"All the stuff he accomplished, when people said he couldn't, when they were down on him earlier in his career and said he would never do anything, I believed in him and knew what he could do. I am so proud of what he accomplished."

Pavlik (40-2, 34 KOs), who turns 31 in April, held the middleweight championship from 2007 -- when he got off the deck from a hard knockdown to eventually stop Jermain Taylor in dramatic fashion in the seventh round -- until 2010, when he lost a bloody decision to Sergio Martinez.

Known as "The Ghost," Pavlik, of Youngstown, Ohio, made three successful defenses, scoring knockouts against Gary Lockett, Marco Antonio Rubio and Miguel Espino. He also outpointed Taylor in a nontitle rematch at 164 pounds. Pavlik also lost a lopsided decision during his title reign to Bernard Hopkins in a nontitle fight at 170 pounds.

But Pavlik had become a star, made millions and gave the blue collar people of his hometown somebody to cheer for. He was invited to give a pregame speech to the Ohio State football team, did the charity and banquet circuit and was even called on by then-New York Senator Hillary Clinton to speak at a 2008 campaign rally during her presidential primary race against then-Illinois Senator Barack Obama.

But Pavlik also had his share of problems, which led to two long layoffs, one of 11 months and the other 10 months, between 2010 and 2012. Pavlik battled alcoholism and wound up in rehab twice, was arrested on a DUI charge, went through a messy contract dispute with career-long promoter Top Rank (which was worked out) and had a very public breakup with trainer Jack Loew, who had trained him since he was a kid, before hiring Robert Garcia.

Pavlik got back on track in 2012, fighting three times between March and July and winning in dominant fashion, although against lesser competition with knockouts of Aaron Jaco and Scott Sigmon followed by a decision win against Will Rosinsky in July.

"I had a pretty good career," Pavlik said. "I was 40-2 and I only lost to two of the best guys, Martinez and Hopkins. I'm content. It's not like I got knocked out. It's not like I got knocked out the way Manny Pacquiao got knocked out (in December by Juan Manuel Marquez).

"I'm fine physically. But I feel like why keep pushing the envelope? I made it this long and this far and I have had fights that were tough fights. I got dropped by Jermain Taylor, got dropped earlier in my career. But you constantly take punches and it all adds up. When you're done, you might have brain problems, you might be punchy, you might develop Parkinson's. Why push it? I don't need it and my heart's not in it anymore. So why take the chances? I've been very fortunate up to this point."

On his way to the title shot against Taylor, Pavlik earned it with a series of strong wins. He knocked out Fulgencio Zuniga and Bronco McKart and eventually got a chance to fight on HBO, scoring a sensational knockout of Jose Luis Zertuche. That led to a title eliminator against Edison Miranda. Pavlik was a significant underdog, but scored a seventh-round knockout in a blazing action fight to set up the Taylor fight.

Pavlik said he plans to open a gym -- not just for boxing -- in the Youngstown area. He also said he has been busy with a shopping plaza that he and a partner own.

"That's been going very well," he said. "We have 13 units and all of them are filled. When Andre Ward pulled out of our fight, maybe it was for the best. This is a new chapter for me. I know people will say this is because I have problems with (drinking), but that's not true. I'm fine. I have stopped caring about what they will say.

"I know this -- if it had been me who pulled out of the Ward fight, I would have been reamed. At this stage, I am just tired of the negativity and comments and a whole bunch of things. But I know people will think I'm drinking and it will be the first thing people go after."

Pavlik said retirement has been on his mind for awhile. He said he thought about it as far back as before defending the middleweight title against Espino in 2009 and then more seriously last year.

"I was contemplating it even before the last fight (in July)," Pavlik said. "Then they came up with the Andre Ward fight and I guess I got the motivation back. But I had been thinking about retiring and when the Ward fight fell out, that was icing on the cake for me."

Pavlik, married with two children, daughter Sydney, 6, and son Kelly Jr., who turns 4 in February, said his wife, Samantha hoped he would retire.

"For two or three years, she was telling me she wants me to be done. She said when I got to the age of 30, she wanted me to retire, so she backed it," Pavlik said. "Her biggest fear was long-term (physical) affects of boxing. My parents are behind it. They always said if I am not going into the ring 100 percent mentally ready, they didn't want me doing it, so they've been supportive of it."

But would Pavlik come back like so many fighters have? Just last week, 41-year-old Shane Mosley ended a retirement that lasted less than a year.

"As of right now, being a fighter and doing this since I was 9 and being at the level I've been at, I'm done," Pavlik said. "Is out of the question would I come back? I can't say that but then you can't rule it out. But as of now, it's legit."
