Kreayshawn Album: 'Somethin 'Bout Kreay' Deemed 'Fairly Empty'

Kreayshawn, "Somethin `Bout Kreay'" (Columbia Records)

It's unfortunate that the beats throughout Kreayshawn's debut album are brilliant, but her lyrics and stories are not.

"Somethin `Bout Kreay'" features top-notch production work from Free School, Diplo, Boys Noize and DJ Two Stacks – and these beats would be another rapper's dream. But Kreayshawn, the charismatic 22-year-old newcomer, doesn't use them well: While she's playful throughout the album, there is no depth to her rhymes.

"Gucci, Gucci" has a catchy hook, but the overall song about her disregard for designer brands is annoyingly repetitive. The uneven "Left Ey3," about a deceitful boyfriend, references TLC's Left Eye, who burned down her boyfriend's house. She also raps on the song: "Heard my man is cheating with another (girl) in my house, now I'm finna make a scene like I'm Amy Winehouse." REALLY? Try again.

Kreayshawn tries singing on "luV Haus," but the drowning track is uneventful. This album will leave you asking: Foxy Brown and Missy Elliott, when will your records be released?

I bought it for 7 bucks new. Not a bad deal for that price. I like about half the songs. The other half i don't like whatsoever. V-nasty has the worst verse on the album by far. She is so fuckin trashy and she cant rap for shit. Her verse is just screaming with double ups on the whole thing.

You don't give somebody a deal and expect them to only sell 3000 copies. You just don't. She's going to get dropped soon. She won't be able to repay the label. They drop people doing way bigger numbers. Not to mention this chicks "music" is fucking terrible.

all i'm saying is NO ONE (including Columbia) is shocked at those numbers. sure they're within their bounds to drop her, but the more plausible scenario would be to drop another single or two more and capitalize off the other aspects of her deal (merchandise, shows, etc.).

and when i said "she's not going anywhere anytime soon" i meant her as an artist, not her as a Columbia artist.
