Tributes Flood In For Joe Frazier; Floyd Mayweather Offers To Pay For The Champ's Fun

Tributes Flood In For Joe Frazier; Floyd Mayweather Offers To Pay For The Champ's Funeral Services

By James Slater - As fans know, boxing legend "Smokin'" Joe Frazier passed away a short time ago. The 67 year old lost his brave battle with liver cancer and is now at peace. Literally anybody who is anybody amongst the boxing fraternity has been paying tribute to the former heavyweight king.

Everyone, from Muhammad Ali to Lennox Lewis, from Bernard Hopkins to Larry Holmes, from Larry Merchant to Frank Warren has felt the need to say a few words about the fallen warrior.

Perhaps one of the most moving gestures has come from modern day superstar Floyd Mayweather, however. The sometimes controversial great has announced how he and Team Mayweather will pay for Joe's funeral services. As was the case when he quietly paid for Genaro Hernandez' funeral a short time back, Floyd has shown his caring, compassionate side.

Often looked as, for want of a better word, a jerk, Mayweather has again shown he is a great guy deep down. I'm sure 'Smoke' is up there smiling down on Floyd.

RIP Joe Frazier: 1944 to 2011.

Andre Berto vacated his IBF title today rather than facing his mandatory in Randell Bailey which means one thing - berto vs ortiz II is on for likely end of January. HBO told berto they wouldn't air berto vs bailey so there was no money in it for him.

I'd like to see Bailey vs Mike Jones for that vacant title.

Props to Berto for going after the man that took his 0 away. Could the winner of this fight be fighting Mayweather on May 5th, if Manny doesn't want the fight?

maybe, but only if berto wins. Even then I don't think berto is big enough for floyd.

I think the guy that would logically make more sense is Amir Khan.

the reasons are obvious:

1). He trains with Roach/Pacquiao.
2). He's promoted by Golden Boy.
3). He's popular already in the states.
4). He's a huge UK star.
5). He will bring butts in the seats whether it's in Vegas or in the UK.
6). He gets good ratings.
7). He's been calling out floyd for months if not longer.
8). It shouldn't be that risky of a fight for floyd.

Thats cool. However, someone should lace his boots on the history between Frazier and Merchant.

The way I see it Mayweather can fight Berto if he beats Ortiz, Kirkland, Canelo, Khan, and Martinez. I would buy any of those fights.

wow this is an absolute disgrace!

danrafaelespn Dan Rafael

Wretched WBC rankings came out 2 days after Kirkland KO'd Angulo yet Angulo is ranked #1 and Kirkland #15 at 154. #wbcisdisgusting

I'm fan of Canelo but come on, this is such a blatant way of protecting Canelo from Kirland.

On top of that, as it was noted on the HBO card, the winner of Angulo vs Kirkland was supposed to be next in line for Canelo, but now the WBC is saying it was a "semi final title eliminator" whatever the fuck that means.

5.Paul Williams (US)
6.Yudel Jhonson (Cuba) FECARBOX
7.Erislandy Lara (Cuba)
8.Alfonso Mosquera (Panama)
9.Ryan Rhodes (GB) BBB C

WBC is the same pieces of shit that have made Devon Alexander #1 contender to Mayweather without even fighting at welterweight yet.

Arum explains why he’s never been excited about matching Pacquiao with Mayweather

By Chris Williams: It’s tough to put together a fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. when Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum has never been too enthralled with matching his cash cow with Mayweather in the first place. Arum comes out and admits that his reluctance to put the fight together but saying it was because of some of the hurtful things Mayweather would say about Pacquiao rather than Arum worrying about his gravy train fighter Pacquiao getting dominated by the highly skilled Mayweather.

As you know once Pacquiao gets destroyed by Mayweather, Pacquiao’s earning potential will likely take a huge drop. This could be one of the reasons why Arum hasn’t been so eager to put Pacquiao in with Floyd.

Speaking with the telegraph.co.uk, Arum said “One of the reasons I never really was so keen on a Mayweather [vs. Pacquiao] fight, which I now truly believe is an easy fight for Pacquiao, is because how Manny is going to be tinted by some of the vile things that Mayweather comes out with…God knows what Mayweather is capable of saying.”

I don’t buy it. I think Arum is more afraid of not what Mayweather is going to say about Pacquiao but more so what he would likely do to the small Filipino. We saw Mayweather dominated Juan Manuel Marquez two years ago, winning every round of a 12 round fight. This is the same Marquez that Pacquiao went life and death with twice and won a controversial 12 round decision against in 2008. A lot of boxing fans think Marquez should have won both fights with Pacquiao, as do I. This weekend Pacquiao faces Marquez for the third time and it’s likely going to be another very, very tough fight for Pacquiao. I think Marquez might even win, which will pretty much put to finish the dream of a mega fight between Pacquiao and Mayweather.

I see Arum as being worried about not the insults Mayweather will be slinging at Arum’s fighter Pacquiao, but rather the beating he would give him. Mayweather is already insulting Pacquiao even without fighting. What difference would there be if Pacquiao were to fight him? He’d get just as much insulted as he is now, only Mayweather would obviously make Pacquiao look bad in their one on one meetings due to his ability to trash talk. The press conferences would be one-sided with Mayweather dominating a likely shy and ill at ease Pacquiao, who wouldn’t want to get in the gutter and start trash talking back. I think Mayweather would end up doing the brunt of the promoting for the fight with his charisma and ability to give excellent sound bites.

The biggest reason I think Arum doesn’t want to match Pacquiao up with Mayweather is because one Pacquiao gets schooled by Mayweather, it would likely leave Mayweather at the top and Pacquiao a distant second in future pay per view fights. Who would want to pay $55 to see Pacquiao fight after he gets wiped out by Mayweather and loses his WBO welterweight title? I know I wouldn’t. I don’t care if Pacquiao quickly picks up a paper title against one of the weak welterweight champions in the division, he’d still have been beaten by Mayweather and I wouldn’t see Pacquiao as a PPV star any longer. I barely see him as one now because of all the easy catchweight fights he’s been put in during the past couple of years.

^I've been saying that for a while now, that's why Pacquiao is fine without fighting Mayweather. He doesn't want to get humiliated outside and inside of the ring.... that's why he's fine hiding behind his promoter.

I don't get that logic though because if Pacquiao were to lose to floyd, his legacy is still cemented, he's still an all time great, he still holds records and he'll still be loved and popular.

If I were Pacquiao, and I watched the Floyd-Ortiz fight, there is NOTHING in that fight that would scare me to the point of where I wouldn't want to fight him. Actually the opposite is true - the moment I saw that Ortiz fight I would be calling EVERYONE on my team to make the fight happen ASAP because floyd looks beatable, imo. When Floyd was pot-shotting and boxing from the outside that's the version of floyd I wouldn't want to fight. This "newer" floyd, where he's staying inside the pocket and not pot-shotting from the outside, that's the version I would want immeidately. Again, the worst thing that happens to Pac is he gets out-boxed and loses a decision. Life goes on. Not bad for $50+ million dollars.

That logic is flawed.

Manny can and HAS lost before.

Floyd's whole aura and mystique revolves around being undefeated...to the point that he feels that a single loss would negate everything he's done in the sport. (Which honestly isn't true.)

This newer version of Floyd will KO Pacquiao or the fight will get stopped. It's not the same Floyd that won a controversial decision over Castillo.

Floyd is going to do Pacquiao like he did Gatti (RIP).

Inside the pocket means he's going to be hitting Pacquiao flush and laughing at him as he misses his little flurries....

And not only that, all the haters would love to see Floyd lose to Pacquiao. Floyd is not going to let that happen.
