Yeah. Its just too bad the 6 game winning streak comes after a 13 game losing streak, lol. If they went .500 in that span, then went on their tear they'd be competing for first right now. Oh well though, just gotta battle back. Everyone is playing better for Melvin, gotta keep it going.

Tough loss today, to lose it in the 13th on a hit batter sucks...Need to pick up a game tomorrow and get that momentum back, the games in Philly are gonna be tough...Weeks looked a little weak at 2nd today, but I still think you keep him there over Ellis, he needs to adjust to his position at this level still, he's the 2nd baseman of the foreseeable future, needs to get that playing time in. Bats need to pick up like always....

Off DL, Ellis says A's need to play Weeks

Veteran will be used as a utility infielder for the time being

NEW YORK -- Fresh off the disabled list, Mark Ellis walked into manager Bob Melvin's office on Wednesday to talk about a second-base situation that has seemingly been made complicated given rookie Jemile Weeks' sudden success.

Except there wasn't much to discuss. At least not in Ellis' opinion.

"He made it very easy on me," Melvin said. "You would, to an extent, expect that, but to the extent and the level he went, for me, was off the charts. The first thing I said to him was, 'OK, the second-base situation,' and he said, 'That's an easy one, you gotta play him.'"
"It's different, I'm not going to lie, but Jemile has played great," Ellis said. "He's played unbelievable. He's created a spark for this team, and I think it's obvious. I still see myself playing second base every day, so we'll see what happens there, but he's played too good to be out of the lineup."
A's Ellis moving to Giants?

Oakland Athletics second baseman Mark Ellis(notes), who has been with the team longer than any other current member of the roster, is now a utility player. That is thanks to the hot bat of rookie Jemile Weeks(notes), who took over the spot while Ellis was out with a slight hamstring strain.

In 53 at-bats, the 24-year-old Weeks is hitting .321 with four stolen bases and 10 runs scored. He was the A's top draft pick in 2008.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that "there is widespread belief" that the 34-year-old Ellis will be dealt across the Bay to the San Francisco Giants.

"I think there's a very good chance," one industry insider told the paper.

The A's are currently in last place in the American League West, 5 ½ games behind the Texas Rangers.
None of the reports say what the Giants would be giving up for Ellis though.

The Orioles are another possible fit for Mark Ellis of the A’s. The Giants, one team with some interest in Ellis, have been considering other possible infielders, according to Olney.

Im sure we wouldnt give up too much for Ellis, seeing as he isnt worth too much
Yeah. I dont see much coming from that rumor. The Giants dont have anything we need. We need a 1st baseman with a bat, or a 3rd baseman with a bat, and for Ellis in his declining years isnt going to bring that...I like the idea of keeping him on as a utility guy for the rest of his contract, then letting him go. Plus Sabean and Beane have never done any trade business together.

"The Giants are not pursuing" A's second baseman Mark Ellis, reports Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle. (Twitter links). The Giants at least checked in on Ellis but have cooled their pursuit for a variety of reasons, including Ellis' salary, his poor performance this season, Oakland's trade demands and the presence of Bill Hall, Emmanuel Burriss and Freddy Sanchez (who could still return from the DL) on the roster.

Rival scouts have been watching Brian Fuentes and Craig Breslow, reports Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle. Of the two southpaws, the Athletics would be more apt to move Fuentes since he has around $7.6MM remaining on his contract through 2012, whereas Breslow still has two more arbitration years left. Fuentes also stirred up controversy earlier this season when he criticized then-manager Bob Geren. These two pitchers and Jerry Blevins made MLBTR's Tim Dierkes' recent list of potentially-available left-handers.

Chris Carter is coming up while Willingham is on the DL with his strained achillies...Hopefully he hits like he did the last part of his last stint where he hit .340 something, and not the first part where he went 0-33, lol. I hope he does well so they keep him at first, and keep Barton in AAA. Having Weeks, and Carter up and staying up sooner than later is better.

A's deal Ellis to Rockies for righty Billings

OAKLAND -- The class with which Mark Ellis has exuded during 10 years with the A's was reciprocated by the organization in a bittersweet way on Thursday, when the club traded him to the Rockies in an effort to afford him the opportunity at an everyday job at second base.

Cash considerations were also sent to the Rockies, who will take on $1 million of Ellis' remaining salary this year. In return, the A's received right-hander Bruce Billings and a player to be named.

The 34-year-old Ellis, Oakland's longest-tenured player, was recently relegated to a utility role following a 15-day stint on the disabled list with a hamstring strain -- a time during which rookie Jemile Weeks made his mark in the A's infield. All the while, Ellis couldn't imagine putting on another uniform amidst trade talks, but on Thursday admitted he knew a deal was possible.
Still, an emotional Ellis was hit hard by the news.

"It's a tough day for me, being here as long as I have," he said. "It's a great organization I've been proud to be a part of for 10 years. It's going to be tough, but it's my time to move on and with another organization."

Ellis is expected to be in a Rockies uniform for Friday night's opener of a three-game set with the Royals, batting second and playing second base for a Colorado club that, much like the A's, is trying to find offensive consistency. He was hitting just .217 with 11 doubles, one home run and 16 RBIs for the A's this season before losing the starting job to Weeks.

"Obviously kind of mixed emotions on this, given what Mark has meant to the franchise over the years, not just on the field but off the field," A's general manager Billy Beane said. "He's probably been as good of a representative as we've had since I've been here.

"But in the same sense, I'm also happy Mark's going to be going to a place that he's got a chance to play every day, a place that's close to his family in Arizona, and to a team that has a chance to win. At the end of the day, I think this is a great situation for Mark."

Billings, 25, began the season at Triple-A Colorado Springs and was promoted to the Rockies on May 25. He made his big league debut two days later and was optioned back to Triple-A the next day. He was 6-2 with a 4.47 ERA at Colorado Springs.
Its good Ellis is going to get to play everyday, its sad he has to go, he's been a good player and a good guy, but its time to move on, Weeks is the future at 2nd. Wish we got a bat or something useful in return though.

I guess the giants missed out on ellis, the rumor was that they were pursuing him for his solid defense more than anything. Good for him and the A's they get a young arm, while he gets to compete as the rockies aren't bad of a team.
Yeah its not bad for anyone. Would have liked to get a bat out of it, especially for trading Ellis and paying 2/3 of his remaining salary.

I'd say bro, you guys are in desperate need of a solid POP in that lineup, yea apparently he's due a good ol 6 mill this season. Miss those good ol' days now when they had mark mulder, tim hudson, and zito, that was a similar 3 headed monster the giants have right now in lincecum, cain, and sanchez.

Anderson undergoes Tommy John surgery

OAKLAND -- Following a disappointing first half, not even the All-Star break could pass smoothly for the A's, who on Thursday announced that left-hander Brett Anderson underwent season-ending Tommy John surgery.

The reconstructive elbow procedure, deemed a success, was orchestrated by Dr. James Andrews in Pensacola, Fla., in the morning.

Upon Anderson's third trip to the disabled list -- each time the result of elbow discomfort -- in June, the A's pitcher believed Tommy John surgery was imminent. Andrews, though, opted to give him a platelet-rich plasma injection, as he had last year, but there was not enough improvement to avoid an operation.

Anderson, 23, is facing a recovery time of at least a year, though up to two years is not uncommon, meaning a return to the mound might not come until 2013. That would mark the final year of a four-year, $12.5 million deal -- which includes options for 2014 and 2015 -- he signed at the start of last season. He was 3-6 with a 4.00 ERA upon the onset of his injury and is 21-23 with a 3.66 ERA in his career.

Fellow A's hurler Joey Devine needed nearly two full years to return to old form following Tommy John, while lefty Josh Outman was out for almost the same amount of time. Oakland pitchers Andrew Bailey and Grant Balfour have also undergone the operation.

Anderson is the second A's starter to endure season-ending surgery. Left-hander Dallas Braden had a torn capsule in his left shoulder repaired in May. Moreover, the injury bug circulating around the club's staff has hit Brandon McCarthy and Tyson Ross, the latter who has yet to return.

However, a positive has been found in Oakland's pitching depth. Guillermo Moscoso has been a pleasant surprise for the A's, going 3-4 with a 2.16 ERA in 10 games, eight of them starts. The A's also have options in Josh Outman and Graham Godfrey.

Oakland, which entered the break 12 games behind division-leading Texas and 14 below the .500 mark as a result of not only the aforementioned injuries but more so an underachieving offense, is set to begin the second half of the season on Friday against the visiting Angels.

Selig says he wont hurry on A's move decision.

"With the A's future in Oakland hanging in the balance, Commissioner Bud Selig said Tuesday that he's willing to wait as long as it takes to get an informed decision.

Selig commissioned a blue-ribbon panel to investigate a proposed move to San Jose. That was 28 months ago -- with no end in sight -- as the committee sorts through the Giants' claims to territorial rights in the South Bay.

"It's a very complex situation," Selig said. "(The committee has) spent a lot of time -- an enormous amount of time.

"And as I've told both clubs: This is another situation where it's better to get it done right than to get it done any faster."

Speaking at the annual Baseball Writers Association of America luncheon a few hours before the All-Star Game, the commissioner acknowledged the long wait and growing impatience with his blue-ribbon committee. "

•The Athletics have received calls on Andrew Bailey, though their current position is that they would need to be overwhelmed by an offer, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

I could care less at this point about keeping one solitary pitcher against having a bat. If there is a slugger that can be had for one of our pitchers, Im for it. Ideally it would would be dope to keep the whole lot, but losing everygame 1-0 or 2-1 is getting hella old.
