I’m not saying he did a bad job. And maybe he was the best choice for the oscar (can’t say it was an impressive year). But I am just saying I was not impressed. Here's some reasons why:

I didn’t feel any connection between the characters, the critique applies across the cast, so their experiences in the movie fell flat. Example: When the HBO documentary airs I didn’t feel like the mother was torn down, I didn’t feel Dickey’s embarrassment/shame, I didn’t feel sorry for his boy, I didn’t feel for Mickey having his idol torn down on national TV. This should have been a dramatic anchor and instead I feel just “meh”.

Stealing the show isn’t that big of an accomplishment in this situation. Given what I said above and that he was basically the main character. Him an Marky Mark anyway. And is that really any competition for Bale? Marky Mark? If he didn’t steal the show there’d have been something REALLY wrong.

I wasn’t sold on his delusional comeback, I wasn’t sold on his despair, I wasn’t sold on his drug addiction, I wasn’t sold on his family connections and disconnections, I wasn’t sold on his influence over his brother (positive and negative), etc.

I’m sure many would have done worse, but I’ve got to believe someone could have done better (maybe even Bale himself).

I am open to the idea that his performance had these flaws due to circumstances out of his control as an actor, such as, director, script, supporting cast, editing. But I also can’t say those were the cause, so I have to fault him for it.

What’s so great about actors pulling off accents? I hear people do great impressions all the time.

Really I think people jock this role because of his physical transformation like The Machinist.

Wouldn't that be a failure of the director and not the actors?

Hmm, could have swore there was another Oscar winner in the cast...

But I didn't mean it in the way that he out-performed everyone else in the movie, I'm talking about his performance was so good that's all people were talking about.

Really I think people jock this role because of his physical transformation like The Machinist.
that was the case for the machinist but for this film the first thing people were saying wasn't "did you see how skinny he was?" it was "wow what a great performance!" he convinced the audiences of being a crack head, of being Dickie and he put on a hell of a show and it was completely different than anything else Bale had done before in his career.

And yes, nailing specific accents is quite difficult, especially for a foreign actor. If it wasn't that a big deal Harrison Ford wouldn't have made a fool of himself in K-19 playing a Soviet Russian with a half american accent and half retarded russian accent, or Kevin Costner in 'Prince of Thieves' who attempted and failed terribly to sound British and countless others. It's a very tricky thing to do consistently and convincingly.

I respect your opinion though, I just disagree with it this time.

I also have a feeling if Bale didn't win an Oscar and this movie went completely under the radar and didn't get much press, you would be raving about his performance.

Yup, and he did a much better job than her. My criticism of her performance is greater than Bale, but you didn’t bring up Melissa Leo until now.

But I didn't mean it in the way that he out-performed everyone else in the movie, I'm talking about his performance was so good that's all people were talking about.
The movie was so unremarkable I guess they need to talk about something. Plus, like I said, it wasn’t an outstanding year.

I wasn’t.

I don’t think so.

Yup, I know. I’m not trying to be argumentative, just defend/explain my position.

Nah I’m not that type of movie viewer or consumer of any type of art for that matter. I also have a feeling that you were going to like this movie if it were even half way close to being decent (or any other boxing movie for that matter).

I’m not convinced that a Boston accent is that hard for a Brit. Nor am I convinced that an accent is that hard with proper commitment and speech/voice coaching.

not exactly related other than it is accent/inpersonation

All around pretty cheesy and bad but Christopher Walken flipping out when he saw his finger got cut off was pretty funny I guess.

4/10

Kind of OT but I also just finished the last season of Deadwood finally, good show but that was a pretty weak way to end a season, sucks they got cancelled and had to go out like that.

I'd give that series as a whole 7.5/10

The plot was really bad from the start so this film relied entirely on comedic performance. The only funny parts came from John C. Reilly, which sucks because I don't think he's very funny. However, in this movie, he made me laugh with just about everything he said. Overall not a very good movie, though. [4.3/10]

Due Date

Pretty much the same as above with even less humor. Didn't like this one. [3/10]

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

I liked what they did with this movie, but I think it was just a little too kiddish for my taste. If I were like 16 I probably would have liked this movie much more. [6.0/10]

Limitless

There were about a half dozen times through this movie where I said to myself "stupid...", but I think that had more to do with how drawn in I was and things not going the way I wanted. I thought this movie was pretty fucking good. But I definitely would have done a few things differently. Robert Deniro was pretty good in this too. [7.7/10]

The Lincoln Lawyer

I liked this movie but it could have been better. I think Ryan Phillippe was not convincing in his role. With a more suitable actor for that part, I think the overall feel would have been completely different. He was just unable to sell it. Enjoyable movie. [6.7/10]

The Town

Another good movie for Affleck as a director. Seemed maybe a bit long. Got good performances out of everyone. He did a good acting job himself. I was a bit disappointed with the action sequences. Car chases and shoot outs were from strange angles and just didn’t give me that edge of the seat feeling. In contrast I felt the moments leading up to the action were well done and suspenseful. Ending wasn’t quite as predictable as I expected, which was nice. Over all glad I watched and would recommend. 3 out of 5

No tiddies, breh.

Due Date

Poor version of Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. I’ve never found Robert Downy funny, but I’ve always liked Galifinakis. Both were unfunny in this movie. Everything “funny” was in the trailers for the film.

The Chaser (2008, South Korean)

This movie is a dark thriller about a pimp who loses a couple of his ho's, and he tries to find out why.

I give this film a very solid 7.0 - 7.5, somewhere in that range. It has some fairly brutal scenes. Acting is good, some of the stuff the pimp says and a couple other characters gave me a chuckle. I strongly recommend this movie.

There is talk Hollywood is going to remake this movie.

Before The Devil Knows Your Dead
Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Ethan Hawke are brothers who need money so they decide to commit a victimless crime. Things go wrong. Some things go right however, like Marisa Tomei being naked for most of her scenes. This is one of those movies that is shown out of sequence but it doubles back and shows you (sometimes extended)scenes from another point of view. I thought it was done really well. Great acting, great story. 8.5/10

7/10 in terms of a highschool grading system

in light of coldblooded's rating system i cannot say if there were tiddies in this or not since i watched it on television..but there must have been because there was some cool girls on it..meagen fox got in the pool all sexy like

I didn’t find anything special here. I didn’t see any impression of the director (maybe that’s a good thing, but there wasn’t anything for it to stand out and give extra points either). Acting was nothing special. Jesse Eisenberg has been playing the same character the same way since the first move I saw him in. The script was probably the highlight taking something so boring and turning it into something less boring. It was hard enough to finish this I surely would never need to watch it again.

Yeah I'm gonna check out that Chaser movie too. Seems like hollywood is running out of old IP's to remake so they're going after recent foreign films. Slightly better trend but still weak they do anything to avoid starting a new original IP.
