Allan Green moves up to light heavyweight division
By Dan Ambrose: Following two consecutive humiliating losses in the Super Six tournament, the struggling super middleweight contender Allan Green (29-3, 20 KO’s) will be now fighting at light heavyweight to try and get a change of luck.
Green, 31, has been having problems getting down to the 168 pound super middleweight limit. Presumably, by moving up in weight to light heavyweight, Green will be able to find his lost form. However, Green’s problems make go deeper than just his problems making weight.
Green doesn’t throw enough punches and he was hurt by some shots in his last fight by 42-year-old Glen Johnson. Green’s problems may be more to do with not throwing enough punches and having a chin that is a little too shaky for him to succeed at the highest level.
In an interview at boxingtalk.com, Green said “Anybody with eyes could see. It’s hard when you’re in camp and you’re at 174 or 173 and everybody is telling you that you should move up because you’re not the same fighter when you take off the extra weight. I don’t have a lot of fat to cut in the first place. I am very good fighter at 168, but I’ll be much better at 175 because I’ll be stronger and faster.”
By moving up in weight, Green may continue to have problems because there are some tough fighters at light heavyweight like Tavoris Cloud and Beibut Shumenov that Green will have problems with. Green would also likely have problems with the speedy Jean Pascal and Chad Dawson. Those guys are beatable but it’s doubtful that Green would have enough talent to beat them.

Pacquiao’s WBC title now vacant, Saul Alvarez next in line
By Dan Ambrose: The WBC junior middleweight title is now vacant after the Manny Pacquiao, the WBC champion after defeating Antonio Margarito for the vacant strap in November, opted not to defend the belt.
The next in line to fight for the belt will be number #1 WBC ranked contender Saul Alvarez (35-0-1, 26 KO’s), and his opponent for the belt will be selected by the World Boxing Council board, according to fightnews.
It’s unclear whether Alvarez will decide to fight for the title once the WBC selects another contender to face Alvarez. You would have to figure that Alvarez’s promoters won’t let him fight number #2 contender Alfredo Angulo or #5 contender Vanes Martirosyan if they end up getting selected by the WBC, because those are very tough match-ups for the still raw 20-year-old Alvarez and his promoters from Golden Boy Promotions might like the idea of putting Alvarez in with someone that would actually have a good chance of beating him like Angulo and Martirosyan.
Alvarez is facing EBU welterweight champion Matthew Hatton on March 5th at the Honda Center, in Anaheim, California. Hatton, a weak puncher, is the perfect opponent for Alvarez to fight. Recently, Gold Boy has been matching Alvarez against 39-year-old Lovemore N’dou and 39-year-old Carlos Baldomir.
You have to figure that if Alvarez beats Hatton, he will continue to be matched softly for the foreseeable future to ensure that he doesn’t take too much punishment and end up losing to someone better than him.

Khan says 9000 tickets sold on first day for McCloskey bout at M.E.N Arena
By Sean McDaniel: Amir Khan (24-1, 17 KO’s) is quite pleased with the ticket sales for his upcoming bout with number #5 ranked WBA light welterweight contender Paul McCloskey (22-0, 12 KO’s) for their bout on April 16th a the M.E.N Arena, in Manchester, England. In the first day that tickets were put on sale for this fight, 9000 tickets were quickly scooped up by boxing fans eager to see this match-up.
These are huge numbers given that the M.E.N Arena seats 23,000 and there’s over two months to go before the April 16th fight between Khan and McCloskey.
Khan, speaking on his twitter account, said “The venue I’m fighting have just sold 9000 tickets on the first day. The most they ever sold at the M.E.N. Selling quick, guys. Tickets are selling fast. Please ensure you book your tickets early to avoid disappointment. Buy now.”
This is a fight that’s kind of difficult to understand by people from America, because this appears to be a total mismatch. McCloskey hasn’t faced anyone in the top tier before and yet boxing fans in the UK are eager to see this fight. If this fight were to take place in the United States, and McCloskey was merely an obscure belt holder among the various little known belts that are floating around, they would literally have to give tickets away to get people to want to see this fight. Yet Khan is able to sell a ton of tickets against a fighter that doesn’t have much popularity. It shows you how popular Khan is right now. Hopefully, he stays that way in the future when he finally faces Timothy Bradley.

Pacquiao Could Target Berto's Title in The Near Future

Pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao, in a letter to World Boxing Council president Don Jose Sulaiman, has said he looks forward to regaining the WBC welterweight title or even a WBC belt at a lighter weight. The WBC title is currently held by unbeaten Andre Berto at 147-pounds. Pacquiao has the WBO's version around his waist.
The letter was emailed by Pacquiao’s adviser Michael Koncz prior to their departure for the United States on Wednesday night to begin a promotional tour to hype the fight against Shane Mosley set for May 7.
Koncz told the WBC president “We look forward to the opportunity in the future to proudly represent the World Boxing Council as one of its World Champions in a weight division of 147 lbs or less.”
In the letter Pacquiao told Sulaiman “it is with a heavy heart that we must notify the WBC of our decision to vacate the WBC Super Welterweight Championship belt as we learned from the Margarito bout, fighting at 154 lbs is a very dangerous proposition for Manny Pacquiao as on fight night we were at a 15lb weight disadvantage. I am sure you will understand that the health and safety of the fighter must come first.”
Pacquiao said “we believe that other young boxers in this division should have the opportunity to obtain greatness and their boxing careers flourish by proudly competing for and wearing the WBC Super Welterweight Championship.”
For his part Koncz said “we are both well aware Manny Pacquiao has with great pride and honor held a number of World Championship belts of the World Boxing Council. There is and always will be a special place in our hearts for the way WBC and you personally treated us and the great honors you have bestowed upon Mr. Pacquiao.”
Pacquiao won four WBC world titles beginning with the flyweight championship when he won by an 8th round knockout over Thai hero Chatchai Sasakul on December 4, 1998. He also won the WBC super featherweight title with a split decision victory over Juan Manuel Marquez on March 15, 2008, the WBC lightweight title with a 9th round TKO of David Diaz on June 28, 2008, the vacabt WBC light middleweight title with a 12th round unanimous decision over Antonio Margarito on November 13, 2010 and the first WBC Diamond Belt with a 12th round TKO over Miguel Cotto on November 14, 2009.
He also won the WBC International super bantamweight and super featherweight titles in his career

Yuriorkis Gamboa-Chris John is Still The Plan, Says Arum

WBA featherweight "Super Champion in recess," Chris John, will try to remain the sport's longest-reigning belt-holder when he takes on countryman, Daud Yordan on April 17, at the Jakarta Trade Expo, in Jakarta, Indonesia. According to Top Rank CEO, Bob Arum, there is still a plan to have WBA/IBF featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa challenge John (44-0-2, 22 knockouts) at the end of the year. The WBA, during last year's annual convention, ordered Gamboa and John to fight each other.
In December, Sampson Lewkowicz, the adviser to John and Yordan, collaborated with Arum, on a potential fall, 2011 clash between John and Gamboa (19-0, 15 KOs). Lewkowicz and Arum, who handles the 29-year-old Gamboa (pictured above, at right), agreed on the notion that each of the fighters take an interim bout before meeting in a more lucrative fight in the fall. Gamboa will face Jorge Solis (40-2-2, 29 KOs) on March 26.
"Sampson came to see me and he said, 'Look, the WBA organization is mandating that they fight right away. But I would prefer to give John another fight, because it's a very lucrative fight to make between him and Gamboa to Indonesia,'" said Arum.
"And I said, 'Sampson, that's fine with me. I'll give Gamboa a fight, which is the March 26 fight, and then, after those fights, let's do the big fight.' And he said, 'fine,' and we shook on it, and that's that," said Arum. "That's what happened, and that's what we intend to do. So Gamboa's next fight would be against Chris John if they both win their prior fights, and that would be in the fall."

well there are four major governing bodies in boxing, each one has a belt.
typically you get a belt by beating a champ, however often times if there is no champ there is a vacant title and two fighters can fight for it determined by that sanctioning body.
For example, Cotto vs Quintana was for the vacant WBA belt. So was Cotto vs Jennings. Pacquiao vs Margarito was for the vacant WBC super welterweight belt.
Or Mayorga won the vacant WBC light middleweight title by beating Michele Piccirillo, who Oscar de la hoya beat who Floyd mayweather beat then Floyd immediately after vacated the title.
Ultimately though the real champ is the person who beat "the man" at that division or unifies the belts (or gets the ring belt). Like Andre Berto has some paper belt he won at welterweight but no one considers him "the champ" in the division.
For example Pacquiao & Floyd are both the best at welterewight without question, but both won meaningless belts at 154 that neither had any intention of defending. Kinda like hoy Roy Jones won a belt at Heavyweight beating John Ruiz but we all know the real champion at the time was Lennox Lewis, who Jones obviously had no intention of fighting. Top Rank's CEO, Bob Arum, advised BoxingScene.com that a featherweight unification between WBA/IBF champion Yuriorkis Gamboa (19-0, 15KOs), and WBO champion Juan Manuel Lopez (30-0, 27KOs), will only happen when the public demand has reached a certain level. Arum tells BoxingScene that he won't allow Lopez-Gamboa to end up like the recent 140-pound unification between unbeatens Devon Alexander and Timothy Bradley.
Arum doesn't believe there was any real build-up for the fight, or any real public demand, and points to the low ratings on HBO, and the low attendance at the Pontiac Silverdome in Michigan, as the end result of doing the fight too soon. Alexander-Bradley needed more time to cook and more time to build the names of both fighters, says Arum.
The immediate demand for Alexander-Bradley, says Arum, came from the hardcore fans and the internet writers, which doesn't usually translate into a fight that generates money or captures the interest of the general sports fan. He believes the promoters, and HBO, were pressured into doing the fight too soon.
Lopez returns on April 16 against Orlando Salido in Puerto Rico. Gamboa defends against Jorge Solis on March 26 in Atlantic City.
"[Lopez-Gamboa] will happen when the fans are really demanding the fight. I'm not going to be pushed by a few people, who follow boxing closely and want the fight to happen. That doesn't mean the fight should happen," Arum told BoxingScene.com.
"I want, when the fight happens, for the demand to be there so I know that I can sell out an arena, and not the travesty that just happened with Alexander and Bradley. That was travesty to do that fight with no real build-up, so there was no real demand from the sports fan. That's not going to happen to me. I go by what the demand is for a particular fight, and the demand is not there for a fight between Lopez and Gamboa."
"When the demand reaches a boiling point, where everybody is on board and excited like the New York Times and the news...everybody and not just the website people because that doesn't drive the needle. That was the fault of Alexander and Bradley. It hadn't even reached the consciousness of the public."

Hopkins-Pascal II to compete with Froch-Johnson fight on 5/21
By Dan Ambrose: With the WBC light heavyweight title fight between champion Jean Pascal going up against Bernard Hopkins on HBO on May 21st, this means that the fight will be coming directly with Showtime’s Super Six tournament semi-final bout between WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch and Glen Johnson, which just happens to be taking place on the same night but on a different cable company.
This isn’t a good thing for boxing or the fans of the sport, because it means they’re going to have to decide on one of two choices, unless they have Tivo. With the previous Hopkins-Pascal I fight doing really good ratings on Showtime, you would have to assume that the Hopkins vs. Pascal II rematch will pull in more eyeballs than the Froch vs. Johnson fight.
Although that fight might be huge in the UK, it’s not going to likely be able to outdraw the Hopkins-Pascal rematch. It’s too bad this fight is taking place on the same night because both of them are great fights, and it will be a pity that both will be weakened because of these two fights running against each other.
Hopkins was dropped twice by Pascal in December, and then had to rally furiously just to pull off a 12 round draw. Hopkins complained bitterly about the outcome, like he sometimes does when he doesn’t get the “W”, and the WBC decided to give Hopkins the opportunity to try and get a win on the second time out. If Hopkins can’t do it this time, then he’ll be out of luck. I can’t see the WBC giving the 46-year-old Hopkins chance after chance without end. He’s going to have to glue his feet to the canvas and hope that Pascal doesn’t have him flying around the ring again like last time.

This isn’t a good thing for boxing or the fans of the sport, because it means they’re going to have to decide on one of two choices, unless they have Tivo. Cintron returns to action in May, wants to fight for vacant WBC title
By Jim Dower: Former IBF welterweight champion Kermit Cintron (32-3-1, 28 KO’s) reportedly will be returning to the ring in May, and hopes to fight for the vacant World Boxing Council junior middleweight title that was recently vacated by Manny Pacquiao. One of the contenders for the vacant WBC title will tentatively be #1 ranked WBC contender Saul Alvarez. The WBC board will vote for the other challenger. However, Cintron, who’s ranked only #9 by the WBC, is likely not going to be the one that gets the opportunity.
Cintron hasn’t helped himself by being inactive since diving out of the ring in the 4th round last year in May 2010 against Paul Williams. Cintron, 31, hurt his shoulder during the fall and the fight was subsequently ruled a 4th round technical decision win for Williams rather than a no-contest. Whatever the case, it wasn’t a great performance from Cintron and he needs to start looking good again.
Cintron looked good in beating Alfredo Angulo by a 12 round decision in 2009, and then followed that win up with a 5th round stoppage of Juliano Ramos in October 2009. But then the Williams fight came and that was a bad fight for Cintron. Ideally, he should have got back in the ring and fought at least twice since then instead of sitting out for such a long time. Cintron dodged a bullet in February 2009, when he was able to talk his way out of a knockout loss to Sergio Martinez after getting dropped by a left hand, saying he was knocked down by a head butt.
As it turns out, Cintron wasn’t hit with the head of Martinez and was actually dropped by a left. Cintron should have lost that fight first by a knockout and second at least by a decision. He got lucky to get the draw but it didn’t win Cintron many fans.
I would favor Alvarez over Cintron if they were to get matched up. Cintron does have the ability to hit and run, as he showed in the Angulo fight, but I don’t think he would do well against Alvarez. He hits harder than Angulo and I can see him getting the better of Cintron in their exchanges. Cintron needs to move down in weight to welterweight and start trying to put pressure on WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto, because that’s someone I think he could beat.
